22.01.2022 Buffel is now one of the worst invaders of desert ecosystems worldwide. It fuels bigger, hotter fires. It threatens native species. For Aboriginal people who use plants for bushfoods, medicines and other purposes, buffel is one of the greatest risks to food security and culture. When buffel is removed, native wildlife can bounce back. We need new, cost-effective and culturally appropriate options for controlling buffel.

21.01.2022 Tiny critters, called stygofauna, were recently discovered in groundwater aquifers earmarked for gas fracking in the NT. Join us in conversation with Professor Jenny Davis, one of the researchers behind the discovery, to learn about these intriguing creatures and what they mean for the future of water and fracking.

20.01.2022 The Morrison government's rushed attempt to change our environmental laws and devolve responsibility to states and territories has hit another roadblock. The government should get the message: we need proper environmental standards, an independent regulator and funding to properly manage and protect our remaining wildlife and their habitats.

11.01.2022 A 40,000 megalitre per year water license to grow irrigated crops - including avocados and grapes - on Singleton Station near Tennent Creek is still being considered. It would be the single largest private water licence allocation in the NT and without a water pricing regime, Fortune Agribusiness would receive this water for free. "It is beyond the pale to be giving water licences to developers and ensuring they have rights to water when there are no water rights existing with respect to safe drinking water in remote Indigenous communities," says Kirsty Howey, Co-Director Environment Centre NT.

03.01.2022 Facebook restrictions on how Australian media is shared online is impacting our ability to share important environmental news and information. Even campaign pages, community groups and grassroots activists have been silenced. Staying informed is key to environmental protection. Sign up for receive ALEC’s regular e-newsletters get updates on key issues facing Central Australia and desert communities. (NOTE: a lot of health department Facebook pages have been taken down during this time, stay safe and make sure you are going to credible websites to get your news and health information.)

03.01.2022 "Our fellow Australians are thrown under a bus when it comes to comparing what cotton and fracking have already done to communities and livelihood; let alone the environment." Territorians are talking water. The NT Government must do much more to protect our water, instead of rushing to back short-sighted proposals from big companies that put our water - and future - at risk.

02.01.2022 Special garden delivery: one giant cheque to go toward a wicking bed workshop at the new Westside Garden Big thanks to the Community Bank Alice Springs for supporting gardens and gardeners.

01.01.2022 Watch this Nine news report on the finding of 11 new species of stygofauna and proof of groundwater connectivity in the Beetaloo basin featuring CDU Professor Jenny Davis and Protect Country Alliance’s Graeme Sawyer. 90% of the Territory’s water comes from groundwater, and it’s stygofauna that keep it clean. Amazing effort by these microscopic critters. We need to do everything we can to ensure these amazing and life-sustaining creatures are better understood, so that they ca...n be listed and protected under relevant legislation. Until this crucial work is done, development proposals that might drawdown and contaminate our groundwater sources should be deferred. https://www.facebook.com/9NewsDarwin/videos/759602308011945
