25.01.2022 Gummi Bear does so love a belly scratch at feed time #redneckpademelon #joey

25.01.2022 Cat attack joey... This poor little joey (now named Peta Rabbit) came into care this week after being caught and carried some distance by a cat. She has quite severe puncture wounds to the back of her neck and has been in considerable pain... not to mention being incredibly stressed. She also has limited use of one arm. Xrays confirmed no breaks, but probably pain and/or nerve damage. We are hoping she makes a full recovery. #catattack #wallaby #joey #wiresnorthernrivers

23.01.2022 The White Cedars (Melia azedarach) are putting on a spectacular display of flower this year. The scent is subtle but delicious. [read more]

23.01.2022 We are loving this Macropod poster we just purchased... created by Green Humour (http://www.greenhumour.com/). The artist, Rohan, is from India but has done a fine job capturing the essence of all these gorgeous macropod species. We now have it framed and are going to hang it in the Intensive Care room. @green_humour #macropods #cartoonart

23.01.2022 Little Cyprus is growing up quickly... we even spotted him (or her) hopping out of the pouch in a safe spot this week.... great job Cedar! #redneckwallaby #joey

22.01.2022 Abi has been using the Boblov cameras to spy on the Araucaria Sanctuary critters at night. Quite a menagerie have been popping in for a drink at one of our watering stations. We are delighted a big bandicoot has returned after little evidence of bandicoots over winter. She (we think?) is almost as big as the pademelons! And of course there are wallabies... and even a ratty. Visit our blog to see who visited!

21.01.2022 We are very excited about our new logo! It has been designed for us by Abi Andrews, who has been staying at Araucaria Sanctuary for almost a year now. Not only is she a great wildlife carer, but she also has many hidden talents as a writer and illustrator. The logo captures the essence of our sanctuary... with wallabies, gliders and our stately Hoop Pines. Thank you so much to Abi for her artistic input and her boundless assistance to us and the animals.

20.01.2022 Under attack! We’ve been under aerial attack for the last three days! The air-raid sirens have been blaring from the skies, as the squadrons fly over. Big, black, bold fighter-jets with strong flapping wings and fierce beaks. Yes.... the Black Cockatoos are in town. Sally counted 42 of them yesterday in one formation. #blackcockatoos

18.01.2022 A very beautiful find today at Araucaria Sanctuary, with a less than flattering name. This Dingy Swallowtail (Papilio anactus) was feeding on the Grevillia flowers.

17.01.2022 Lychee, Blueberry, Tangarine, Gummi Bear and Skittles ... very excited about their first day in the Primary yard. #redneckedwallaby

17.01.2022 It is a little while since we have posted a news update from Araucaria... but that is not because nothing is happening. We have been weeding, weeding weeding... The joeys are bounding... The seedlings are growing... And we are raising awareness of a potential logging threat to our nearby Bungabbee State Forest.... Read more on our news Blog....

16.01.2022 One of the hidden jobs of macropod care and release is managing and maintaining a release yard. The past 12-18 months has been really hard for many wildlife carers, with the drought really making the task of keeping grass and other plants alive and available for hungry mobs of joeys very challenging.

16.01.2022 It was a big day at Araucaria on Friday... Don and Ben spent the day (between joey feeds) putting up habitat boxes in the woodlot over the creek, while Renata and Abi spent the day cutting out and poisoning Devil's Figs - a horrid spiky weed that comes up all too readily and grows extremely quickly. Read more on our blog...

15.01.2022 Graduation day is always a mix of scary and exciting... yesterday seven joeys had their first day out in the world... five wallabies - the Twins (T1 and T2), Star, Busboy, Faye - and two pademelons - Figgy and Foxglove. They had only been out for an hour or so when the all the red-necks turned up soaking wet and covered with duck weed. Clearly someone had the bright idea of going swimming in the dam on their first day out! Sodden, and no doubt a bit cold, they asked to go back into the yard where they sat in their familiar places in the sun. Day two out in the world, and Faye already has a wet tummy - so she can't have disliked the swim too much! Abi took some great pics of their first day out. Visit our blog post for more pics.

