24.01.2022 We are working hard for reopening! We’re sure you understand what a juggle it is to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions with pool space and numbers and making sure we have the right - but we are getting closer! Jo has begun work on ages and levels, to make sure your little people are in the best levels for them - as much as we can predict, anyway. We’ve spoken with other swim school operators that have already opened their doors, and they have told us just how excited all th...e kids have been to get back into the water, and how amazing the parents have been at working with the new regimes set up. We can’t tell you how much we’re looking forward to seeing you back on deck and in the pool. An email will be coming your way with your child’s swim time and COVID-19 plan, so make sure you keep an eye out over the next week or so in your inbox. We will post up here to advise when emails have been sent through to you.

23.01.2022 SwimSafer Week: No piece of equipment can replace supervision of your children in water. Accidents happen - children topple, or don't know how to use the equipment properly, it can become detached. The most dangerous part of using flotation devices is making the assumption your child is safe once they are in them. ... Please, keep your eyes on your children, and for young children or unskilled swimmers, stay within arms reach at all times.

23.01.2022 Heads up! There is some traffic changes to our steet if you come in off Drakeford drive into Jenke Cct. Might be best to come in near Namadgi and take the first entrance into our carpark! Give yourself a few extra minutes to get here

22.01.2022 Growing up in the ACT region, I spent time at the beach without ever knowing how to identify a rip current. Very rarely did we ever visit south coast beaches that were patrolled, either, so I didn't have the flags to show me what "safe" water looked like, either. My parents were from outback Queensland, and so beach holidays were something that weren't a feature of their lives until they moved down here. They didn't know how to identify a rip. The benefit of the internet is that we all have access to that information - and I hope that this video helps you to understand what to look for, and how to teach your children what to look for. - Jody

20.01.2022 JOHN MARSDEN’S TIPS FOR PARENTS 1. Give children space. Back off. Let them roam. Let them be bored. Don't over-plan their lives. Cut way back on the after-scho...ol activities programs. 2. Keep away from all those ghastly, soulless, sterile playgrounds. Keep away from shopping malls. Look for real places. Wild places. 3. Be an adult. Say no to your children at least once a day. If the role of Adult in your family is vacant, then one of your children will fill it. And it won't be pretty. 4. Don't take up all the space. If you are dominating, loud, forceful, your children are highly likely to become passive, lacking spirit and personality and/or sullen. 5. Believe about 40 per cent of the dramatic stories your children tell you of the injustices, corruption and satanic practices happening at school. 6. Teach them empathy. For example, after their jubilant victory celebrations when they win a sporting match, remind them that their jubilation was only possible because someone else the losers have been made to feel awful. 7. Help them develop language skills. Don't finish their sentences for them. Don't correct them when they mispronounce a word they'll work it out sooner or later. Ask them open-ended questions, that need a detailed answer, not Yes/No questions. 8. Make sure they have regular jobs/duties at home and that those jobs are done to a consistently high standard. 9. Don't whinge endlessly about the miseries of your adult life. A lot of children now are fearful about growing up because their parents paint such a grim picture of the awfulness ahead. 10. Teach them to be very wary of people who Absolutely Know the Absolute Truth about Absolutely Everything! The colour of truth is always grey. Extreme positions are for the ignorant. Every creature, every person and every situation is complex. The universe is a wonderful mystery.

20.01.2022 Well, things are starting to rev up a bit, as the government steers us closer to re-opening. We’re getting enquires from current swim school families, as well as new enquires from people interested in bringing their lovely little people to us. But we’re not there yet. And we have to be careful to ensure that everyone entering the business is as safe as possible. We are in the midst of planning what that re-opening will look like, and making sure our staff are aware of our re...sponsibilities in keeping COVID-19 out of our centre. We’ve also taken this time to do a deep dive into what tweaks we can make in our program to ensure all children are catered for. It will be interesting to see how they all go getting back into the water after such a sustained break. in the meantime while you are waiting? It’s crucial that you continue to the small businesses like ours so that we can all continue to keep going. We are hearing now of more and more small businesses that are having to close doors permanently, so please, actively and loudly supporting them helps. recommendations are the most powerful adverts we can use, so tell your friends about us, tell them about Toots, tell them about our swimwear range. our posts on your own Facebook pages. our business when you see requests for recommendations on pages such as Canberra Mums. - don’t just contain your support to us. Help out every small business you love. Share their pages, recommend them to your friends. Help everyone come out of this time with hope that we’ll all be ok.

19.01.2022 With the new Kambah COVID-19 testing centre now set up across the road at the car park opposite the building, we are now sharing the main pool car park with Inflatable World and with parents doing school drop off and pick up at Namadgi School. It has moments of being busy, but you should still easily get a park close to the centre. The link road running between the back of the shops and the bulk storage facility and car park has been closed, so the best way to access the po...ol is to turn from O’Halloran Circuit down the side of Jenke Circuit we occupy. Obviously there will be an increase in traffic in the area, so please give yourselves an extra minute or two to get here in time. Thank you for being resilient amongst all these continued changes. We appreciate you all and your flexibility enormously.

