25.01.2022 Introducing a contemporary lighting collection designed by renowned British industrial product designer Sir Kenneth Grange in his 90th year, the Type 80 is an all-new design that's distinguished by a striking, graphic profile. Every detail has been carefully considered and precision engineered to deliver streamlined style, ease of use and consistency across the collection. Type 80s design is enhanced by an attractive halo light-escape feature in the shade. This adds an ext...ra dimension in low light environments - a refinement characteristic of Sir Kenneths designs for the brand. The Anglepoise Type 80 collection includes lights for table, wall and ceiling. Every detail has been carefully considered with as much finesse as possible. Joints are precision engineered to new exacting standards. Elegant style combined with ease of use distinguishes this collection. Both table and wall versions feature sprung joint mechanisms, cables that are discreetly routed through the arms and an accessible on-shade on/off switch. The wall sconce and ceiling rose are visually aligned and easy to install. The collection comes in four sophisticated, ultra-matte colour choices - Rose Pink, Pistachio, Grey Mist and Matte Black. The entire Anglepoise collection - including the new Type 80 are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

25.01.2022 The latest product to emerge from Conde Houses ongoing collaboration with internationally acclaimed designer Naoto Fukasawa, KOTAN Stool (Kitchen and Bar heights) is an optically light, literally light, yet materially robust stool that is built to last. Launched in 2020, KOTAN utilises Japanese ash and leather or fabric upholstery to create a pared-down yet friendly form that fits perfectly into both residential and contract contexts, in particular hospitality settings like ...restaurants and cafés. The name KOTAN, meaning village in the local Ainu language, represents the stools origin from Japans northernmost island Hokkaido, which is also shown by the use of locally grown natural ash wood. Sustainability is key here: minimal material usage and a design language that transcends trends make for a long-life, timeless product that avoids obsolescence. The Kotan range and entire Conde House Japan collection are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

25.01.2022 A timely story of endurance, perseverance and staying true to your beliefs! 2019 marked the 130th anniversary of American furniture makers Bernhardt. For Bernhardt, this milestone was not only a time to celebrate, but also a time to reaffirm the values that have enabled the company to endure. Foremost among those values: creating quality furnitureand a deep commitment to people and relationships. Unique by todays standards, Bernhardt remains a family-owned business that is ...dedicated to the welfare of the community thats been its home since 1889. Bernhardts history, spanning more than 130 years, has seen them go through world wars, multiple economic depressions and massive social, cultural and technological changes; its a story of the pioneer spirit, of opportunities recognized and realized in spite of obstacles whilst sustaining their core beliefs: high business standards, the artistry of furniture making, the generations of artisans who form the bedrock of the company, and the welfare of the local community. Bernhardt Furnitures entire range are available from Aptos Cruz Galleries.

25.01.2022 The Team range of storage units designed by Mario Ruiz for Spanish company Expormim are not only practical, but beautifully made. With an extensive range of options for the legs, stains and materials (including ceramic doors/draws and upholstered and ceramic tops) and configurations; the Team range can be customised to fit any space or interior style. Nothing would be as it is in this collection without the material it is made of: solid wood. Wood gives identity to the pieces; it is the starting point, the reason of every detail in the project. Because this design is based on the details and they can only be constructed thanks to the material. Mario Ruiz

