It seems to be more on the minds of the younger generation but everyone should be paying attention to their brand. These are things that separate you from 90% of... people who don't pay any attention to their personal brand. List examples of these efforts on your LinkedIn profile, which holds a lot of power when it comes to personal branding. On the flip side, you don’t want to be blowing your own trumpet to the point that it seems insincere. There are many programs and people who can help you build your brand, like the Key Person of Influence workshop. It’s a good idea to set aside a percentage of your income every year to spend on your professional development, which in turn, builds your personal brand. Many employers think if they invest money in marketing resources to help executives build their personal brand, it won’t benefit them. They’re wrong. Some employers assume that if they do invest, it will attract headhunters and their executives will be a flight risk. But most employees are a flight risk anyway.... Employers want their executive leaders to deliver the best quality outcomes, and more often than not, that means being in the trenches doing day-to-day tactical work. But at the same time there’s a ‘war for talent’, which means attracting the best quality people. But there's got to be a commitment from the organisation in order to do that. There are a number of benefits to building personal brands, which I talk through on the Arete Executive Podcast. Your senior executives or board members might speak at a conference which results in winning a new client or customer. Likewise, your leaders are the ones who will ‘sell’ you as a good employer and who will refer future employees, potentially cutting out recruitment fees. My advice is to do the AICD directors course. You’ll find people who will tell you not to bother but I think it’s an important qualification to show your commitment and knowledge....
