23.01.2022 Race 6 // T.M. ‘Murray’ Slattery Willaura Cup 4:30pm T.M ‘Murray’ Slattery was born into a family steeped in horse racing tradition and it wasn’t long before he was involved as a regular racegoer and later as an owner in various voluntary administrative positions, with the Willaura and Warrnambool Racing Clubs.... Murray raced horses for many years with modest success, but being a passionate jumps supporter, he had a lot of satisfaction in being a part owner of the legendary Warrnambool trained jumper, Galleywood. Murray with his long time friend Hugh Gordon were joint Honorary Secretaries of the Willaura Racing Club for many years, and he had great pleasure with his uncle, Jim Slattery winning back to back Willaura Cups with Birrabang in 1955/56, trained at Lake Bolac by Fred Drever. However time was fast approaching when the smaller rural meetings were dispensed with and the Willaura Racing club reluctantly disbanded on the 8th of September 1964. The last official race meeting at Willaura was held on the 3rd of November 1957 and the impressive profit from that meeting was 755 Pounds and 15 Shillings which was donated to the Willaura War Memorial Hall. https://www.racing.com/form/2021-02-07/ararat#/

14.01.2022 MID WEEK RACING UPDATE // Return to patrons on-course After what feels like forever we are excited to confirm that we are able to welcome the return of patrons back to the track under current Tier 3 Public Event Guidelines and COVID-19 Victorian Government restrictions ... This means we can see you for our next race meet this Thursday 14th January. These guidelines mean changes to the on-course experiences and areas you will be able to access. If you wanting to attend, you will need to book online to register as you will be allocated seating. This also extends to our Members, Sponsors and Owners. We can't wait to see you back on course, please book direct at https://country.racing.com/ararat and note there is a section for Members to complete if they wish to attend.

11.01.2022 Race 5 // Bob Barr Smith 0 - 58 Handicap 3:55pm Bob Barr Smith (1921-1994) lived and farmed at Mt. William, Willaura, for most of his life. He was a Willaura Racing Club committee man after the war and later served on the Moonee Valley Racing Club committee for over 20 years, 13 years as treasurer.... His two main interests were cattle and horses. He was one of the early pioneers of the Charolais breed in Australia, founding the Mt William Charolais stud in 1968. His greatest passion was horses and racing and had much success with Don Dalgleish and Butch Power. His biggest thrill was in 1979 and 1980 when Thackeray, a gelding he bred and trained by his daughter Rhoda Handyside,won back to back Warrnambool Grand Annual Steeplechases. https://www.racing.com/form/2021-02-07/ararat#/
