"The crises of 2020 bushfires and... a pandemic have amplified the possible role native foods, plants and sustainable agriculture could play in how we re-imagine our homes, schools and farms. But how many of us know what native edible plants are in our local environment, where to find them, and when and how to eat them?" See more

11.01.2022 Beautiful Australia

11.01.2022 What is an Indigenous 'scar tree' and why are they special? For hundreds of years, Indigenous Australians removed the bark from various gum trees in order to... build canoes, shields, shelters and a coolamons. This would expose the sapwood, leaving the trees to appear 'scarred' when recovering for the next generation's needs. Scar trees are physical links that connect Indigenous people to their country and culture. They also identify where Indigenous Australians lived and provide clues to other archaeological sites. The trees are now considered rare because of the effect of land clearing and bushfires, which have reduced the numbers of remaining scar trees. Today, remaining scar trees also provide safe breeding hollows for birds. Is there a specific tree that connects you to your childhood or past? by Robert Virtue #GardeningAustralia #naidocweek2020 See more