19.01.2022 We would like to say a very big thank you to everyone for continuing to adhere to the restrictions in place when coming to their swimming lessons. Question: Why can’t we use the attendance check-off sheets to submit to the Department of Health if it is required at some stage? Answer: The best, most accurate form to hand over to the Health Department is the sign in sheet, which clearly states the order people have arrived, as well as current mobile numbers for all adults... entering the facility. We’ll continue to use these for the time being. Question: Things have been pretty good in the ACT, why can’t we just bring along an extra family member? Answer: To keep us up and running, it’s important to stick to the one adult per family rule *as much as possible*. There are a few families where they must bring an extra set of hands to help out because of one parent being in the water while other young children are unsupervised at the side. In this circumstance, it’s a matter of safety that an extra adult comes to watch. Unfortunately, we cannot allow extra spectators to come along. If Aunty, Granddad, other parent wants to come along and watch the kids swim, then we ask that they alone enter the facility with the children. We have no problem with people taking it in turns to bring the children each week. We just can’t have multiple people here if they are not necessary. Question: When will be able to use the change rooms again? Answer: We can’t predict when this is likely to happen at this stage. For now, continue to bring your extra towels and dressing gowns, and hope that the warmer weather will make going home wet more comfortable soon.

16.01.2022 It feels very much like we have all been looking forward to Christmas more this year than any other year before this. I think everyone is well and truly ready to say goodbye to 2020, and have a new year to look forward to. Small businesses have hard it super hard this year, so we decided we needed to ask for your help on behalf of our small business friends. We'd love to ask a favour - could you please share their link in the comments below so that we can all support the...m? Here are some other ideas you could use to help too (if, like me, you haven't even started your Christmas shopping or planning yet...): - Order your meat from your local butcher, your fruit and veg from your local farmers market instead of the supermarket - Organise to hold your family Christmas breakfast, lunch or dinner at a restaurant or cafe, or get them to cater your party if they are shutting down. - Buy presents from small boutique businesses or order special gifts straight from the maker online. - Buy your Christmas celebration drinks from a local brewery or vineyard - Take your recipient on a spending spree instead of buying a gift - Decorate your house with fresh flowers from your local florist - Buy an experience rather than a gift - a zoo pass, a guided tour, a hike, wine-tasting... - Talk to your friends and family and ask them to buy local for their gifts too (or share this post with your group) - Travel to an area that has suffered, and spend with them.

16.01.2022 One, to... no, that's not right... One, too... that's not it either... One, TWO! That's it! Two days left before we are in our togs, cossies, swimmers, speedos and ready to see your lovely kids for 2021 swimming.... Not sure of the date? Swimming starts Monday 11th Jan! [email protected]

16.01.2022 Hi everyone - please be careful as you are coming and going from the pool today - this little cutie has just been encouraged out of the nest from Mum and Dad, but they are around and being quite protective of Junior. It may be best to walk around the garden bed and come the long way to the entrance. Thank you!!

15.01.2022 Stop! Quick, go check your emails! You've got mail from us! We are waiting to hear from you to help with our plans to reopen. Haven't got it? Check your spam folder, a few people told us they found our email there! Still nothing!? Send us PM and we will get the email to you. Thank you to all those families who got back to us straight away. 14.01.2022 Guess what country has the best retention of swimmers over Winter? The plucky Canadians! But guess what? This year, due to the crazy year we’ve been having, us Canberran’s are super-committed to making up for lost time! ... It’s awesome to see everyone getting the hang of bringing extra towels, warm jackets, beanies, dressing gowns - it all kind of feels like a pyjama party! Make sure you bring some warm footwear to leave in, and feel free to bring a flask of hot chocolate for the kids post swim.

14.01.2022 Please be aware of the 1.5m social distancing especially after the school holidays when lots of people have visited lots of different places. Let’s keep us all that bit safer!

12.01.2022 Please read all the way to the end for important COVID-19 updates. Well, we are Day 4 into lessons and all of the AHELP Teamsters have noticed that although there have been a few nerves from a few children, the overwhelming response has been pure joy! The children are all so happy to be back in the water again, and it tells us just what a good job we do here. This is the happy place for so many little swimmers. :)... HUGE THANK YOU'S to all of our families who have adhered to our new rules. We want to stay open, and your co-operation in this means we can continue to do so. Please remember - we don't want to have to police you, that's just awkward for everyone. * THANK YOU: for wrapping up and changing on deck, and not changing in the bathrooms - you can see that areas of both the boys and girls bathrooms are cordoned off. We appreciate you respecting this, and helping your children do the right thing. * THANK YOU: to those who are not bringing extra spectators. We know it's sad that grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends have to miss out on seeing your children swim, however if one or two people bring one or two extra visitors, we will quickly have more people within our centre than we are allowed to, and will face shut down or fines for breaching COVID-19 regulations. * THANK YOU: for not attending if you have recently visited a COVID-19 hotspot, for not attending if you or your child display any coronavirus symptoms, and for self-isolating if you are awaiting results of COVID testing.