25.01.2022 'Tingari at Kaakuratintja' by Aboriginal Artist Willy Tjungurrayi is another feature in our current exhibition Songlines connecting country. Read below for more info! The Tingari Cycle is a secret song cycle sacred to initiated men. The Tingari are Dreamtime Beings who travelled across the landscape performing ceremonies to create and shape the country associated with Dreaming sites. The Tingari ancestors gathered at these sites for Maliera (initiation) ceremonies. The si...tes take the form of, and are located at, significant rockholes, sand hills, sacred mountains and water soakages in the western desert. Tingari may be poetically interpreted as song-line paintings relating to the songs (of the people)and creation stories (of places) in Pintupi mythology. Songlines is currently on Display at Aptos Cruz Galleries, so drop in and check it out. 24.01.2022 Great pic featuring the Eave modular sofa, Knitting chair and the brand new release Hashira collection (including pendants, desk and floor lamps) of lighting...all by Menu! The Hashira Collection is a modern, Nordic take on the traditional Japanese rice paper lantern. Taking its name from the Japanese word for column or pillar, the textile lamps fill a space with cosy, ambient light and, true to the nature of the lantern that inspired the collections creation, the slender st...ructure is visible through the shade, lending the glowing column a graphic expression. The lamp is offered in table, floor and pendant iterations, and the subdued silhouette and versatile nature of its design make it ideal in a private home placed on the floor, atop a console or suspended from the ceiling as well as in a professional setting, alone or in clusters. All Menu designs are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

24.01.2022 Jeff Mincham’s (Living Treasure and Order of Australia) prolific career as a leading figure in Australian ceramics, spanning more than four decades, has been characterised by a complex relationship with landscape. Strongly influenced by his childhood home in the Coorong and his current home in the Adelaide Hills, his work is the product of a constantly evolving relationship with his medium. His long and varied relationship with the capricious traditional Japanese Raku aesthet...ic has forged a distinct style in which the landscape is not so much viewed, as experienced; continuously re-evaluated through the complex contemplations of a master of his craft. I’ve always thought of myself as living in a landscape, perhaps because I’ve never lived in a city or even a town for longer than a few months. The events of the landscape draw me towards it. My works explore my engagement with its moods, its changes and dramas. They speak of harsh, dry, windswept lands, of the shimmering distance beneath brooding skies. A passing moment of mystery and wonderment captured by the eye and embedded in the memory. We currently have a number of Jeff’s artworks on display as part of our current group exhibition ‘Better Together’. Displayed: Still Life with a Tea Bowl II (various sizes)

22.01.2022 A big hello to all our friends Over the coming weeks/months, we at Aptos Cruz Galleries will be posting almost daily with inspiring content that celebrates human creativity, innovation and craftmanship with spotlights on great designs, brands, cultural artefacts, our artists and their artworks. Feel free to comment or even suggest posts and well do our best to make this an enjoyable, interesting and positive distraction First up is the iconic Series 7 chair! The Series 7... designed by Arne Jacobsen is by far the most sold chair in the history of Fritz Hansen and perhaps also in furniture history. The pressure moulded veneer chair is a further development of the classic Ant chair. The four-legged stackable chair represents the culmination of the lamination technique. The visionary Arne Jacobsen exploited the possibilities of lamination to perfection resulting in the iconic shape of the chair. Series 7 represents the chair in the Fritz Hansen collection with the widest range of applications . The collaboration between Arne Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen dates back to 1934. It was not until 1952 however that the team got its breakthrough with the Ant. It was succeeded by Series 7 in 1955, thereby enabling both Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen to write their names into furniture history. Arne Jacobsen was incredibly productive, both as architect and designer. At the end of the 1950s he designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, also designing the Egg, the Swan, the Swan Sofa and Series 3300 for the same project. The Series 7 and all of the Fritz Hansen range are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

22.01.2022 Ben Sando’s paintings have rich surface qualities that display strong composition and considered mark making. His works are warm and inviting with imperfect line, broken surface and drip marks, reminding us that they are a made work created by an artist’s hand. Ben seeks an implicit presence with his works; he tries to not over ‘clutter’ his paintings to allow the viewer to also contemplate notions of emptiness, erasure and quiet. His paints are mixed by hand using oxide pigm...ents, ochres, charcoal and some gouache and water colour pigments, mixed with PVA glue and water. Ben has also been known to source his own ochres from the Riverland. Ben’s debut as an emergent artist was at Aptos Cruz in 2006, exhibiting his first solo exhibition in 2008. He is now a regular artist at Aptos Cruz Galleries and featured in our current group exhibition ‘Better Together’. See more

