25.01.2022 Armidale Regional Council is reminding residents of a public workshop being held in Guyra on Tuesday 12 January to discuss the future of Guyra’s closed landfill located at the Guyra Waste Transfer Station. The meeting will discuss Council’s grant application to remediate the closed landfill cell, as well as the potential upgrade of the existing facilities. The recycling centre and transfer station located on Everett Street is operational and the community can continue to acce...ss the site as normal. General waste from the Guyra area collected via the kerbside collection and dropped off at Everett Street is taken to the waterfall Way Regional Landfill. The meeting will be held at Guyra's Civic Administration Building, 158 Bradley Street from 5pm to 6.30pm. 25.01.2022 Clear visions for our region will be provided by two documents developed by Council, guided by input from the community. The Local Strategic Planning Statement was adopted last week, identifying immediate, short-term and long-term planning actions to meet community needs and protect the region’s characteristics. 25.01.2022 Monckton Aquatic Centre will be the perfect place to chill at the start of school holidays, when it hosts a School’s Out Pool Party on Saturday 19 December. Kids film favourite Frozen 2 will be screened as part of the celebration, which will also include pool inflatables, inflatable games and food vans.
25.01.2022 Council is commencing drainage work on Kempsey Road this Thursday 5 November, following recent storm events. This work has been prioritised as more rain is predicted over the coming week. The road remains closed, however, it is open to residents who are advised to travel with caution. Road restrictions remain with a weight limit of 4.3 Tonne. The road is closed to RVs, caravans and trailers.

22.01.2022 Guyra Pool staff have launched a quest for a return of the pool’s polar bears. The pool will host a meeting next Thursday (15 October) to hopefully spark the reformation of the Polar Bears Swimming Club that called Guyra Pool home. 20.01.2022 COVID-safe attendance numbers will be enforced at the Monckton Aquatic Centre in Armidale this weekend, with hot weather forecast for both days. Maximum attendance will be capped at 350 inside the aquatic centre grounds at any one time, to ensure numbers remain within required COVID restrictions. Staff will be stationed at the entrance to monitor patrons entering and leaving the centre, to ensure as many people as possible are able to access the centre’s facilities, without exceeding the COVID limit. 20.01.2022 Additional solar lighting is now in place on the Armidale cycleway, completing a $450,000 project to improve community safety along the cycleway and in the city’s central business district. Contractors have installed three additional solar lights, funded through cost savings achieved with an initial project to install 49 lights 44 from Markham Street and Niagara Street and a further five lights on the western section from Niagara Street to help improve safety for cycleway... users. The lights now in place span approximately 1.5km, with the site identified by police as the preferred location because of the high number of users on that section and police records of previous incidents. 20.01.2022 The rain we have received in recent weeks has been great and has boosted lawns and gardens across the region. Unfortunately the rain hasn't fallen into our catchment and water storage across the LGA remains at moderate levels. Residents are reminded to be mindful of their water use over the festive season and continue to adhere to Level 3 water restrictions. 19.01.2022 Smart meters for homes in the Armidale Region are being considered by Council to give water users greater control of their consumption and help manage the region’s overall water use. Council will prepare a business case for the implementation of smart metering for all residential properties connected to the Armidale and Guyra town water supplies, following a resolution at Wednesday’s Council meeting. The meeting also resolved to advise the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment that Council will seek funding for smart metering to increase the region’s water security.
18.01.2022 A peer review undertaken on the proposed development of the New England Regional Hydrotherapy Centre has exposed a considerable risk to Armidale Regional Council’s reputation and its financial capacity to construct and operate the proposed centre. At the Council Meeting held yesterday, Wednesday 25 November 2020 the Interim Administrator decided that no further action be taken in relation to the hydrotherapy centre project.
18.01.2022 Council has stepped up its support for a rail trail between Armidale and Glen Innes - and has delegated authority to its General Manager to investigate possible funding after receiving a more detailed business case for the project.

This is retrospective and applies to anyone who has returned from Brisbane to NSW from 2 January 2021. The UK variant of COVID-19 that has been confirmed in a member of the community in Queensland is highly contagious and anyone who has been in the Greater Brisbane area must be on high alert and come forward for testing if you’re concerned or have ANY symptoms at all. 17.01.2022 Following an inspection on Kempsey Road this morning, the road remains closed to the public, between Raspberry Road and Georges Creek Bridge. The road remains unstable and unsafe for vehicles to travel on.
17.01.2022 A section of Guyra’s main street will be converted to a 40kmh speed zone from the end of this month to improve pedestrian safety. Transport for NSW recently identified that the section of Bradley Street between MacKenzie Street and Ollera Street met the requirements for a ‘High Pedestrian Activity Zone’.
16.01.2022 Armidale Regional Council has commenced community consultation on three options for a Special Rate Variation (SRV) for consideration by the community from Monday 2 November until Thursday 10 December 2020. Interim Administrator Viv May endorsed the recommendation at the Council Meeting held last Wednesday 28 October to commence consultation and formally advise the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) before November 27, 2020 of Council’s intention to submit an SRV application.

