23.01.2022 Greediness Are we talking I wanna be a millionaire greed or Ill eat a third slice of cake greed? While we cannot be sure to what extent greediness would have you locked away in an insane asylum, we are 100% sure that this is an insane reason to be labelled crazy. ... Were all a little greedy at times. You didnt have to eat the last biscuit or purchase those pretty kitten heels that you already have 3 pairs of, but that doesnt stop you. You want that last biscuit. You want those pretty kitten heels. Who can stop me, you ask. Well, in the 19th century theres a good chance you would have landed in an insane asylum if you were caught doing those two things. Okay, so maybe were not entirely sure how greedy you had to be in order to be labelled crazy but the fact that greediness is seen as a sign of insanity is not exactly comforting, is it?
23.01.2022 From Heidi Tresize: Hi there guys, Myself and my partner did your ghost tour around July last year and absolutely loved it. My partner is not a believer but after your tour, his mind has been changed!!... Check out this picture I captured,to me looks like a little girl. Kind regards Heidi
23.01.2022 Laziness If youre lazy, youre crazy literally. Well, thats if you lived in the 19th century, of course. Back then, people were sent away to an insane asylum if they showed signs of laziness. Were not exactly sure what those signs were and what exactly defined laziness back then. Either way, sending someone away just because they cant be bothered to wash the dishes or do laundry isnt exactly normal, is it? We all get our lazy days. Some days we feel more productive ...while other days we just want to stay in bed all day and watch reruns of Friends. Sometimes were all set to go to the gym while other days it seems almost impossible to muster up the energy to lift a leg, let alone free weights. Does that make us crazy? Absolutely not! You kind of feel lucky you live in the 21st century, dont you? Freedom!
22.01.2022 Epileptic Fits Yet another insane reason people wound up in an insane asylum is epilepsy. Like with the asthma case, it wasnt specifically for the fits themselves but for the fact that they were a symptom of mental instability in those times, of course. Its hard to believe what youd be put away for in those times. ... Epileptic fits are still greatly misunderstood, for the most part. What we know for sure, however, is that there is no link between epileptic fits and insanity. In other words, there is no reason to believe that a person who experiences epileptic fits should wound up in a mental institution. Yet in the 19th century it seemed perfectly normal to get institutionalized for having epileptic seizures. Its really heartbreaking when you think about it, isnt it? And totally crazy! Fortunately, that doesnt happen anymore, and were incredibly grateful it doesnt, thats for sure.
22.01.2022 The Spanish Flu The unprecedented carnage of World War I accounted for some 20 million deaths between 1914 and 1918, leaving the world in a state of shock unlike anything seen before. But as the war was ending, another global cataclysm was underway. And though the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 may not be as widely known, it killed perhaps three times the amount of people that the Great War ever did. The H1N1 influenza known as the Spanish flu swept the globe throughout 1918 an...d ultimately affected more than one-fourth of the worlds population. It spread to the farthest reaches of the planet -- from the Arctic to the remote islands of the Pacific -- and claimed upwards of 50 million lives worldwide (though some say as many as 100 million). By the time the worst of it ended in late 1918, it was the worst outbreak of its kind in human history. Nevertheless, experts still arent clear on exactly why the Spanish flu was especially deadly or even where it first started. What we do know is that World War I only exacerbated the spread and mortality of the disease, though world leaders tried to downplay the flus effects in their own countries in order to not seem weak during wartime. But after the war ended and in the decades since, the true history that came to light about the Spanish flu pandemic indeed showed what a historic tragedy it truly was.

18.01.2022 The scariest ghosts on film
17.01.2022 From Simone Q. Hi guys, Heres a photo of one of the ghosts that I met while visiting Aradale.... I spoke to him in the room to his left in the staff accommodation block, and he followed me out into the hall. He said his name was Ben and was one of the head doctors there. He seemed to enjoy showing us around and I believe he connected with the two girls that went into the same room after us as their story was quite similar to ours. Cheers, Simone. R, Sydney NSW.
17.01.2022 I had a great Aradale experience last night (Saturday 14 November). In my group of three, I had one male sceptic. First, he freaked out in the Hex with the dowsing rods and dropped them, then he freaked out in the chapel as he was sitting alone at the back of the room when he got a firm grasp on the shoulder. Then he was too scared to move to the ground floor of the women's or matrons areas. And then by the staff room he had one more "incident" and I had to run him to the i...nfirmary, so he could throw up and splash some water on his face. I took him into the surgery to see if he could pull himself together as he was really embarrassed, but he couldn't reduce his anxiety. I was beginning to think this young man might have a heart attack or some other medical episode. He and his group had to leave the facility as he couldn't face the rest of the asylum. As he stepped out the gate he said he felt fine, but gave the "no f**king way" to his mum and sister when they said, "Cool, we can go back in then". All have vowed to return to Aradale. www.eerietours.com.au