20.01.2022 The EJ220 sofa has become synonymous with good craftsmanship and classic Danish design, and this year marks its 50th anniversary. In addition to being the only piece of furniture in the Erik Jørgensen collection that was designed by Erik Jørgensen himself, the EJ220 is also one of Erik Jørgensens most popular and best-selling designs; the EJ220 later became one of the foundations in the collection at Erik Jørgensen Møbelfabrik, as well as becoming the archetype for the classic Danish box sofa. The EJ220 and the entire Erik Jorgensen collection is available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

18.01.2022 Jason Millers furniture for De La Espada including the Elliot range displayed - is inspired by the housing trend currently prevalent in Brooklyn, where 100-year-old brownstones, originally built as single family homes then converted into apartment buildings, are being converted back into single family homes. Many of these buildings still retain original details such as ornate fireplaces, moldings and woodwork, but are in need of renovations, creating an interesting juxtaposition of old and new design. Jason Millers product line captures this juxtaposition of time, purpose, and aesthetics. The entire De La Espada range is available at Aptos Cruz Galleries

18.01.2022 Sandhills in another great artwork by Aboriginal Artist Nanyuma Napangati which is currently on display as part of our exhibition Songlines connecting country. She is the sister of Kanya Tjapangati and Charlie Tjapangati. Their country is in Pintupi territory across the W.A. border, west of Jupter Well in ...the Gibson Desert. Nanyuma paints her dreaming-country in the form of symbols representing women and their activities and the area in which she grew up. Her painting career runs parallel to the other senior women of Kiwirrkura and Kintore. She was involved with the 1999Kiwirrkura Womens painting, Genesis and Genius -Papunya Tula. 18.01.2022 The brand new Summit Lounge Chair designed by Norm Architects for Ariake Japan is inspired by the classic Scandinavian cabinetmaker chairs, the construction is light and transparent, clearly showing all elements of the chair. The cigar shaped profiles tells the story of where the chairs need to be strong and robust, therefore creating a natural flow throughout the chair. With a rather small footprint, wide armrests and high backrest, this chair is meant for both relaxing and engaged conversations. The name Summit refers to this meeting and discussion between people, where we imagine our chairs would play host to. The Summit Lounge and the entire Ariake collection is available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

15.01.2022 The classic CH22 Lounge Chair designed by the iconic Hans J Wegner in 1950, manufactured by the craftsmen at Carl Hansen & Son Denmark.

14.01.2022 Timeless design and craftsmanship combined; the CH22 lounge chair was one of the first chairs in Hans J. Wegner’s debut collection created exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950 a series that would become iconic for its representation of the modern Danish design philosophy. The CH22 lounge chair by Hans J. Wegner was brought back into production by Carl Hansen & Søn in 2016. It features elegant armrests, an envelope-woven paper cord seat, and a distinctive back shell in ...form-pressed veneer with striking oblong cover caps. The chair’s refined joinery is evident in the finger-jointed corners of the seat frame, with the front legs locking into wooden wedges in a color contrasting with that of the frame. Today, while parts of the process have been modernized, the CH22 is still manufactured as it was when Wegner oversaw initial production at the Hansen family facilities in 1950, with expert hand craftsmanship employed from assembly through to surface treatment and seat weaving. The CH22 and the entire Carl Hansen & Son collection are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

12.01.2022 Stewart MacFarlane is a notable contributor to the creation of an Australian identity. Dramatic, colourful, and sometimes shocking, MacFarlane’s paintings uncover the intense human dramas that run beneath the civilized order of society. In a framework of stark realism a realism where recognizable Australian cityscapes, superbly evoked, sum up all Western urban life the artist suddenly lets loose a surreality of human gesture and emotion, a cryptic enactment that seizes the viewer with its potency. Veronique Helmridge-Marsillian We currently have four large scale artworks by Stewart including the ‘Memoryville’ as shown as part of our current group exhibition Better Together’ Memoryville_S MacFarlane_1530x1830mmW_2005