11.01.2022 Barriers are sometimes no barrier for children who are very determined - anyone with biscuits hidden on the top shelf of the pantry can attest to that. But unlike biscuits on the top shelf, climbing the pool fence is far more immediately dangerous to your toddler. - Is your gate lockable - with a key? ... - Are there chairs, toys, trampolines, plants/pots, available that your determined child can use to help them get into your pool environment? - Can your child climb the fencing you have? - Do you have adequate pool covers over the pool? Once you take your winter cover off the pool, is your child able to slide under the cover? - If it's not your pool, but a relative or neighbours, is it up to scratch? - Do you talk to your children about making sure they have an adult with them any time they are near water? - Does your child know to ask for an adult to help them if their toy falls into the water, and not to reach for it themselves. Not only is making sure your pool has adequate barriers essential, but getting into the habit of checking the water first when you can't find your child is not only recommended but necessary when you have a backyard pool, pond, or other kind of water. 10.01.2022 Interesting results from this study on device usuage. I know it’s hard to give up some peace and quiet in the household, but maybe a little pull back on screen time will benefit your child.

06.01.2022 ** ** Phew - what a busy week we’ve had! Everyone one has adjusted so well to not being able to access the bathrooms for changing, but here are some further ! Arrive dressed in your swimmers already. Then you only need to throw in an into your bag to wear home. ... Bring extra towels for baby. Two small towels for Bub - one to wrap as soon as baby gets out of the pool, and a dry towel for changing. The old school square cloth nappies are the perfect size for children up to about 2 years of age, and won’t make your washing load or bags big and bulky. Older Ducks can also be wrapped warm and cosy straight into dressing gowns and slippers. Take off your T shirt before you get out of the water. The t-shirts are needed in lessons to teach your children to take hold of something and pull themselves up to breath. Once the lesson is finished, you don’t need to keep it on. Have a hoodie, towel or bathrobe nearby. That way as soon as you get out of the pool, you will be warm and cosy while you change your child. Bring a laundry basket to throw your towels and jumpers in to make it easier to take them home. See more

06.01.2022 Well, that's a wrap, everyone! What a fantastic week we've had helping your children learn just a bit more about being safer around the water. 06.01.2022 Ooh it’s getting busy! We are getting to the crazy time of year where thoughts start to head towards arrangements for next year for many families. Do you have a child starting pre-school or primary school next year? ... Now is the time to think about where you may need to switch them to for the upcoming year. There may not be spaces available right now, but we can wait-list you to switch or when a spot becomes available. At the moment, we are still restricted to maintaining 1 person per 4 square metres INDOORS rule - as much as we want to allow more people into the facility and open bathrooms, we just can’t. (1 person per 2m squared is for outdoor venues only at this stage.) But to that point, don’t worry! You’ll be the first to know when we can relax it and see more of your faces on the poolside. Keep your eyes peeled for a SwimSafer Week Announcement next Monday (no, it’s not swim safer week next week...) Have you downloaded the Check In Canberra app? We now have the QR code at the sign in table and at reception for your convenience. It’s awesomely fast! See more

05.01.2022 Well! We are getting close to the end of school term, and wanted to make sure we cover all the things that need to be covered. Firstly, thanks for a fantastic SwimSafer Week last week! The kids had a great time, rescuing, saving themselves and helping us find Jo! Direct Debits are happening next Monday 21st Sept.... - Monday families will have a 4 week block (as Monday the 5th October is a public holiday - Tues-Sat families will be a 5 week block Although school holidays are due to commence Saturday the 26th Sept, we will be continuing on with our lessons. Our next scheduled lesson break is over the Christmas/New Years period. (Who can believe that we are starting to think about Christmas/New Years??) Once again, we thank everyone who has made the effort to wrap and go with their children, to keep their children away from classes when they've been unwell, and to sign in, sanitize and keep their distance while they've been in the facility. Now that it's starting to finally warm up again, the task of leaving in wet swimmers doesn't feel quite so awful. We really do appreciate everyone for helping us do the right thing. Thank you also to the families who have been sending us feedback! We've overwhelmingly received so much positive praise for our staff and facility, it's been so heartening. We've had some feedback which has helped us tweak some things that needed tweaking to do our best to keep everyone informed of our processes, or run things more efficiently. We love the chance to see things from your perspective and to continue to improve our communication and service for you. Finally, do you have anything you would like to chat to us about? Any burning questions about anything that you are busting to find out? Email us at [email protected] for any swimming- or program-related questions - we are only to happy to help.
