11.01.2022 We get a lot of questions about the history of our Hotel Claremont. Well, our lovely old hotel was built in 1880, as the 'South Yarra Coffee Palace', or a temperance hotel - that's right, alcohol free! Coffee Palaces were considered 'moral'places to stay, able to cater for women and families. The temperance hotel movement was strongest in Victoria, and resulted in the establishment of many grand Melbourne buildings...including the building now occupied by the Windsor Hotel ...in Spring St. By 1888, there were more than 50 Coffee Palaces in Melbourne. Coffee Places were often very grand, as funds from Melbourne's early boom years were poured into their construction. Some have not survived, but many have been repurposed - and of course a few, like us, are still hotels. You can read more on the link below, or take a look at our photos.
