While it’s an important part of their ...job to consider and investigate nasty infectious diseases like Vibriosis, Pestivirus, Leptospirosis and Trichomoniasis, another common cause of calf losses, especially this season is lazy calving syndrome. This situation classically occurs in winter when calving cows are grazing green pick or cows grazing cereal crops. The underlying chemical reason for this mineral imbalance is that all that lush green feed contains high amounts of potassium, and not very much sodium. The trick is to feed a lick that contains sodium, magnesium and calcium to your calving cows
