20.01.2022 Steve Foster - You may have been entertained by him in the Catacombs on Hackney, the Cellar blues club or seen Steve open performing with bands like The Twiligh...ts, The Loved Ones or The Byrds. Maybe you read articles in Go-Set about INKASE, Resurrection or Black Watch. Did you see him at Myponga 71' as part of Black Fire? You might have a copy of Steve's album, 'Coming Home in a jar'. Steve devoted his life to music and his home, South Australia. Today we remember Stephen Foster, who was also an Australia Day Ambassador for the Australia Day Council. Steve passed away overnight after his cancer returned earlier this month. Amongst his many achievements was his song 'Forever Blue' recorded by Little River Band in 1986, which became a huge international hit retrospectively, peaking in several top 10's and remaining in the charts for over 12 weeks in Europe. The SA Music Hall Of Fame expresses it's deepest condolences to Steve's family, friends and fans. Vale Steve Foster. www.stevefoster.info #SteveFoster

15.01.2022 Bleak House About the Mine Hospital from The Story of the Monster Mine The Burra Burra Mine and its Townships 1845-1877 by Ian Aulh. The Directors [of the mine...} had ordered Superintendent Samuel Stocks in 1847 to find a suitable site for a hospital. The hospital was competed in 1848 but early in 1849 was rented to Peter Spargo, the engineer in charge of installing Roach’s pumping engine. Despite efforts to ‘have the hospital for the use it was intended for, ‘Spargo and his family continued to occupy it until he and his two sons were sacked in July 1850. The cottage was then handed over to the new mine doctor, Dr. Henry Chambers, for the use again as a mine hospital. It was re-equipped with ‘3 wash basins and jugs, 1 dozen tea cups and saucers and 3 night pans’ from the new mine store. The hospital was little used except as an immediate place of reception for men injured on the mine and as a morgue for victims of fatal mine accidents. Cornish miners had a strong aversion to using the mine hospital. They preferred the security of their own homes and of traditional remedies. Some children rummaging around in the deserted hospital in 1869, found the body of a newly born infant under the floor boards. Evidence showed that the body had been there for several months. It was hardly to be wondered that the isolated cottage built on the side of a bare hill became known as ‘Bleak House’. Finally in 1871 the building was let as a residence for 26 per annum and in 1872, the Directors at last permitted the building to be used as a general hospital ‘to be devoted to the purposes of the public upon the adoption of some general rule for its management’. The mine hospital was never used as public hospital. Despite a proposal for a Kooringa infirmary in 1850 and a petition to the Legislative Council in 1851 for a building grant. Burra had to live without a hospital until 1877. See more

08.01.2022 Here is the information on the green heritage plague at 2 Jessie Street, Aberdeen, Burra. The views of the house in about 1916 and in the 1930s reveal how much ...the scene has changed. George Sara junior acquired this allotment in 1879. In 1876 he and his brother William had formed a partnership with John Dunstan as builders and timber merchants at Burra North. This firm was responsible for many significant buildings in South Australia, including in Burra, St Mary's Church, the Burra School, the Bon Accord Hotel and several impressive residences. By 1881 he had erected this fashionable six roomed stone house, in which he lived with his family until selling it to the Methodist Church in 1891 as a home for the circuit minister. The church sold the premises in 1920, after which it has had many owners. See more
