07.01.2022 Does your child or a child in your care struggle to say the 'L' sound? Does your child say 'white' instead of 'light'? Does your child say 'yet' instead of 'let'? Many children struggle to say the L sound in the early speech development years, however if your child is 3-4 years old or older and STILL NOT saying the 'L' sound correctly; it is time to get started. Here are some tips to encourage your child to say the L sound:... Tip 1: Encourage your child to open his or her mouth up wide. Mr Tongue then needs to point up high behind the top front teeth. Remember, frozen lips when saying L as Mr Tongue does all of the work to make the 'L' sound. Tip 2: Model your 'tall tongue' to your child and allow them to copy your tongue movements. Tip 3: Once your child has mastered a 'tall tongue', then work on words such as 'La', 'Ligh' & 'Lee'. If your child says 'white' instead of 'light', these rhyming 'go togethers' as pictures that compare 'L' and 'W' words e.g. light / white ; lip / whip; lake / wake. Now try saying these 'L' and 'W' words as rhyming pairs! If your child says 'yet' instead of 'let', draw pictures that compare 'L' and 'Y' words e.g. let / yet; lamb / yam; lawn / yawn. Have a go saying these 'L' and 'Y' words! How can I help my child say 'yellow' !? Does your child say 'yeyo' instead of 'yellow'? This is such a tricky word for many of our children. If your child can say an accurate 'L' sound in other words but struggles to say the 'L' sound in 'yellow', then here is our tip ... First, encourage your child to say 'YEAH' with a 'thumbs up'. Then, encourage your child to say 'LOW' with a 'thumbs down' Repeat this a few times with your child saying YEAH LOW with you, then ask them to say YEAH LOW directly after you. Lots of fun and usually helps pretty quickly! Visit our Facebook page to view some videos of a mother using the above tips to help her child say 'yellow'.
