24.01.2022 Arion Productions joint Christmas drinks with Rumour Control and our shared manager for stress relief Elodie. We’re closed now until 15 January. Have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
21.01.2022 We are deliberately a bit quiet here right now. Working on new directions.
16.01.2022 The English language is forever changing and evolving. While I dislike the reappropriation of verbs as nouns (‘the reveal’, anyone?) I love this.
11.01.2022 There's dumbing down and then dumbing down. Thanks, CNN. (Poor Jericho.)
11.01.2022 Proof reading is important! Take this little gem of a greeting card. It's by an Australian company, Koala Publishing, and is designed and printed in Australia. Australian quality control at its finest! So who's up for a drop of Bum Wine then? I'm racking my brains to think what variety has been misspelt here and I suspect it's simply a designer getting away with a joke that nobody else has picked up. Maybe he or she doesn't like wine but thought wine names were a great idea ...for a greeting card. Then there's Spumate. I think I shall trademark that name. I'm going to design a drink you ask for when you swallow an oyster and realise at that very instant it was 'off'. "Waiter, a glass of Spumate, quick! I need to spew, mate!" Then off to the loos you go to get rid of that pesky oyster. Quite what I'll put into Spumate I don't know. Cascara could be a good start. But, on a serious note, do your business a favour and run your eye over every word and sentence before you hit Send or Publish. It could save you a lot of embarrassment. Nobody wants to drink Bum Wine.
10.01.2022 I was thinking about the term ‘Human Resources’ this morning over breakfast quite why I don’t know as I’ve been happily self-employed for more than 17 years after a career in a major corporate. I’ve never liked Human Resources as a description of a corporate department or an industry. Here’s why. When I started work back in the dark ages (i.e. the early 1980s), companies had a Personnel department, which morphed somewhere in the next decade or so into Human Resources.... Personnel to me says that the department really is about people employees - as opposed to seeing people as merely resources such as IT infrastructure, office furniture, company cars, stationery and the dishwashing machine in the company kitchen. Think about that. To me, Human Resources is actually dehumanising employees. You’re not people any more, you’re a resource that can be culled, pushed sideways and considered in an impersonal manner. Human Resources is about what you can do for the company, because, let’s face it, every employee is expendable and let’s not kid ourselves that a corporate really cares about you despite promotion, incentives and personal development programs. A corporate cares about its bottom line and pleasing the shareholders. End of. Personnel fulfils the same role as Human Resources but it sounds a lot more friendly and gives an impression that the company has real people working for it, not just resources that happen to be human. It sounds ... personal. What’s your view?
