25.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week. We would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land, the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains, on which our college is situated, and pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging.

25.01.2022 Please feel free to share:

25.01.2022 Aquinas is Shaving and Walking Outreach was front-and-centre in early August with two events that gave students the opportunity to raise some significant funds for charity. Wednesday evening, 5 August, saw most of the College brave a cool night on the Gleeson Lawn for the Worlds Greatest Shave. This had been postponed from last semester.... Over the two hours, there was no shortage of bold volunteers willing to have their heads shaved, chests waxed, and hair dyed. Enthusiastic hosts Bailey Marzola and Gemma Pollard created a lively atmosphere among the crowd and inspired some generous sponsorship. The result? A collection of rude hairstyles and almost $3,000 raised for Leukemia research. Two mornings later, a majority of the College was up at dawn to take part in the annual Walk a Mile in my Boots in support of the Hutt Street Centre and homelessness in Adelaide. With the central event not held this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, Aquinas students split into House groups and mapped out different mile-length routes around North Adelaide. Almost $1500 was raised. Outreach Coordinator, Hannah Manning, was delighted with the response over the two events. Supporting Outreach initiatives is an important part of who we are here at Aquinas, said Hannah. After not being able to do as much as usual last semester, it was great to see how many got around these two worthy causes. Hannah said that the next group event would be the annual winter sleep-out later in the month. This was aimed at raising awareness of the plight of people who sleep rough on the streets of Adelaide and is also associated with the Hutt Street Centre. This is always another well-supported event for us at Aquinas, and we look forward to the same in 2020, said Hannah.

24.01.2022 COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT The Wolf Patch was imagined by a group of students who wanted to "get on the tools" and build something. They came up with a few ideas but a garden seemed the most viable option. In consultation with David, our Groundsman, the plans went into full swing. Students sourced free wooden pallets and set to work. Plans were drawn up and a crew was recruited. From ideas to planting, the project took about 10 days to complete. Now we just have to wait for the... veggies to grow. We've certainly had no shortage of rain to keep The Wolf Patch hydrated. Students are welcome to potter and garden as they choose.

24.01.2022 Mad-hatters Tea Party Students and staff enjoyed a fancy afternoon tea to finish off the week. Thanks to everyone who baked!

19.01.2022 From all the staff at Aquinas, we wish everyone a very merry Christmas and happy New Year. The office will close at 5pm, Friday 20th December and reopen again at 8:30am on Monday 6th January 2020. We look forward to welcoming many new students and families in 2020 and of course, welcoming back our returning students.

19.01.2022 Making the most of a beautiful sunny morning in Adelaide. Spike Ball with friends; even Murphy had a go! #MyMorningsMatter #bepartofthewolfpack

19.01.2022 The fun side of staying at home - themed dress up days, because we can. Today is Tradie Day. Yesterday was Business attire (yes, our students wore suits to study) and Tuesday was Footy Day. All in the name of fun! #sociallydistancedofcourse

18.01.2022 New Lucey Centre Opened The College’s new centre for learning and study, named for distinguished alumnus Dr Shane Lucey, was formally opened on Friday afternoon, 11th September. Officiating at the ceremony were the Archbishop of Adelaide, the Most Reverend Patrick O’Regan, and the Provincial Superior of the Marist Brothers, Brother Peter Carroll fms.... They were joined in the College Chapel by about 50 invited guests along with the students and staff of Aquinas. The occasion was also used to dedicate the refurbished Chapel to the patronage of St Thomas Aquinas. Henceforth, it will be known as the ‘Chapel of St Thomas’. A linking theme of each of the three addresses given at the ceremony was the coincidence of dedicating the two spaces one for the pursuit of knowledge and the other for prayer and worship. Thomas Aquinas was both a philosopher and theologian who fostered the dialogue between faith and reason, something that continues to underpin Aquinas College. Special guests included the Director of Catholic Education, Dr Neil McGoran, and members of the Jesuit, Dominican, Marist and Josephite communities, each of which has played a significant role in the seventy-year history of Aquinas College. Particularly honoured were Dr Shane Lucey who was present with members of his family, along with others after whom tutorial rooms in the Centre have been named: Hon. Rob Kerin, Hon. Justice Kevin Duggan AM, Sister Margaret Kenny RSJ, and Professor Elizabeth Leane. Drinks and canapés followed on the Chapel Lawns, allowing students to meet with this impressive group of people and others who have helped to shape the identity and heritage of Aquinas College.

