18.01.2022 For most of our lives, the rhythms of our days are governed by crystallised routines: we get up, have breakfast, go to school or work, have lunch, dinner, watch TV, go to bed. For families, weekly routines often revolve around kids’ sport or active hobbies. Then there are times in life when our routines are upended. Mostly these are life transitions like starting school or retiring. Less often, disruption stems from individual crises like sickness or job loss. Even rarer are social upheavals. The COVID pandemic is certainly one of those. But what will this mean for their long term health and fitness? Read the full article from ARENA's Tim Olds, Carol Maher and Verity Booth in The Conversation.

18.01.2022 Dementia is a condition that affects close to half a million Australians and almost 1.6 million people involved in their care. To mark Dementia Action Week and World Alzheimer’s Day, our researchers are sharing their latest insights about dementia in a new podcast series, Re-imagining Ageing. Developed in partnership with Radio Adelaide the 7-part series shares insights and research on how to live well, age well, and reduce the risk of dementia. Project lead and cognitive age...ing expert, ARENA's Dr Ashleigh Smith, says maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle is essential to help reduce the risk of dementia later in life. While there is no known cure, between 40-48% per cent dementia after the age of 65 in Australia can be potentially avoided through modifiable factors such as improved physical activity, getting enough sleep, and eating a healthy, balanced diet. 11.01.2022 Maximal handgrip strength (HGS) is a convenient and reliable, but incomplete, assessment of muscle function. Digital handgrip dynamometers and accelerometers provide unique opportunities to examine several aspects of muscle function beyond strength capacity, while also maintaining procedural ease. Evaluating muscle function with new HGS technologies and protocols may provide a more comprehensive assessment of muscle function beyond maximal strength, without sacrificing feasibility. Read ARENA's Grant Tomkinson et al., Special Article in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association, introducing a novel framework for assessing multiple attributes of muscle function with digital handgrip dynamometry, accelerometry, and refinements to current HGS protocols.
