25.01.2022 When it comes to turns in competitive swimming we often don’t think about them until we need to learn one. And the reality is that there are a bunch of different turns to master... flip turn, tumble turn, bucket turn, open turn, cross over turn... So instead of looking at all the different turns right now we wanted to break down what skills are at the core of ANY turn. 1: Breath control 2: Body orientation 3: Rotation... When a person has a quality foundation in these three areas any turn can be mastered faster, easier and more precisely. If you would like to see our breakdown of tumble turns, then check out that series here https://youtu.be/gSo9iOsrOHg

24.01.2022 This week you can get an extra dose of PD with Aquatic Education! Marcelle will be presenting a session for AUSTSWIM on Thursday and Friday Max will have a session In The Training Room at Noon. Stay tuned for more details on that one...

24.01.2022 In this weeks chat on deck we sat down with Guilly from the Brisbane Jets. Come and join us as we find out about his past as a swimmer and his approach now as a coach. https://us02web.zoom.us//register/WN_PKhReJ0_TFKxLspddqCvdA

24.01.2022 For many of us when we started out in the aquatics industry there was no long-term or clear view of a career. Join us for our chat on deck with Sean from Aquatic Achievers Swim Schools who started out this way but has made a full time career in this great industry. Quick disclaimer... We wanted to get a nice background view. Everything was set up and then the wind picked up and reeked havoc on the audio. Hope that you still enjoy. It is a trimmed down version of our chat...

22.01.2022 Join us In the Training Room now! A great session on Infant Aquatics

21.01.2022 join Dave and Judy Watts from Judy Watts swim school discussing water safety

21.01.2022 New to the Training Room is drill breakdowns. These sessions will focus on a drill or combination of drills and look at what the drill is, which swimmers it is appropriate for, how to breakdown the process and what teachers/coaches are looking for. We encourage everyone to try the drills and experiance them for themselves. Let us know what you think and how you find the drill.

21.01.2022 Mel Arndt from Story Time Swimming joins us for a chat on deck.

20.01.2022 This week we have a bit of a different guest for a chat on deck. Scott from Results Physiotherapy (& our neighbour at Sleeman Sports Complex) joined Max and Marcelle to talk about injury prevention for both swimmers and teachers. Make sure you check out the video on Friday.

20.01.2022 enjoyed discussing risk assessments around training on this structure this morning

19.01.2022 In lieu of a 'Chat On Deck' this week we wanted to share a thought instead. During this crazy time we have all had some time to reflect. One of the things that comes up in discussion is 'Why do we do, what we do?" And the simple answer so often is 'because we love it' but we wanted to dive deeper (yes pun!) into this idea and pass it on to you. We would like you to share the moments that make you love being/working in, on or around the water.... For me (Nick) I had a moment recently watching a class with a student that was not comfortable, had anxiety and real fear of water. The teacher working with this student had a great approach. Worked on building trust, was upbeat, calm and considered in their approach... The moment that teacher had a break through with that student and they shared a small victory together was so rewarding to see. Knowing that if that student continues to get that kind of support, they will have the opportunity to enjoy aquatic based activities for a lifetime! It was a moment of potential, hope and excitement. Add a comment and let us know your 'magic' moments :)

15.01.2022 What challenges have you taken on recently? Earlier this year we had @ultracoach_paul in the training room to talk about open water swimming. None of the AE team had ever really considered trying open water, it had always seemed a bit daunting. At the end of this session Marcelle took on the challenge of giving open water a go (and dragged a couple of us along for the ride ).... It has been a great experience so far but we are only a little into the journey - more on this to come... Every experience can help to give you some new perspectives. And the pictures look pretty good too #challenges #newexperiences #openwaterswimming #trysomethingnew @ Suttons Beach Pavilion

15.01.2022 Welcome to our new format of In The Training Room. We will have loads of different topics covered and this format gives us some more flexibility in that. We would love for you to still ask questions! You can post them on this video or message us directly... it is great to get others ideas & opinions. This session is all about understanding the environment and how our bodies interact with it. This knowledge is fundamental to achieving better outcomes for everyone in the w...ater. As teachers we always aim to help develop an understanding of what and why things happen. There will be more detailed content to follow this up that dives into more detail and most importantly how the concepts impact us in real world applications.

07.01.2022 Today we have a quick look at the Butterfly drill - Single, single, double... This can be a great drill for swimmers just getting the feel and rhythm of fly. A couple of notes to making it work: keep it short! Only work on short distance and aim for small improvements over the repetitions don’t worry to much if things (especially the kick) is a little sloppy the first time through. Remember it is a learning process & our aim is to improve. ... remember it is a fly drill, not a free drill! One of the biggest problems with single arm fly work is the recovery missing the mark. finally have a go at it. Feel what works or might be a challenge for students Thanks to Max for this one!

01.01.2022 This weeks topic for the training room is streamlining. We take a look at the concept of a single idea of what a streamline is and recontextualise so that we can seperate passive streamline (used in starts and off the wall for turns) and active streamline (the ability to maintain an efficient body position as moving through stages of a stroke). We revisit part of a previous In The Training Room session where Kirsten from SWIMNASTICS takes us through a dryland activity that... focuses on building connection and give you some ideas to take away and discuss with your team and co workers. FEEDBACK is awesome and we would love to hear from you! Add comments and let us know what you would like more of (like drill breakdowns... I have promised more :) or topics you would like covered. Also if you know someone we should interview for a Chat On Deck send us your ideas!