15.01.2022 Superstition If youre the kind of person who dreads Friday the 13th, avoids walking under ladders, and picks up every penny in sight, you dont have to worry. Now you are safe. But if you had those supernatural beliefs back in the 19th century, youd have found yourself in an insane asylum. Thats because superstition was pretty much synonymous with insanity. In other words, if you were a superstitious person, you were also a crazy person. It makes sense, to an extent and... by that we mean, in some ways, it can seem crazy to believe in the unknown. Nevertheless, it doesnt mean theres anything wrong with that. You are free to believe in what you like. All were saying is that if you were caught picking up pennies or crossing your fingers in the 19th century, you would not have been seen as normal. You would have been labelled crazy.

08.01.2022 Asthma Who knew that having asthma in the 19th century would land you in an asylum? Its insane! Asthma is a common condition that many people suffer from in this day and age. Its ridiculous that people were labelled crazy back then for having it. However, its not as bad as it sounds, according to sources. It wasnt that people were sent away specifically for having asthma. It was considered more of a symptom of mental instability. You know how people claim that watching... violent movies or playing violent video games could lead to a person committing violent crimes? Well, thats kind of how it worked with asthma. Healthcare professionals believed that having asthma could lead to mental problems. Obviously, they were wrong. Asthma and mental instability are, by no means, related. Our hearts go out to those poor asthma sufferers in the 19th century, they really do.

06.01.2022 Ill Treatment By Husband Now this one is just plain insane, honestly. Should it not be the other way round? If the husband has mistreated his wife, shouldnt it be him admitted to an insane asylum? Maybe now, but certainly not then. In the 19th century it appears that if your husband treated you badly, it would in fact be you that would be admitted to a mental institute. How unfair is that!? We have no idea why that is but our guess is that healthcare professionals presume y...ou havent been a good wife and maybe that is a symptom of mental instability. Yes, its crazy but all of these reasons are insane. Or perhaps it could be that if you are mistreated by your husband, you are left mentally unstable. What do you think? Maybe specialists thought that ill-treatment by a husband would lead to mental issues. Nevertheless, its crazy!
06.01.2022 Bad Whisky What could they possibly mean by bad whisky? Were not sure whether the patient made bad whisky, sold bad whisky or drank bad whisky but regardless of the reason, we feel for the poor patient who wound up in a lunatic asylum for bad whisky. Living in a place like the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane is bound to sober you up fast and it would definitely be the kind of place that would get your taste buds yearning for a whisky. ... You might have thought the reasons so far have been ridiculous and completely insane, but this one really bites the biscuit. Weve never heard anything like it.

04.01.2022 Novel Reading Remember how we told you that you wouldnt want to have been caught reading a novel in the 19th century? Heres why: novel reading denoted craziness. Thats right! If you were caught reading a novel in the 19th century, you would be admitted to an insane asylum. Maybe people thought you were crazy for reading something of a fantasy nature, something that wasnt factual. Thats the only logical reason, if thats what you can call it, we have for this ridiculous ...reason for admission. Can you imagine innocently skimming the pages of a Nicholas Sparks novel only to captured and sent away to an insane asylum? Its hard to imagine. Novel reading is so common these days; it seems crazy that youd be locked away for doing it. Especially if you were reading, say, something as innocent as The Notebook. How could anybody lock you away for that?
04.01.2022 This is a very interesting photo. Is it real? We think so. What do you think and how did you feel when you first saw it? If you have any spooky photos you want to see on our Facebook page, please email them to [email protected] and we will post them. Thank you.
04.01.2022 Jealousy Were all guilty of feeling a little jealous at times. None of us are perfect. Its normal to feel pangs of jealousy. Whether its because your friend bought a new car when you still havent found the funds to take driving lessons or your sibling got married when youre still single, or whatever, weve all been a little green with envy at times, even if we dont mean to. Sometimes you cant help but wish you had it too. ... What isnt normal, however, is being sent to an insane asylum for feeling those pangs of jealousy. That is nothing less than insane itself. Yet thats exactly what they did to you in the 19th century. Jealousy, it seemed, was synonymous with insanity. Clearly it was wise to keep your envy under wraps two centuries ago if you wanted to steer clear of an insane asylum.
