25.01.2022 On tonight for anyone in Hobart :D

23.01.2022 Congratulations Dane French! Today despite 20 knot crosswinds you easily gained your retractable undercarriage endorsement in Ian Tucker's lovely Piper Arrow. Thanks also Ian and Vicki for making your aeroplane available.

21.01.2022 Flying with Craig Brooks last night for the Night VFR, we discovered the limitations of not having ADSB. It seems you cannot enter Class C airspace when the Class D towers are closed without this device. The net result was a flight from just outside Hobart "C" (clearance not available) up the coast to Bridport and then back to Devonport to remain outside Launceston "C" (can't give you a clearance to transit this airspace either). Sadly this does limit night VFR in Tasmania in summer when the towers close not long after last light unless you have one of the rare lighties with ADSB. At least we had speed, almost 200 knots ground speed from Hobart to St Helens!

21.01.2022 Being a flying instructor has some great rewards. Today I was given the privilege of a go in a Searey Amphib as part of a flight review. The Searey has always been a favourite of mine and anyone who has seen Voyage Of The Southern Sun - Launceston Cinemas will know just how capable these aircraft are. Great view outside as well and an opening canopy that when opened in flight doesn't want to blow you out of the aircraft! See also Southern Sun

02.01.2022 A trip to the accountant A year has passed since Ariel Aviation began trading at Devonport Airport and the time has arrived when I need to take a long hard look at what I have been doing and what has happened. I have arrived at a crossroads. This began with a trip to the accountant’s office to do tax stuff. Cognitive dissonance ended! The reality of what I have earned (actually lost) in the last year has became apparent! Sadly I have been subsidising Ariel aviation with my ow...n money to a big extent. For those that may be stunned at my new pricing, here is a breakdown of what I already knew, but didn’t really look at, prior to my visit to the bean counter. This is the annual cost for me to keep my qualifications and meet CASA requirements. Class 1 medical - $1500 Grade 1 instructor rating renewal (50% cost) $1000.00 Night VFR Flight review (50% cost) $1000.00 Multi engine flight review (50% cost) $1000.00 Building rent $4500.00 CASA compliance $2500.00 ASIC card $200.00 This total of $11700.00 is the annual cost of staying in this business before an aeroplane engine even gets started and it does not consider the time (read days) component required to actually do all this stuff. I am seriously considering just walking away. Then I just keep my class 2 medical and fly my Scout for fun! There will be no more CASA, no more class 1 medical expense, no more ratings renewal expence and I will have time to contemplate another (non aviation) business. Remaining in this industry does still appeal but it must 100% pay its way and pay me a wage for my time. This is not negotiable! For this to happen I need to increase the charges for almost everything I do. Some things are radically increasing. From today, the new prices are as follows: Flight review: In your aeroplane $400.00 Flight review fee in VH-FYI $300.00 + aircraft at dual rate Dual instruction VH-FYI $360.00 per hour taco (except CPL and RAA students, see below) Instructor hire $150.00 per hour, minimum charge $200.00 Ground training: $50.00 per hour, minimum $50.00 charge RPL flight test $300.00 PPL flight test $600.00 Night VFR flight test $600.00 Design feature endorsement $200.00 RPL licence endorsement $200.00 Pilots training towards their 200 hour commercial pilots licence: C172 dual: $330.00 per hour taco time Instructor hire $110.00 Design feature and RPL endorsements $110.00 Pilots converting RAA qualifications to GA qualifications C172 dual: $330.00 per hour taco time Initial flight review fee $180.00 Ariel Aviation will be available Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only at Devonport airport. Training will no longer be provided at any other airport. Night flying training will be available 7 days as weather, availability and duty times permit.
