25.01.2022 Talk about an entry... Zip lining is the only way to access the world's tallest treehouse in the jungles of northern Laos

24.01.2022 It's easy to fall deeper into the rabbit hole in Old Delhi, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I spent the day yesterday wandering down endless small alleyways, sometimes only half a metre wide, and some shared by pedestrians, motorbikes, rickshaws, dogs, goats, and the occasional cow. This particular alley had a small shop where I found this gent making metal dishes. He invited me in with a smile a jiggle of his head, and no word of English. It's in these back streets that you find a great insight into the daily life of these people. A chance find, indeed.

21.01.2022 A morning spent at the Taj is something that cant be missed when in India.
20.01.2022 Welcome to Turtuk... A small isolated Islamic village only a stone's throw from the Pakistani border. These men were born Pakistani however in 1971, overnight, India took control of this strategic area, changing their nationality. Capturing this image was challenging when a conversation about the weather could only be created through hand gestures and miming until we shared a common laugh. The greater challenge, however, was creating an image that reflected their gentle and unique culture. Despite their intimidating presence to me as I approached them, these gentlemen broke a mould in my perception and turned out to be some of the friendliest people I've encountered on this journey. Friendship doesn't always need a common tongue, or belief system.

19.01.2022 If you head off the beaten path in the state of Meghalaya, India you can find a place that is as close to a fairy tale as you will ever find. Among its lush, wet rainforests you'll find these incredible living root bridges. The one photographed above is the longest in the world and would have taken more than a century to grow. 18.01.2022 A little bit of Hawai'i to break up all the Asia shots... because there's more Asia to come
17.01.2022 This woman is a village elder from the Karen S'gaw tribe in northern Thailand. She, like many others in the village, emigrated to Thailand from Myanmar to escape the growing civil conflicts and, at present, is still stateless with no national identity. She lives in this remote mountainside village with little to no access to health care. Her husband, who is deaf, lies inside the house, unwell. It's also wet season so the opportunity to get him into a vehicle and to the ne...arest doctor (1.5 hours drive), is near impossible should he need it. I was privileged to have a very brief meeting opportunity with her. She accepted my request for a photograph, and in that moment I felt the need to get it right the first time. I didn't want to turn this into a photo shoot session and so allowed myself one photograph. Needless to say, this was one of the most challenging or nervous shots I have taken in my career. Feeling a little overwhelmed with my opportunity to take her picture, I took the shot, gave my thanks, and walked away without checking it on my camera. Thankfully it turned out ok! This image can be found on my website as part of a blog, with more images of the locals from this region and the incredible countryside. If you wish to see it, head to http://www.mattshepherd.com.au/uncat/good-morning-thailand/

16.01.2022 Following my return from nearly five months of traveling overseas through southern Asia, I've updated my website to show some of my newest work from this time spent abroad. I've focused more on street photography, trying to capture the cultures and daily life of the people from Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and India. If you want to have a look, you can head to www.mattshepherd.com.au to check it out. Most of the new work can be found in the Impromptu portfolio. Any comments are always welcome. Matt

13.01.2022 Trying to locate Pakistan's flag that sits along a ridge just six kilometres from us in Turtuk, India. In fact the whole area of Turtuk was Under Pakistan's control until 1971 when India gained control of this strategic area.
12.01.2022 I've been offline for the last week or so chasing wild horses in the Himalayas of northern India. This gentle creature let me creep within touching distance and allowed me this image.

12.01.2022 A grandma that I had the pleasure of meeting in Ladakh, India.
12.01.2022 This photo is a favourite from a morning at the Taj Mahal. It seems fitting to share with you a photo of the one I love, while admiring the light and shadows of this grand monument to love.
11.01.2022 Young men working in a Yangon construction site. Here they wear longyis (sarong-like clothes) instead of trousers, and the safety gear is evidently absent.
11.01.2022 I gotta tell ya, zip-lining through the remote Laotian jungle gave me an almost child-like freedom that I haven't felt before. Parts of the line were 150 metres above the ground, however, the feeling of sheer excitement leaves no room for fear.

02.01.2022 The guys at Positive Change for Marine Life have been doing some amazing work in India dealing with the plastic waste problem. There's a fundraising event this Sunday in Byron Bay to which I've donated a large framed limited edition piece (see below). If you're in the Gold Coast / Byron area, it'd be great to see your faces there to support this great cause. There'll be music, art, auctions, and raffles. The event starts at 5:30pm AEST (4:30pm QLD) at the Byron Brewery.
01.01.2022 Welcome to your childhood fantasy... This is a living root bridge in the dense Jungles of India. It took around 200 years to grow and can withstand the wettest of monsoons.
