19.01.2022 Number 2: Your heart is working harder just by being immersed in water. Deep water running, fast walking and swimming can all lead to a training intensity for cardiovascular exercise and can lead to improvements in aerobic capacity (Becker 2009). Hydrostatic pressure also leads to compression (Hall 1990) which may be useful for people with knee effusion or who have issues with swelling. Do you want more info? Come to our Plunge into Spring event to get up to date research ...information about aquatic exercise for strengthening, cardiovascular fitness and general well being, with some practical tips on how to start. https://www.aquaticphysioexercise.com.au/ https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/plunge-into-spring-aquatic- Contact email: [email protected] Contact phone: 0402455309 Photo by Robina Weermeijer on Unsplash

18.01.2022 Contrary to popular belief, aquatic exercise isn’t a type of exercise, it only defines a place to exercise. It is important to consider this fact when working out what types of exercise in water may be most useful for your goals. Buoyancy is the antigravity force on your body when you are immersed in water- that means you feel supported in water and there is less impact on your joints when you are exercising. At the same time the drag force of the water means it is a challeng...ing environment to move around in. This creates an ideal place to try some higher intensity aerobic exercise, particularly if you have a physical impairment or pain and find exercising difficult on land. The water’s buoyancy provides support for your joints creating a low impact way to exercise. International guidelines recommend regular aerobic and resistance exercise as a minimum and balance exercises are also recommended. We invite you to Plunge into Spring and learn more about why and how you can exercise in water. 13.01.2022 Sometimes, aquatic exercise may be too slow and too gentle to be exercising at a level that makes leg muscles stronger. Recent research from Melbourne published in an international medical journal has found that there are mixed results for improving leg strength with aquatic exercise for people with hip and knee osteoarthritis. Faster exercise or jumping in water in these studies has lower impact loads in water compared to on land and could also be further explored for power... training. Do you want more info? 07.01.2022 Water provides the variety needed to challenge you in your exercise routine. We all know that humans need to move to stay healthy and strong. And your body adapts to the challenges you give it, so incorporating some variety in the types of exercise you do is important to keep challenging your body and get the most our of your routine. It is particularly important to continue to exercise if you have a health condition such as arthritis. Therefore all International Guidelines r...ecommend exercise as a key strategy to manage arthritis and other chronic conditions. When is it appropriate to do aquatic exercise? The American College of Rheumatology highly recommends both aquatic and land based exercise for people with hip and knee osteoarthritis. Aquatic exercise has long been associated with a gentle place to get moving and this strategy could work well for some. They advise that aquatic exercise may be a good place to start exercising with the aim to transition to land based exercise as leg strength improves. Can people with arthritis get similar results exercising in water as for exercising on land? Yes, there is research to show that exercising twice a week in the water or on land over six to twelve weeks shows similar improvements in pain, walking and balance. Importantly, personal preference for exercise environment will play a big part in outcomes. Any exercise is good exercise. This October we invite you to Plunge into Spring to learn more about why and how you can exercise in water.
