25.01.2022 Ever wondered how we store large textile artworks when they're on not display? Say hello to our rolled textile carousel! While we're closed the gallery team are catching up on 'house-keeping', such as rearranging some artworks to make the most of our storage spaces. 24.01.2022 Joining in #FashionFriday this week, wouldn't this silk cocktail dress be fabulous for a lockdown kitchen disco? Made by LIAT Thailand, this dress is one of the many sumptious pieces in the 'Lady Barbara Grimwade Costume Collection'. It is part of a generous donation made to the gallery in 1991 by Lady Grimwade's son Angus K. Grimwade. Image courtesy Ararat Gallery TAMA, Ararat Rural City Council and MDP Photography & Video

21.01.2022 For #FashionFriday, this dress would make a dreamy outfit for a picnic in the park this weekend! Sadly the designer is unknown, but we'd love to hear from anyone who recognises the pattern or style! Part of the Lady Barbara Grimwade Costume Collection, generously donated to the gallery in 1991 by Lady Grimwade's son Angus K. Grimwade. In the meantime, you have a few more evenings to catch our nightly window projection between 9pm and 10.30pm, until Sunday 22 November You can even see a cheeky preview of the second stop motion animation of Inga Hunter's 'Work Journal - The Old Imperium'!... 19.01.2022 ‘The Art of the Japanese Package’ was an exhibition that toured to 10 Australian and 11 New Zealand public galleries in 1979 and 1980. The touring exhibition comprised 221 objects of traditional Japanese packaging which extended from ceramics, wood and paper to woven fibre containers. At the conclusion of the tour, The Japan Foundation and the Crafts Board of the Australia Council donated the vast majority of the exhibition to the Ararat Gallery for its permanent collection. This intriguing bamboo container would have been used to package salmon-trout sushi from Toyama City! Image courtesy Ararat Gallery TAMA, Ararat Rural City Council and MDP Photography & Video

18.01.2022 We received some incredibily exciting mail last week...artist Inga Hunter has very generously gifted a second Work Journal to the gallery! Documenting the development of her series, 'Miniature Robes from the Archives of the Imperium - 1986-1989', this book is a treasure trove of hand-written notes on the civilisation that Inga imagined, photos of her studio in the 1980s and tests of materials for the artworks. We are immensely grateful to Inga for entrusting this record of her creative process to the gallery. We have plans to share the contents online, watch this space! 17.01.2022 In collaboration with the Ararat Town Hall, the gallery team has been working innovatively to ensure our prized collection can be seen by the public while COVID-19 restrictions are still in place! Highlights of the TAMA Collection will be projected in the Gallery’s foyer window on Vincent Street 7 nights a week, between 7-9pm, allowing the community to continue engaging with the gallery. The current selection of images showcases a snapshot of TAMA's sub-collections, including the Lady Barbara Grimwade Costume Collection, the Art of the Japanese Package, Lionel Lindsay prints and the Frances Burke Collection. 14.01.2022 One of the more mysterious artworks in the TAMA Collection, this small oil painting was discovered hidden above an office in the gallery in 1993! Painted by Violet Teague (21 February 1872 30 September 1951), 'A Following Wind' most likely captures a scene from Violet's voyage on the CB Pederson, which left Australia in June 1935 and reached Gothenburg eight months later. Violet was an Australian artist, noted for her painting and printmaking and is identified as one of Australia's first female art critics! 12.01.2022 We are so excited to be preparing to welcome visitors back to the gallery soon! Many thanks to MDP Photography & Video for their immense patience on this project! The artist, Ararat Gallery TAMA, Ararat Rural City Council and MDP Photography & Video