11.01.2022 The Flowerpot Table Lamp designed in 1969 by Verner Panton, reflects a break from convention to embrace a more open, modern mentality that promoted peace and harmony. Such was the mindset of its designer, Verner Panton, one of the most forward-thinking talents of his time. Verner Panton started out as a painter before studying architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After an apprenticeship with architect / designer Arne Jacobsen, Panton pursued a path i...n furniture and interior design, where he became famous for his avant-garde designs. Such as chairs with no legs and a sofa placed vertically against the wall. In the 60s and 70s, his passion for designing entire environments led to immersive interiors featuring his hypnotic patterns and futuristic designs for furniture, lighting, wallpapers, posters and rugs. Pantons pioneering use of materials, colours and shapes earned him a reputation as a visionary. The Flowerpot series consitsts of several different models, including three pendants and two table lamps - all in a wide range of colours. The Flowerpot lights and the entire &Tradition collection are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

10.01.2022 The new Geometric Pendant designed by Boris Klimek and Lenka Damova for Brokis accentuates the aesthetic expression and structure of BROKIS GLASS, which itself is remarkably distinctive. The collection is defined by basic geometric shapes that characterize the overall contours of the lights and instil them with a singular graphic element to achieve a striking contrast with the animate, almost sculptural makeup of the glass. The suspension components make up the glass geom...etric shapes, their edges rendered in black profiles. The graphic aesthetics of the collection allow the lights to be arranged in a great number of final shapes circle and oval either as solitary lights or as a sort of jigsaw puzzle, which in the hands of architects can result in an endless variety of lighting combinations. Thus, the concept surpasses its primary function as a lighting fixture and opens the door to large-format blocks of light and other uncommon compositions. For the majority of the solitary lights, each side can be finished in glass of a different colour for even greater variability and originality. Available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

10.01.2022 The Bat Dining Chair - designed by Danish-Italian design-duo GamFratesi and manufactured made by Gubi - is created with a Scandinavian approach to crafts, simplicity and functionalism. The embracing shell with armrests equally embodies both aesthetics and comfort while carrying strong references to the interesting and distinctive shape of a bat’s wingspan. The wide range of shell colours, upholstery options and diverse bases provides for a personalised expression that makes t...he Bat Dining Chair fit perfectly into a variety of public and private contexts. Due to its unique design, the textile of the fully upholstered Bat Dining Chair can be changed with time to give the chair a different expression and new life to the interior decoration. The Bat Dining Chair and the entire Gubi collection is available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

08.01.2022 A great article about our friends Damon Moon and his father Milton Moon. Worth a read :)

08.01.2022 Next up, a story of post-war innovation: the iconic CH25 chair! The CH25 is one of the first four chairs Hans J. Wegner created exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn at the beginning of the collaboration which started in 1949. The chair, considered revolutionary at the time, was put into production in 1950. The CH25 lounge chair, like many of Hans J. Wegners other iconic designs, is clean and simple in its distinctive shape. But its introduction caused a stir due to Wegners cho...ice of materials on the backrest and seat. The woven paper cord, a replacement for seagrass developed during World War II, had not been used in furniture before. However, Wegner was enthusiastic about the look of the material and its non-stretching and optimal durability, and so were generations after him. The CH25 lounge chair has remained tremendously popular and has been in continuous production since 1950: a testament to Wegners visionary approach. It takes a skilled craftsman 10 hours and approximately 400 meters of paper cord to complete one seat and backrest by hand, using a particular technique resembling weaving, which is visible on both sides of the backrest. The striking result of this exacting process is an exceptional chair that is fascinating from all angles. The CH25 and the entire Carl Hansen collection are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

