23.01.2022 I’m amazed by the attitude and effort that Jaz has put into her weightlifting. Her results speak for themselves, as she does the work, day in, day out. Like every other normal person, she has challenges that compete with her training. But she maintains a commitment over the long term and that is where the gains are made. Straight up, weightlifting is hard. It’s a different kind of hard to other forms of strength training. The snatch and the clean & jerk look simple enough: j...ust pick a barbell up from the floor and put it overhead in either one or two movements. It is so much more than that though. There is so much that goes into training to just try to improve these two lifts. Weightlifting is mentally and emotionally demanding. It’s cruel most of the time. But every once in a while, it’ll surprise you and things will click. Those fleeting moments are worth the constant beat-downs. Jaz goes through this anguish every week, like all of Arc’s weightlifters. And she’s kicking arse at it. I’m pretty humbled to receive such a fantastic recommendation from her. Her performance is a reflection of her attitude and work ethic. I count myself lucky to be given the opportunity to coach her.

22.01.2022 Setting The Example While trying to lift when you have kids is tough, it is also really rewarding. By setting an example, kids see you undertaking physical activity as a normal thing and if you do it enough, they might maybe even want to be involved. ... My daughter isn't up for long sessions, but she does enjoy joining in and trying to replicite what I do. I cherish and capitalise on these chances to play and teach at the same time.

17.01.2022 While I love the sport of weightlifting, the head of the - *our* - international federation has been doing the dodgy for a number of years. This has only come to light this year. A consequence of allegations from a German documentary was this investigation and report, by the very same McLaren that was tasked by WADA to look into doping in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The consequences of the Sochi investigation are still alive and well. While it’s disappointing that such th...ings were occurring in the past in the IWF, it’s important to take the facts on board, improve governance, and move our sport forward. Without good governance, the sport of weightlifting will suffer. Good riddance to those that corrupt the system to their own advantage. Out with the old and in with the new. To new beginnings and hopefully some positive change in one of the the original modern Olympic sports.

14.01.2022 [Technique Tuesday] The front squat is often far more challenging for many people than the back squat. Two common errors involving the front rack position are:... 1. Many people set their elbows too low and try to hold the bar up with their upper body, with upper body strength becoming the limiting factor. 2. Others simply choke themselves with the bar. A good front rack position is critical to improving your front squat. Aim to be able to front squat 80-90% of your back squat. Is your front squat lagging? They have an issue of their heels rising signficantly during any squat variation and Russian baby makers (RBMs) were prescribed as a mobility drill at the start of each lower body session.
