From left: Aline learned how to swim with us at @yerongapool, and then trained and worked with us providing water safety for her #burundi community in Brisbane. She is now a Nurse. ... In the middle is Aye Moo who learned to swim with us through our partnership with @access_services, getting wet at @loganwestaquaticandfitness. He then became an Education Assistant in the water with us, assisting the #karencommunity and many more who needed help in our waterways. Kate (far right) is now a School Teacher and delivered our water safety and English language program to thousands of refugees. 14.01.2022 #foodforthought As a Project, our aim is to introduce New Australians to aquatic venues across Queensland. Behind the scenes, out recruitment often takes twice as much time as the delivery of the aquatic program itself. Something we have no control over (although we try our hardest) is the receptiveness of the chosen venue. We are a roaming Project and rely on the pool in the identified region. Sometimes the person on the front desk, or the lifeguard on deck, or even the Man...ager are not as excited as we are. When we intervene cross culturally, we are often working through misinterpretation of body language (non verbal) from eye contact and hand gestures to facial expressions. The English may not always be understood by our #cald participants but the tone of voice is. How welcome our participants feel at a venue is key to ensuring they come back the following week. Sounds simple, but its not always the case. Most of our pools however, have superstar welcomes for our #newaustralians! Big shout out to Yeronga Park Swimming Complex.....our last survey of 500 participants showed that CALD comfort levels are so high at this venue, people bypass over four public pools on their way to Yeronga. Not always a smooth ride, however our COVID19 posts are all about positivity, so we will share one of our favourite memories: @yerongapool one of our adult participants from South Sudan was trying her hardest to swim a full length of the 25m pool. She h...ad only been in the water for a grand total of six hours over six weeks and her determination was not an uncommon trait among our wonderful participants. However, the quintessential Aussie lap swimmer in the lane next to hers had been observing her progress and finally struck up a conversation. Tales of South Sudan, refugee camps, the Aussie beach and freestyle tips, English and effective nose bubbles were part of the cross cultural exchange. 10.01.2022 QWEP: QLD Water Exercise & Physiotherapy is a sister program of The Aqua English Project. Each Monday we will share the new QWEP Aqua Aerobics video that can be undertaken at home as a wet or dry aqua workout. All you need is a pool noodle (but not necessary). This half hour workout is part of the City of Gold Coast Active & Healthy Parks Program and is in lieu of our Monday 11:00am - 11:30am 1/2 Hour Power Aqua that would normally be delivered Helensvale Aquatic Centre. All the same TCs apply - seek medical clearance if you are experiencing any physical discomfort, and send through any suggestions to Aqua English or QWEP for the ten week Aqua Series. :-) Enjoy an alternate aqua adventure during COVID19.

It was their first time at Chandler and to a swimming event like this....they only started swimming with us eight weeks ago! 03.01.2022 This was the scene facing QLD nine years ago today...so very different to the fires and drought we are currently experiencing. You may not know that @aquaenglish worked with @lockyervalley_regionalcouncil in the aftermath. We were tasked with getting the CALD community into water safety workshops, and discussing the trauma many had faced.