07.01.2022 Next up is the inspiring story of Japanese based company Ariake. Ariake is a furniture brand founded by Legnatec and Hirata Chair, two factories from the furniture producing town of Morodomi in Saga prefecture, Japan. Named after the Ariake Sea in Southern Japan, Ariake means daybreak in Japanese. It symbolizes a new chapter for the two factories as they embark on a collaboration with international designers for the global market. It is our belief that strong working relation...ships are the foundation of good products. Furniture is made for social situations where people live, work and eat together. The creation of the Ariake brand and furniture designs were done over two intensive workshops in Morodomi where furniture designers, art director, photographer and craftsmen did the same we lived, worked and ate together over. Despite language barriers, the designers and craftsmen generated a collective energy and mutual trust that helped define the soul of the brand. This resulted in a collection of furniture that utilizes the best of hand and machine, inspired by the spirituality of Japanese culture and urban living contexts. Ariake currently have a 30-piece collection (with more releases due this year) made from oak, ash, hinoki, cedar, leather, paper cord, cotton canvas, upholstery and unique finishes such as sumi and indigo dye. Each piece is crafted in Morodomi, with furniture designs by Anderssen & Voll, Gabriel Tan, Keiji Ashizawa, Norm Architects, Shin Azumi, Staffan Holm, Zoe Mowat, Studio MK27, branding by Anner Perrin and photography by Sebastian Stadler. The complete Ariake collection is available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

06.01.2022 Next up is the inspiring history of Industrial Designer and Sculptor Bernard Schottlanderenjoy! Bernard Schottlander (designer of the Mantis Lamp shown and made by DCW Editions Paris) was born in Mainz, Germany in 1924 and moved to England in 1939. After serving with the British Army in India, he learnt to weld and took a course in Sculpture at Leeds College of Art and subsequently with the help of a bursary at the Anglo-French art centre in St Johns Wood. Bernard Schot...tlander described himself as a designer for interiors and a sculptor for exteriors. After several successful years as an industrial designer, Bernard Schottlander chose to concentrate on sculpture. In the late 1950s he established a workshop in North London where he was ably assisted for many years by George Nash. From 1965 he taught metalwork at St Martins School of Art. In the same year he was part of the group show Six Artists at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London and in the following year (1966) had his first solo show at the Hamilton Galleries, London. Movement is intrinsic to all of Schottlanders work: an artist, an engineer and in no small measure a handyman, he devised a clever system of counterweights combined with a series of strong and flexible metal bars. The shade also is unique of its kind. Like an acrobat suspended in mid-air, it is made from aluminium using spinning and chasing techniques that are a part of the metalworkers inventory of skills, but to which he has brought his sculptors eye to create a helical movement in which the symmetrical and the asymmetrical are in opposition. All of DCW Editions designs are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

05.01.2022 Op art (optical art) developed in the 1960s as an artistic style that used geometric shapes to generate optical illusions. With a nod to the genre, designer Remedios Simón created Spiro, a charismatic pendant whose frame contains a mass of irregular wood veneer spirals. Available in six outer shell versions (cherrywood or red veneer, large acrylic white or black, medium acrylic white or black), Spiro is an impressive light with an enchanting aura. Similar to op art, Spiro plays with the physiology and psychology of human perception, its charm utterly irresistible. The entire LZF range are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries

04.01.2022 Lola is the latest lamp for LZF designed by long-time collaborator Ray Power. Showcasing Powers ability to create imaginative three-dimensional forms, Lola is a conical lamp with an intricate geometric pattern. A veritable labour of love, Lolas shape went through many iterations, drawings and prototypes. The end result is, without doubt, a marvel of lighting design. Available in White, Grey or Natural Beech at Aptos Cruz Galleries.

01.01.2022 After fondly recalling memories of his grandfathers favourite tailor shop, Portuguese designer Rui Alves returned to the past to find inspiration for crafting the Tailor Sofa. The idea was to celebrate the sofa in all its forms with a structured yet light shape and a sturdy wooden frame, designed for daily use. Now available in a new material dark stained oak - the frame and its foam-shell-covered upholstery are formed with an impressive attention to detail, as wooden joi...nts carefully frame the round shape of the sofa, giving the piece a handmade look and feel. As past and present blend in perfect synergy, the Tailor Sofa is to be cherished for many years to come; its appreciation for the past serving as a gentle reminder for the skills and expertise it has been crafted with, as both are passed on from generation to generation. The Tailor Chair and the entire Menu collection are available at Aptos Cruz Galleries.