14.01.2022 Wild boy Hoppy... exploring rugged terrain.... (well, not really - he is actually right beside the house!)

13.01.2022 Skittles, eager for his lunch feed #redneckpademelon #joey

11.01.2022 Tangerine is really getting the hang of grass and dirt munching now

09.01.2022 Mr Armistead was doing ok with his hopping until he got scared by Tumble the Pademelon, and got caught up in a bush. He can’t wait to get that heavy cast off his arm! #brokenarm #easterngreykangaroo #joey

08.01.2022 With the wonderful rain last week we managed to do some tree planting. Thanks to Abi's help we got about 25 extra trees in the ground in one afternoon - Some home-grown Silky Oaks and Hoop Pines, a couple of Bunya Pines AND some fantastic Fig trees grown and given to us by our good friend Melanie. 06.01.2022 While not native, we are enjoying the exhibitionism of the Dendrobiums... an inheritance from Renata’s parents and childhood home...

06.01.2022 This somewhat insignificant clump of native grass has been growing in a harsh environment for years. Now it has decided it is spring and has erupted with the most gorgeous sprays of flower. We haven’t known what the grass was till now, guessing only that it was a type of Lomandra. With input from our Jiggi Landcare Brainstrust we now know it is Lomandra Multiflora. #plantidentification

04.01.2022 Happy, colourful Monday joy from Citrus. #happymonday #redneckwallaby #joey

04.01.2022 Peek-a-boo... Cedar and her joey (our grand-joey) Cyprus #redneckwallaby #joey #sleepyafternoon

04.01.2022 Loving the morning buzz of bees in the Deep Yellowood (Rhodosphaera rhodanthema) #bees #deepyellowwood #spring

02.01.2022 This is Gerald (or perhaps Geraldine). He (or she) now calls Araucaria Sanctuary home. We are growing very fond of Gerald - he appears from nowhere and disappears just as quickly. He follows us in the morning and ambushes us in the afternoon. He steals the chook food - but we all agree that we prefer him to the rooster! #brushturkey #forestfriend

01.01.2022 It has been another busy week, with more arrivals. Everyone is settling in nicely in the preschool enclosure. Meet our new arrivals! .

01.01.2022 Cedar is a pretty special wallaby for us here at Araucaria Sanctuary. Cedar came to us from Cedar Point in April 2015 as a little velvet joey. Her mum had been hit by a car and was VERY smelly and bloated and little Cedar was covered in poo and stank. The first thing we did was give her a bath! Cedar was a perfect little joey, but in mid June 2015 she had a terrible accident. When hopping in the yard Renata accidentally trod on her foot. The crunch was horrible, and it was cl...ear that her foot was broken. We did our best to keep her comfortable overnight and rushed her to the vet the next morning. The xrays were concerning and our wonderful vet, Toni, was clearly skeptical about her prognosis. But we were so upset and desperate to try and save her so Cedar was bandaged up. After a month "in plaster", mostly pouch bound, Cedar's leg was remarkably healed! Her other leg, however, had swollen and took some further weeks to heal. Cedar went on to be released in December 2015. Given her time in intensive care, she was clearly very attached to us and has, since then, been a resident wallaby; wild but residing close to our house. We have watched Cedar raise many joeys now - one each year since her release! Sadly, two (Sapling and Seedling) didn't survive and were taken by pythons. Last year's joey, Pepper, is still by Cedar's side for much of the day... but to our great delight, Cedar's 2020 joey has just started popping its head out of the pouch! A big welcome to the world to little Cyprus... just one of the many grand-joeys enjoying the spring warmth at Araucaria. Visit our blog for more gooey joey pics! See more

01.01.2022 Even the chooks are fond of Hoppy!
