The YMCA Kew and Ashburton centres and the Melbourne City Baths are following directives from their respective councils and have closed from this week until further notice. Aquanation Ringwood and Braybrook Pools are being guided by the Government Health Department and remain open with strict hygiene practices in place and proper chlorination. There have been no cases of COVID-19 at any of the pools. It's ok to cancel if you are not comfortable coming to your class. Please ring Mandy or email if you have any questions or worries on 0419 525483 or 9826 6346 [email protected]

16.01.2022 Coronavirus: Proper chlorination stops water transmission, HSE advises Drinking water and swimming pools rendered safe by appropriate levels of chlorine ... Coronavirus cannot be transmitted in drinking water and swimming pools so long as they are properly chlorinated, the Health Service Executive has advised. Adherence to current recommended disinfection practice is sufficient to inactivate the Covid-19 virus in chlorinated drinking water and swimming pools, according to advice note prepared by the HSE to address concerns on the issue. Chlorination is the most commonly used method of water treatment in Ireland for both drinking water and swimming pools. The HSE says it has a long history of preventing waterborne illness, with the World Health Organisation recommending specific concentrations of chlorine in drinking water, as well as specific contact time needed to ensure dangerous germs are killed. chlorine in drinking water, as well as specific contact time needed to ensure dangerous germs are killed. There are three difference groups of viruses: enveloped viruses, surrounded by an outer lipid membrane; and large and small non-enveloped viruses, which lack this membrane. Easier to kill According to the advice note, enveloped viruses are easier to kill than non-enveloped viruses: Sars-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the Covid-19 outbreak, is an enveloped virus and therefore the easiest to kill of the three types of viruses. The World Health Organisation recommended chlorination level of 15mg.min/litre is sufficient to kill non-enveloped viruses such as poliovirus, rotavirus and coxsackievirus, and an enveloped virus such as Covid-19 would be inactivated at even lower levels, the document says. The same rationale applies to standards used to control microbiological hazards in swimming pools treated with disinfectant, it says, although the amount of chlorine required varies according to the type of pool or chlorination chemical used. Jacuzzis or other types of spa pools may need a higher amount, for example. Of all the organisms that threaten the purity of water supplies and swimming pools, cryptosporidium requires the highest dose of chlorine to be inactivated. From The Irish Times Mon 9th March 2020

15.01.2022 A baby born after a miscarriage, or loss of a baby, is referred to as a Rainbow baby. Today we remember all babies born s...leeping, the ones we've carried but never met, those we've held but couldn't take home, the ones that came home but didn't stay. Make this your status if you or someone you know has suffered the loss of a baby. The majority won't do it, because miscarriage, still birth and SIDs is still a taboo subject. 10.01.2022 The threat of COVID-19 has widespread impacts on mental health, with expecting and new parents being particularly vulnerable. The Perinatal Anxiety & Depressio...n Australia (PANDA) helpline is is still in operation and they are making contingency plans to operate remotely if needed. PANDA has also developed a range of resources for those seeking support. I recommend reading through them even if you are feeling ok at the moment. There are many great strategies recommended. PANDA can be reached on 1300 726 306. They are experiencing an increase in demand at present, so wait times may be impacted.

05.01.2022 This is re-posted from Dr Kylie Goh - Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Pregnancy and COVID-19. What you need to know This is the latest information we have from The Royal Women's Hospital and Royal Aust & NZ College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists RANZCOG... "While published scientific data regarding the effects of COVID-19 on pregnant women is currently limited, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) has issued the following information (16 March): >> A recent Lancet study of 19 pregnant women infected with COVID-19 did not demonstrate evidence of vertical transmission. While the numbers are few, this information, combined with the knowledge of the low pathogenicity for the fetus of more common respiratory viruses is reassuring. >> Pregnant women are encouraged to discuss their concerns and, in particular, to report any early symptoms to their obstetrician, GP or midwife in a timely manner. >> Pregnant women are advised to avoid all non-essential overseas travel. >> While it will not influence response to COVID-19 infection, everyone will reduce their risk of influenza through vaccination. >> Information and advice to the general public applies equally to pregnant women."
