19.01.2022 Green plum (Buchanania obovata) is ready to eat before the wet season starts. It has many names - it’s called Manybung in Ganalbingu, Djinba, and Mandjalpingu; Munytjut in Djambarrpuyngu and Gupapuyngu; and Birriki in Rembarrnga. The ripe soft fruit falls to the ground where it is collected for eating. In December, Ranger Rexy Djarrkadama was helping the harvest along by kicking fruit-laden trees! Cockatoos also like to eat the fruit.
19.01.2022 This afternoon at 3.10pm #NorthernTerritory time, you can tune in on radio and online to ABC Darwin to hear afternoons presenter Liz Trevaskis' interview with our women rangers. They'll be chatting about the work they do across land, sea and freshwater country and their current project searching for the native water mouse. The rangers are in #Darwin for the Territory NRM conference, so they were able to go into the ABC studios and talk to Liz face to face. Thanks Liz and #ABC for such a fun experience. #rangers #indigenousrangers #womenrangers #ASRAC #country #culture #land #sea #freshwater #fire #landmanagement #naturalresourcemanagement #biodiversity #caringforcountry #species #plants #animals #nature #ramingining #arafuraswamp

19.01.2022 NEW DOG DISEASE ALERT! Is your dog unwell? Does it have a fever, is tired, not eating well and is skinny, have cloudy blue eyes, runny, mucky eyes and nose, or ...is bleeding from the nose, eyes or gums? If so, they may have a new disease called ehrlichiosis (say AIR-LIK-EE-O-SIS), which is spread by Brown Dog Ticks. Ehrlichiosis has been found in Bulman and Gove and may now be in Ramingining. Dogs can die from this disease and rangers have had reports of four healthy dogs that have died suddenly without any injuries. They could have been infected with ehrlichiosis. What should you do? If your dog has symptoms - particularly bleeding from the nose, eyes or gums - or dies suddenly, please let rangers know. Check your dogs every day for ticks. Give your dog regular tick treatment. Don’t take your sick dog to other communities Can people get sick? Sick dogs do not transmit this disease to people. In rare cases, ticks may infect people. If you get sick after being bitten by a tick, go to the medical clinic. Please let rangers know as soon as possible if your dog has symptoms or dies suddenly!

10.01.2022 It’s been a big feral buffalo week for Learning on Country Program students at Ramingining School. Buffalo in Gurruwiling (the Arafura Swamp) provide an economic opportunity but damage the environment they accelerate saltwater intrusion into freshwater areas and damage lowland rainforests, many of which have high cultural, as well as conservation significance.

09.01.2022 Well done to the fellas for responding very quickly to a number of late season wildfires late last week caused by a lightening storm last week. Mother nature was on our side and the rain mostly put the fires out overnight, which meant we just needed to mop up the fires. While monitoring the fires in the helicopter, we noticed someone had lit a new fire on the Central Arnhem Hwy and we were able to put it out while the fire was small. Big thanks to the Mimal Rangers for lending a hand and for having us a Barrapunta.
08.01.2022 This Dipina (caterpillar) was brought to the ranger base by an Elder for identification. It's a larvae for a Tailed emperor butterfly, Polyura sempronius. These caterpillars munch on Acacia and Kurrajong trees. What's in your backyard?

06.01.2022 Great news for Gurruwiling (the Arafura Swamp)!! ASRAC has received funding from the NT Aboriginal Ranger Grants Program to control Mimosa pigra. Gurruwiling is a Wetland of National Importance and the largest paperbark swamp in Australia. It is under threat from Mimosa, which forms dense, thorny, impenetrable thickets, devastating wetlands and threatening livelihoods and culture. Rangers have moved quickly, treating all known infestations in the swamp before wet season rains makes country impassable.
