18.01.2022 BEIRUT NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT We are heartened by and grateful to the numerous organisations and people wanting to know how they can best support the people of #Beirut. As you can see in the news and social media, the devastation is deep and the need is great and the people of Beirut require our urgent as well as our long term support.... To ensure that donations raised through our organisation reach all the people in need, we have been working to resolve the best way of donating locally and hope to have this finalised in the next few days. In the meantime, we recommend to those of you who wish to make an immediate donation to do so through the Lebanese Red Cross Thank you for your support and patience. We will update this post as soon as the local appeal becomes available.

16.01.2022 Friends We thought 2019 was a big year. Little did we know! We started with the worst bushfire season on record and this was only but a precursor to the raging events that were soon to follow: the pandemic, the atrocious events that led to the groundswell of voices demanding justice and racial equality around the world and here in Australia; and of course, the explosion in Beirut that shook us to the very core. There was more; so much more that made 2020 the year it was; on...e that will endure vividly in our memory; globally, locally and personally. Throughout the events that raged on this year, there were still panoplies of moments that have inspired us and recharged our hopes for a safer and better future. From the way we came together to keep everyone safe during the pandemic, to the way we rallied around the world demanding justice and racial equality, to the immediate wave of support for the people in Beirut. This year, the world felt both closer and so far away. The way that we think about family and community, and the way that we connect with each other and the wider world has undergone a seismic shift. But one thing was clear it was the connections that kept us all going. My warmest wishes to all of you who have been part of our life these past twelve months albeit virtually. Thank you for being there for Council and for each other. Your support has meant a great deal; it has enriched our work and sustained us when it got tough. We look forward to continuing our collaborations with you all organisations, allies, members and friends. On behalf of the board, staff, volunteers and all of us here, I wish you and yours a memorable and safe summer and festive season. Signing off as always - with hope for justice, dignity, greater courage, passion and compassion for today and for all the tomorrows. May we keep dreaming and believing that anything good is possible. Warmly Randa Kattan CEO Arab Council Australia

11.01.2022 With Arab Theatre Studio we are remembering and honouring Beirut today as it has been 40 days since the catastrophic explosion on 4th August at Beirut Port that devastated the city leaving more than 220 people dead, more than 6500 injured and more than 300,000 homeless. The 40th day after death, al arbaeen, has strong cultural significance in Arab cultures. It is a day of sacred remembrance and ritual. The people of Beirut will continue to need ongoing support.