17.01.2022 FLASHBACK FRIDAY - 2009 The exact moment it was announced we had won the HTC Swimming Carnival. #alwaysaquinas #bepartofthewolfpack

17.01.2022 STATIONS OF THE CROSS Today, Good Friday, is the day Christian's around the world reflect on Jesus as he embarks on his final journey. For students still at college, our Ministry Team built and decorated 14 crosses, which were placed around the Gleeson Lawns, to represent the stations of the cross. With a booklet as their guide, they had an overview of each station, they walked the journey in pairs, and reflected on what it means and how it relates to them in our modern s...ociety. The painting of the crosses and the writing of the booklet were a wonderful community effort - thanks to all involved. A morning tea of Hot Cross Buns was a lovely way to finish the journey and be together.

17.01.2022 Great Aquinas Bake Off 2020! Some amazing decorating skills were on show this evening. 16.01.2022 Today is R U OK? Day Aquinians decided to #chalkaboutmentalhealth to kill the stigma around mental health and suicide. On such a beautiful sunny day, we took the opportunity to support each other and start a conversation. #ruokday #alwaysaquinas

15.01.2022 Good evening. Just a few words about COVID-19, or the 'coronavirus', and how it may impact us here at Aquinas. While the weeks and months ahead are not at all certain, it does seem inevitable that the virus will spread widely here in Adelaide relatively soon, as it will everywhere, and it will impact our life at Aquinas. ... It would be surprising if it didnt affect us significantly. We continue to receive advice from various governmental and medical authorities, and we will act in accordance with this advice. The fluidity of the situation makes it difficult to plan very far in advance, but we are staying in contact with the relevant bodies, and with our colleagues in equivalent situations. In the immediate term, we are encouraging our students and staff to be conscious of basic but very important precautions: 1. Washing or disinfecting our hands. Often. More than often. Using the sanitisers on coming into the Dining Room before we pick up the serving spoons and serving tongs that are shared among people. 2. Covering our mouths when coughing or sneezing. Then washing our hands before touching anything that others will touch, e.g. door handles. 3. Avoidance of touching your face and eyes as much as possible. It is possible that there may be some suspension of on-campus university classes, but no decision has been taken. It is also possible that either the State or Federal Government may put a limit on large gatherings of people. We will have to wait and see. I attach a short article which is as good as any in giving you an overview. A longer version of it can be viewed on this YouTube clip: https://youtu.be/RcWkCztUxoc

14.01.2022 2020 ASSASSINS Over the last week students at College have taken part in a mass game of Assassins. With 44 starters, the numbers very quickly reduced. The idea of being assassinated by an unknown sniper with a pair of socks, was an anxiety too great for some. 39 hours in, we were down to 15 survivors. As the hours ticked on, those remaining were watching their back, while trying to assassinate others. After much strategy and many kills over 6 days, Jack Dickeson has been declared the 2020 Assassin Champion. Well played Jack! Huge shout out to Tahlia Cua for organising the event and providing daily updates.

14.01.2022 Who doesnt love an Easter Egg Hunt? This morning members of the Leadership Group got up early to hide hundreds of Easter Eggs around the gardens for our students to find. They were surprised to see that the Easter Bunny had already been before them, leaving his tracks around the campus. A wonderful morning of togetherness (although socially distanced) for the many who have remained at College over Easter. Photo credit: Grace Franco

12.01.2022 Today we farewell Ellen, who has been part of our House Keeping Team for the last 2 years. We are going to miss her greatly; she is a happy, funny, reliable and kind member of our staff team and the students particularly love her. Ellen is moving on to study and run her own business and we wish her every success.

12.01.2022 The staff at Aquinas have had beautiful music throughout the week with the Federation of Australasian Mandolin Ensemble residing and rehearsing for their public concert, to be held on Saturday 11th January at St Peter's Cathedral, North Adelaide. Follow their page for more information.

