22.01.2022 ~ Sleep Deprivation & The Need For Change ~ As many of you know we have had endless challenges with our little ones and sleep. After almost three years of serious sleep deprivation, generally averaging around 3 hours total sleep a night. We decided something had to change. ... Every aspect of my life was starting to be affected, my mental and overall health, my business, my relationship with my partner and my ability to be the best mum I knew I could be. I would become stricken with anxiety at the lead up to bedtime wondering how I could do another night. I have always been anti sleep training. Absolutely no judgement I just thought it wasnt for me. Until I had a conversation with @forthelove_ofsleep I had known Steph for quite some time and she knew my stance on cry it out. Every sleep consultant I had spoken to had said theres always an element of letting them cry. But Steph was different. She explained it was going to be a longer process but that wed get there in the end with minimal to no crying. She has been an amazing support. During the first month we went from contact cosleeping to the kids in their own bed in our room. Archer went from waking 3-6 times a night to only waking once or twice and for the first time ever even slept through the night a few times. Charlii on the other hand had still been quite challenging. Being assessed for allergies and having bouts of being very unwell certainly didnt help. So we started getting lazy. The 45 minute wake ups felt easier if they were back in bed with me. Dummies stockpiled under my pillow and littering the bed. Back to making multiple bottles through out the night. And just like that we are back to surviving on minimal sleep. But tonights the night. Were starting again. Today has been extremely challenging. We have taken both of their dummies away and I can assure you there has been countless tantrums and more tears shed then I could count. Its going to be tough. But we need this. This is my accountability post and Ill give you updates along the way. If you have any little tips with with sleep or the dummy Id love to here them. We had a great whole lot of plans fall through so now Im doing a big breakfast / brunch with all his favourites. Cooking is definitely not my forte so fingers crossed it tastes ok ... 20.01.2022 Congrats on the baby man ‘Yeah cheers’ Hows sleep going? ‘Shit.’... And as this conversation was relayed to me I just felt sad. Weeks old. Weeks old and already the focus on sleep, the focus on fixing. The questions geared for answers we don’t want to give because they make us sound like we’re failing. Our society is breaking. We are losing connection to our intuition. Losing confidence in our innate abilities as people, as humans, as parents to nurture and comfort and care. Our mental health rates are alarming. Our support systems are flawed. The focus is wrong. It’s money. It’s consumerism. The contents of our ‘having a baby hospital bag’ take up pages in the magazines and the contents of our ‘just had a baby’ care packages are nowhere to be seen. Headlines scream at us to bounce back, drink this, wrap ourselves in that, instead of allowing ourselves to honour the time our minds, and bodies need to heal. We have an entire industry focused on ‘fixing’ the baby, as if their primal behaviour should be adjusted for convenience. A myriad of devices designed to holding the baby because we lack the support around us to help when our arms are tired. We’re constantly bombarded with messages that undermine our worth. Undermine our capability. Erode our insight until we look everywhere but within for answers. Buy this. Buy that. And we do because if there’s a solution to buy then there must be a problem to fix. They’ve designed a fucking smart nappy. To tell you when your baby has a piss. Because our eyes and our hands and our noses aren’t up to the task. Just one more thing to obsess and worry over. One more chip at the confidence of motherhood. We’re sold a million things we don’t need for babies who only need simple things. But no one makes money from our arms so they tell us they’re not enough. But we are. We’re everything our babies need. And we need holding up. We need support. Rest. Time to bond. To find our rhythm with the new person we’ve bought into this world Congrats on the baby man ‘Yeah cheers’ You guys managing much rest? ‘Yeah nah fuck all aye We’ll bring round dinner tomorrow. 20.01.2022 ~ Mum Life Fails ~ I feel like I have had a few of these lately. So thought I would share in the hope that you can drop some of those #mumlife moments below and normalise the crazy. So Charlii has been self toilet training since around 14 months and has been going really well. Now I dont know about you but theres something amazing about freshly washed sheets. I had a huge day and was keen to snuggle into bed. When I walked into the bedroom I thought oh s**t! And yes I was... right. Charlii had left some little nuggets down my freshly cleaned sheets... Now this was definitely a silly move. But Archer had been asking to look at my rings, including my engagement ring . So I took them off and said he could have a hold. I inevitably got distracted and started cleaning. Archer turned the vacuum on and I thanked him for helping me. Sometime later I realised I hadnt gotten them back off him. Archer wheres Mummys rings? I dont know. Gone... Panic ensued I searched the entire house thinking oh man Im in some serious trouble. Hours went by and I was trying to work out how to tell Jesse that they werent lost. Just geographically misplaced. I picked up the vacuum to empty it in the bin and heard a funny rattle. Pulled it all apart and there were my rings! 