24.01.2022 Early morning mists rises as sunlight reaches Mt Chinghee, viewed from the Araucaria property. Listening to kookaburras, channel billed cuckoos, brush cuckoos, pale headed rosellas and other birds.

23.01.2022 I also have a chapter in this book. I would hope that zoos of the future can go beyond ensuring no suffering and offer their animals enjoyable lives, as well as truly engaging in conservation, research and education https://www.multilingual-matters.com/page/detail/

23.01.2022 Calling all those who have been to Eagleby Wetlands on our tours (or at other times). What do you think of the government proposal to construct a major freeway through this region, passing very close to several of the lagoons?

23.01.2022 Some of our past guests will recall the birdlife at Eagleby Wetlands. What do you feel about a new, wide freeway passing through the area when it could instead be diverted a few km to one side

23.01.2022 Sunny days in spring promote butterfly activity. Here's a meadow argus . It was one of the first butterflies I learnt to identify as a child in Adelaide because of its distinctive pattern, so I was pleased when I first saw them here in Queensland as well.

22.01.2022 A visitor today found a satin bowerbird's bower in our butterfly walk. We are of course quite delighted.

22.01.2022 Lockdown has at least given me a chance to finish this, which has just been sent to the printers

21.01.2022 At the opening of the Binna Burra Bushfire Gallery today, marking the anniversary of the devastating fire that engulfed the Lodge and heritage cabins last year.

21.01.2022 Eagleby Wetlands, which most of our birdwatching guests and guests on our multi-day wildlife tours have visited with us. We're heading there tomorrow to start a fauna survey in connection with a proposed 100m-wide freeway. The freeway would only destroy part of the wetlands, but the constant noise heard from other parts is likely to be disturbing for birds and other wildlife that depend at least partly on sound to detect prey, predators, competitors, mates, young etc. Sights and sounds of a major freeway won't be enhancing its attraction for human residents and visitors either. It's one of the best birdwatching spots near Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and a very pleasant area for gentle walking, sitting and generally unwinding.

20.01.2022 Our bottlebrush (related to Eucalyptus) has been putting in a fine show this spring. Good for birds, bees and butterflies ... and our enjoyment of the colours.

19.01.2022 Happy World Tourism Day! Under lockdown, consider visiting your local ecodges, cabins, national parks and wildlife parks, and trying a local tour or two. You may be surprised at the exciting things you can learn about your local wildlife as well as enjoying a break from the city.

19.01.2022 More on bilbies

18.01.2022 I had never noticed!

18.01.2022 Visit our special seniors tours from Brisbane: Mountain Escape for Seniors Birdwatching for Beginners https://araucariaecotours.com/wordpress/?page_id=2304

17.01.2022 We have led many tours to Currawinya and talked of the efforts to save the bilby. Next year we hope to lead tours also to Charleville, which houses the Bilby Centre where bibles are bred for subsequent release, and which offers tours of the facility and presentations about the bilby, as well as great observatory (and Australia's outback is a great place to see the stars!). One of our tours will probably coincide with National Bilby Day, to show our support for their conservation.

16.01.2022 Tuesday: September 1, 2020: Philippines

15.01.2022 I wrote this for GT after talking recently on the topic at a webinar.

12.01.2022 Anyone interested in joining us on a multi-day outback tour in late March or early April 2022? We are planning to stay out longer than the usual 6 days, but no longer than 2 weeks, visit the great outback birding hotspot of Bowra near Cunnamulla and also the bilby centre and cosmos centre of Charleville, amongst other sites. Let us know ASAP so we can start narrowing down the dates, confirming accommodation venues etc. https://www.learnaboutwildlife.com/tour_outback.html

11.01.2022 We can't travel between continents at the moment to see the wonderful wildlife in each, but we can stay in touch within and between our continents both to marvel at them and also to try to reduce the many conservation threats by supporting efforts to help them and opposing inappropriate developments.

10.01.2022 Great to see the "re-birth" of the wonderful Binna Burra happening

10.01.2022 Thank you Ecotourism Australia for welcoming into your Hall of Fame. We have been running Eco-certified tours for 20 years.

08.01.2022 We have led many tours to Currawinya and talked of the efforts to save the bilby. 08.01.2022 Very dominant-looking male brush turkey and a friendly yellow robin at O'Reillys today.

07.01.2022 I have a chapter in this. It seems necessary to breed some populations in captivity to ensure their survival, and charging admission is one way of funding their care and provides opportunity for public education. How can zoos and wildlife parks of the future offer animals not just a life with minimal suffering but a life they can enjoy? I offer a few suggestions in my chapter, and chapters by other authors offer a range of topics. https://channelviewpublications.wordpress.com//the-future/

06.01.2022 We've had to cancel almost all tours since February last year, but we haven't been idle! https://araucariaecotours.com/wordpress/ See our conservation and other activities here.

05.01.2022 Thank you Ecotourism Australia

05.01.2022 At the Kooralbyn market today promoting wildlife corridors. The band struck up "Old cotton fields back home" It took me straight back to a night traveling in the Binna Burra bus. We'd walked through rainforest and Eucalyptus forest, abseiled down a cliff and climbed through a cave then hitched a ride in a milk van to Natural Bridge where we had a barbecue and walked down to see the glow worms after dark. The Binna Burra bus picked us up and we were all singing on the way back to BB That was where I first heard this song and it brings back the warm camaraderie of our weary but happy group returning after a lovely day, half a century ago!

04.01.2022 Join us at Binna Burra or by Zoom 21st October for lunch, interpretive forest walk, brief AGM (socially distancing), launch of book "Understanding Australia's W...ildlife", talk on Binna Burra's recovery from disaster and plans for the future, and a presentation and discussion on adding genuine citizen science and conservation voluntourism to businesses (especially for domestic travellers in the light of covid restrictions). https://www.wildlifetourism.org.au/wildlife-tourism-austra/ See more

04.01.2022 Araucaria Ecotours closed temporarily during Covid lockdown and then had a few bureaucratic hassles but are now open once again, and this week ran our first two birdwatching tours for the year.

04.01.2022 My new book "Understanding Australia's Wildlife is now available on Kindle . https://www.amazon.com.au/Understanding-Austr//ref=sr_1_1

04.01.2022 Enjoy the forests and wetlands of Southeast Queensland whil learning about our wildlife. We closed our tours for a while, but are functioning again in between lockdowns, including a couple of new special mid-week tours for seniors http://araucariaecotours.com/wordpress/?page_id=1282

02.01.2022 a long break from tours has given me a chance to write, including this article that appeared today https://perfectpets.com.au//wildlife-in-suburban-australia

02.01.2022 These are the trees our property and our tours were named after. They are native to our local area but related to the South American Monkey Puzze tree through our shared Gondwana heritage.

02.01.2022 Early morning at Andrew Drynan Reserve (where our campers stay. In 15 minutes I've seen and heard 14 birds species