10.01.2022 With Flu season ahead of us (as if COVID isnt enough), students lined up for their annual flu vaccination today. All very brave. Thanks to Liam and Morgan for agreeing to be photographed. Photo credit: Steph Hamra

10.01.2022 COVID may have slowed our year, but students got onboard "The May 50K" to raise funds for MS. Collectively the students ran or walked 7,488km and raised a whopping $12,839. An awesome effort all round! #alwaysaquinas #bepartofthewolfpack

09.01.2022 Murphy visited the students at College on Tuesday, lifting sprits and playing soccer. Pet therapy at its best.

08.01.2022 Yesterday, our College family gathered to remember and celebrate Rosie Pike, a much loved Aquinian. We were joined by Rosies immediate and extended family, and many friends who had travelled for the occasion. We shared stories about Rosie, we shed some tears and we had a few laughs. Together we planted a tree, a Crab Apple, that will blossom right around the time of Rosies birthday, and we unveiled a beautiful rose gold plaque that will sit by her tree. We miss you every day Rosie. Forever in the Aquinas Heart.

08.01.2022 Aquinas and COVID-19 Aquinas College is following three lines of action in its management of the impact of COVID-19. 1. Protocols for prudent management of the Colleges resident community... Since it is the students place of residence, the College intends to remain open. To do this responsibly, it has implemented a raft of measures to ensure hygienic practices, social distancing, and control of visitors. These are aimed at impeding the spread of the virus in the Aquinas community, and responding appropriately if or when residents develop possible symptoms. Students have been fully briefed on these arrangements. It is anticipated that these will continue to be developed as the virus spreads. The College is in regular receipt of advice from statutory and medical authorities. 2. Expansion of academic support As most courses in the three universities move to online delivery, Aquinas is expanding its own tutorial and general academic support for students. This is seen as the main benefit of being in college at this time. Students will be helped to adjust to online courses, and provided with tutoring, peer assistance, routine, structure, high-speed internet, study spaces, incentives, and professional oversight. In fact, the College has accepted some new applications from university students who are struggling in non-college environments. 3. Pastoral care and community Aquinas is known for the strength of its community and the quality of its pastoral care. As social and sporting opportunities for young people disappear during this period, the collegiate environment offers students an environment replete with friends, activity and connection. The Student Club, the House Coordinators, and individual students are being inventive in developing ways for students to be physically and socially active. The professional staff and senior students continue to ensure that the needs of each student are known and that they receive all the support they need.

07.01.2022 Aquinas College will be open for physical tours over the weekend! 9am-4pm both Saturday and Sunday. No bookings required.

07.01.2022 Huge congratulations to both the men's and women's netball teams for taking away wins in their respective grand finals last Thursday evening. It was great to see HTC sport back on the calendar after having the first semester off. A fantastic crowd helped get our teams across the line and we are now sitting only 2 points away from 1st on the High Table Cup leader board. #alwaysaquinas #bepartofthewolfpack

06.01.2022 Valetants Honoured As always, the Valete evening was a highlight of the academic year. With a high number of Valetants this year, the night was even bigger than usual. The whole College first gathered at 5.30pm in Christ Church with the College faculty, members of Council, and the parents of the Valetants, for the Valete Service. During the Service, the Valedictory Address was given by Daniel Puckridge who focussed on the importance of a sense of family in the dynamics of C...ollege life. Before the final blessing at the end of the service, the leadership of the College was ritually handed over from the leadership group of 2019 to those appointed for 2020. Following the service, people gathered on the Gleeson Lawn for the annual College photo and pre-dinner drinks, before entering a transformed David Hogarth Dining Room for the Dinner. During the Dinner, each Valetant was honoured with a few words from a fellow-student and presented with both a Certificate of Valediction and an engraved College plaque. In his toast to the College, outgoing President Fletcher Thomas, spoke with passion and gratitude for all that Aquinas had been for him and his fellow-Valetants. By way of reply, the Rector drew on the inspiration of Siya Kolisi to speak to the purposes of Aquinas. The evening concluded with warm appreciation to Student Club Secretary, Makayla Siegert, and College Registrar, Stephanie Hamra, who had organised the evening, and to all who had helped.
