22.01.2022 Something special happening in Brisbane right now for lovers of the intersection of The Book and Art: The Arlisanz Book Fair of Artist's Books. I was struck today by a number of the works: Clyde McGill's "Witness", Ana Paula Estada's "I was There" and "I cannot See You" , And the collected works of Grey Hand Press. Big shout out to my friend and colleague Suzon Fuks for her entirely original range of books created from the components of discarded computers/tablets/phones/ all things digital. Congratulations Suzon on your first Artists Book Fair Exhibition.

12.01.2022 Who doesn't love a little bit of Gorey? Edward Gorey's Epiplectic Bicycle (1994 reprint). $20.

12.01.2022 This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will simply try to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were destroyed by the war. (p.5). Erich Maria Remarque‘s All Quiet on the Western Front was reprinted 20 times in English between March and September 1929. First published in Germany late 1928 in periodical form and... in January 1929 in Book form, it sold out in Germany on release date. It was later banned and burned in Nazi Germany. This September 1929 Putbam edition is the twentieth print run in English, completing 260,000. A publishing phenomenon in its day. Lacks dustwrappet, some foxing. $30.

10.01.2022 Today's delectable book: A tidy little facsimile of the classic Savoy Cocktail Book of 1930. $45.

09.01.2022 I asked Pete to catalogue a copy of Orwell’s Road to Wigan Pier. She decided to check out the ownership signature on the fly leaf and discovered that Irving Copi was one of Bertrand Russel’s most notable students. A philosopher, logician and university text book author in his own right, there is an obituary for him on the Bertrand Russel Society website. The bookseller we acquired this from made no mention of provenance so we’re not able to say with certainty that this was his copy, but Copi was a lefty with a deep commitment to social justice. It would make sense that this title would be on his bookshelves. Coming to the website soon. #dayinthelifeofacataloguer #georgeorwell

07.01.2022 We are getting close to being able to announce when we can re-open. In the meantime, here's something unexpected: We recently gave two leaves from a 17th Century Greek New Testament to a paper conervator for stabilsing and repair. In peeling off a previous (and sadly inelegant) repair a discovery was made - the paper that had been used for the previous repair has the 'Strasburg lily' watermark. Here's what the NGA has to say about this watermark, "There are many variations o...f the 'Strasburg lily' watermark. It has also been known, more prosaically, as the Fleur-de-Lis on a Crowned Shield, or simply as the Fleur-de-Lis, (a term derived from the central element of the design). The watermark in use from 1600 through to the 19th century was not limited to papers made in Strasburg, but was also used in Basle, about 120km upstream in Switzerland. It appears widely in the Netherlands (notably in Amsterdam) and, to an extent, in England and Germany. Variations had currency in Russia and Scandinavia. Many of these places used a less florid version which preserved the basic components the crowned shield enclosing the lily. Some variations of the mark came to be associated with specific sizes of paper. In Britain the 'Strasburg lily' came to represent Demy (40 x 51cm); with a slight alteration in the crown section, the emblem signifies Imperial (standard size 56 x 76cm). The Russian version of the 'Strasburg lily' was used by mills in and near Uglich, Veliko Selo and River Yukhot. Papermaking burgeoned in Russia following the active encouragement of Peter the Great (16891725). Peter made an extended visit to western Europe early in his reign, and was intent on bringing his empire to Europe and transforming much of its medieval serf economy into an industrialised state. In 1697 Peter spent time at Zaandam in the Netherlands (see the De Erven de Blauw countermark), where he carefully investigated techniques of shipbuilding and papermaking. Thereafter he was instrumental in the establishment of paper mills at a number of centres. By the early 19th century Russian paper mills had grown into large enterprises. In 1826 the Veliko Selo paper mill employed 530 people (of whom 143 were children between six and fourteen years of age). In Denmark the pared-down version of the 'Strasburg lily' was in use in the 18th century at a paper mill at Engelsholm, near Horsens, in Jutland. The form is described by Voorn as a ‘Crowned shield with figure representing a Lily’." Here's a picture of ours. The paper is dark because it is still wet from the process. The Greek New Testament it comes from was published in Paris in 1640. We look forward to sharing more images once the conservation work is complete.