15.01.2022 ~ Introducing Our Newest Artist ~ We are beyond thrilled to have Amy Hopkins join the @archer_and_i family. Born and bred in the NT I have just welcomed my first baby just 6 weeks ago. I have always loved art and all things that are creative. I love art work that triggers an emotional response and I use my experiences travelling and my passion for human rights to underpinn my art. I enjoy sketching portraits but in recent years I have begun to experiment with watercolours ...and creating bright and playful artworks. I have just started exploring the world of digital art where I have completed my first art work that will be used by in this next nappy release. I am so excited about learning more and trying different mediums through my collaboration with Archer & I. We cant wait to show you the designs weve been coming up with over the next 6 months! 15.01.2022 ~ Sweet 2020 Baby ~ I just want to say thank you. Because in many ways, this year has been a mess.... A bit of a disaster, really. But you. You’ve been the light in the darkness. The calm in the chaos. The joy in the midst of a whole lot of hardship and pain and frustration. So I know people will talk about 2020. They’ll talk about the stress and the fear and the sadness. They’ll recount every bit of the hard stuff that’s brought tears to my eyes more times than I can count. But I’m just so glad that, when I think back on this year, I also get to think about you. Because you’re such a gift. The sweetest blessing. And even though things looked a little (okaya lot) different than I’d planned, and it certainly wasn’t always easy or comfortable, your timing couldn’t have been more perfect. 13.01.2022 ~ Our Newest Darwin Artist - Margie Joy Creations ~ Margie Joy Creations, Darwin NT I am a passionate creative who enjoys creating Joyful Colorful Artworks adding Joy and color to the homes of those who purchase them.... I Paint Intuitive Abstract Art influenced by all the beauty in nature. In the last few years I have designed and printed Unique Wearable Art Clothing and Scarves, using my own original artworks and photography. My designs are reproduced onto Natural Fabrics for Clothing, Homewares and onto PUL fabric for Modern Cloth nappies and onto Greeting cards. I also enjoy drawing illustrations and Doodling. If youre finding this time trying ask for help. Sometimes just having that hard yet honest conversation about how you are really feeling will evoke others to speak their truths. Life is hard at times and it is Ok, Not to be Ok. That was me yesterday when I saw these delicious lemon sugar crepes (swipe to reveal) my Mum would make them all the time when I was a little girl. ... Well. Its the same feeling I had when I saw this gorgeous little #flowerpress and new we simply had to stock them. Did you enjoy one as a child? 08.01.2022 ~ Truthful Tuesday ~ You see that guy/girl over there that youre madly in love with? That you cant imagine your life without? Yeah. That person. Well its all about to change. See, having a baby is one of the hardest things your relationship will go through. Even the strongest of couples will have their foundations rocked to the core by this tiny all consuming little human. And not just the first time. Its the second, the third, the sixth. Theyll all change the dynamics... dramatically. Even the easiest of children. Mum undergoes all sorts of hormonal changes whilst pregnant. Your body changes. Your mind changes. Your entire being is completely taken over by this little thing moving and kicking you in the ribs. The non pregnant parent? Not so much. When they get here? One parent stays home. The other goes to work. Breastfeeding. Bottles. Sleep deprivation. Loss of self. Endless guilt. It all feeds into the massive change you and your partner are about to experience. Before you know it, you start to resent that person who gets to leave the house all day and doesnt have to deal with the crying, the tantrums, the mundane and the loneliness. But they resent you a little too, because youre SO LUCKY to get to hang out at home all day with this little creation. As you all know we had the @ausmumpreneur awards night on Wednesday and much to my absolute disbelief I placed in both categories! First - Emerging AusMumpreneur 2020 a judged category ... Second - Making A Difference - Business as voted by You / peoples choice. I am so very humbled and grateful to not only have be nominated but to have been awarded. Archer & I started completely by chance but has grown to become an amazing community of like minded families. I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to continue to grow my passion and business and to meet so many wonderful people along the way. 04.01.2022 ~ What She Thought She Knew ~ She thought she would sit in a cafe for hours while her baby napped, while she drank coffee and chatted with her friends. She thought that she would have time to keep the house tidy and the gardens immaculate while her toddler played on a mat surrounded by toys and snacks.... She thought she would prepare all meals from scratch, make packed lunches and always have frozen meals in the freezer. She thought she would be out late at night for dinner and at long lunches with her friends while her children moulded in with her life completely. She thought that she would fit into her old clothes in the same way, have time to work out on her terms and have a neat mum wardrobe filled with fashionable activewear and pearly white sneakers. She thought wrong because she didn’t know. She now knows that she can only sit in a cafe for half an hour at best before a wake, a spill, or a tantrum. She buys takeaway coffee while dining in (just in case), any food she attempts to eat is cold or shared, and any chat is short-lived. She now knows that she can garden and clean, but only when her children nap, only IF her children nap, and any self-occupation/ time on the mat is fleeting with a toddler, no matter the variety of snacks and toys. She now knows that feeding her children processed food and bought lunches is sometimes necessary and generally the only things frozen are the vegetables she puts on the side of the plate for balance. She now knows that going out late at night or for long lunches is a bad idea because naptime is the worst time to be out in a overstimulating environment with young children. She now knows that most of her pre-mum clothes are not worth keeping, workouts are never fully on her terms, and her wardrobe is largely made up of nothing white and everything comfort over style.