15.01.2022 Fireworks will light up the sky from 9pm on Thursday 31 December for New Year's Eve celebrations. This year's fireworks have been designed to be high enough for all of Armidale to see, encouraging people to stay at home or book into a venue to watch the display. 15.01.2022 Armidale Airport will soar into another stage of its Airport Apron Expansion, with work set to begin sealing the airside parking apron next week. Armidale Regional Council is planning to do a 10 millimetre spray seal, along with completing line marking and applying fuel resistant membrane for aircraft parking bays. Once the apron expansion is complete, there will be another three aircraft parking spaces, which will significantly increase the number of flights Armidale Airport can take. 15.01.2022 From midnight tonight, everyone over the age of 12 will be required to wear a mask at all airports and on domestic commercial flights following new advice from the Federal Government. Armidale Regional Council is at the forefront of the region’s response, and is providing free disposable masks within the Armidale Regional Airport for those who forget to bring their own. We’re looking to find new homes for the timber buildings, circa 1930s, which will make way for the new Guyra Early Childhood Learning Centre earmarked for construction at the site. 13.01.2022 This year's NAIDOC Week celebrations for the Armidale region were held as a luncheon for elders today. Here’s a short video of some of the highlights. The usual Day on the Dale event held in Armidale each year to celebrate NAIDOC Week attracts large crowds, so it was put on hold in 2020 because of COVID restrictions. The elders luncheon was a way to comply with COVID social distancing requirements, while taking the opportunity to honour local Aboriginal elders. 12.01.2022 UPDATE KEMPSEY ROAD The road has been cleared at the site of a landslip between Lower Creek and Blackbird Flat. Vehicle access in now available for local residents only. The Kempsey Road still remains closed to traffic between Raspberry Road and the Georges Junction while safety improvement works are undertaken to rectify damage sustained during storm and flood events which began on 10 December 2020.... Concessions remain in place for limited access for local residents and emergency vehicles to undertake essential activities. Council road crews will be working in the area from 6am-6pm Monday to Friday under traffic control. Unimpeded access will be available to local residents outside working hours and during the following times: 9am - 9.30am 12noon - 12.30pm 3pm 3.30pm Significant delays outside of these times may be experienced. The 4.3 tonne load limit remains in place for local residents. The road condition remains poor with areas of instability and localised rock falls occurring regularly. Residents are asked to drive to the conditions, comply with the directions of traffic controllers, and exercise extreme caution when using the road. All other traffic access remains closed.

11.01.2022 UPDATE - DUMARESQ DAM WALL STRENGTHENING Contractors have commenced dewatering the dam to allow for construction work. The dam water level will be drawn down by a maximum of 2m and will be kept at the nominated level during construction.

08.01.2022 UPDATE ON DUMARESQ CREEK BRIDGE REPLACEMENT - COOKES ROAD: The replacement of the Dumaresq Creek Bridge on Cookes Road has been slightly delayed due to ongoing wet weather. Piling for the bridge foundations was on schedule, however, Council has been unable to pour concrete due to the creek's water levels being too high. It's expected the project will now be finished in May, weather permitting.

07.01.2022 Council is reminding residents to stay the course and adhere to level 3 water restrictions as temperatures climb and the Armidale region catchment misses out on much needed rainfall to top-up the water supply. The last two weeks of water usage statistics has seen a steep increase in water consumption with daily per person usage already at 180-190 litres per person per day. Our current target for level 3 restrictions is set at the NSW State average of 180 litres per person per day.

06.01.2022 Construction of the bridge on Castledoyle Road took a huge step forward this week, with the arrival and installation of the pre-fabricated decking beams. The project to replace the ageing timber bridge with a new concrete structure was funded by the Federal Government's Drought Communities Programme Extension. It removes the need for a weight limit and will improve road safety.

03.01.2022 Kempsey Road is now closed to the public until further notice due to the recent rainfall. The road is considered unsafe and should not be driven between Raspberry Road and Black Bird Flat. The road is open to essential and emergency services at this stage, however may be closed at any time. The road condition is dangerous with a number of landslips and rock falls. Council is monitoring the area and will commence recovery works as soon as the weather permits.

This important freight link has been a burr under the saddle of many motorists for years now and this latest work, supported by the State Government, will leave just 7.5km unsealed. 02.01.2022 Armidale Regional Council is applying for a grant from the NSW Government to remediate the old Guyra Landfill on Everett Street. A public meeting was held on Tuesday January 12, 2021 to inform residents of the planned works and why the rehabilitation of the site is needed, following the landfill’s closure 12 years ago. These works are necessary in order to return the land to its previous state, and to ensure the environment and the nearby catchment is not polluted. If successful with the grant, the existing Recycling and Waste Transfer Station, which remains open to the public, will also receive an upgrade. 02.01.2022 The Armidale region was burdened by the worst drought on record last year and now residents can compare water usage and dam storage levels dating back to pre-drought conditions to help in our ongoing water conservation efforts. The region’s water usage and dam level statistics are being published on Council’s website each week to showcase past and present water consumption behaviours and guide residents on our ‘new normal’ for water consumption.

01.01.2022 Armidale Regional Council would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Council’s offices, libraries and community service facilities will be closed during the festive period, from Christmas Day to 4 January. Armidale Folk Museum and Visitor Information Centre will be closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day and will operate as usual for the remainder of the Christmas holidays.... Monckton Aquatic Centre and Council’s recycling and waste facilities will only be closed on Christmas Day, while the Guyra pool will close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. 01.01.2022 UPDATE - KEMPSEY ROAD Council crews have been able to clear a rough track on the road blocked by the landslip between Lower Creek and Blackbird Flat. The area of the landslip is still extremely unstable and localised rock falls are occurring. A geo-technical engineer will assess the site this afternoon. Residents are asked to only use the road for emergencies and exercise extreme caution if traversing the road.
