11.01.2022 Looking back on 2020 . First up: Our biggest project as an art centre to date. The wonderful Brook Andrew invited us to be part of the Biennale of Sydney, r...ealising a special project envisioned by our late Elder Kunmanara Williams. An installation of 36 protest banners was on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales for over six months. Since Mr Williams passed away before realising the project, the art centre and community took it on, bringing his words to life once again. . 'Me and Sammy talked about using the kulata and the paintings together to send a strong message. Those spears show that we’re protecting our land and culture we’re guarding it. Me and Sammy both worked on stations when we were young men, we’ve seen the changes because of our Land Rights Act. It’s up to us now, all of us, to look after our land and keep our culture strong.' (Kunmanara Williams, 2018) . This project was supported by the Fondation OPALE and Australia Council for the Arts, and we can't wait to share future iterations with you! . . . 09.01.2022 Josina Pumani working on a new body of work for an upcoming show in the APY Art Centre Collective studio in Adelaide . Did you know that we co-founded the APY... Art Centre Collective a few years ago? With the help our our incredible friends and the great local leaders directing the Collective we have achieved so much. Thank you . What started as painting camps and other inter-generational learning projects amongst the different APY Art Centres very quickly grew into what is now the @apy_ac_collective. Following the vision of our Elders we have started our own galleries in Sydney and Adelaide to increase opportunities for early career artists and connect with the contemporary art world in Australia on our own terms. Last year, we opened our own studio space in Adelaide, supporting artists who have to be off country for personal or medical reasons. The @apy_ac_collective town studio is a great way for us to stay connected to our families whilst in Adelaide, and continue working on our art careers even if we temporarily have to be away from community. . . . #ourartourbusiness #josinapumani #contemporaryart #aboriginalart #indigenousart #australianart #aboriginalowned #indigenousbusiness See more
