25.01.2022 MAKING LIFE EASIER & NATURAL The usual way to go about developing a method is to ask, ‘How about trying this?’ or ‘How about trying that?’ bringing in a variet...y of techniques one upon the other. This is modern agriculture and it only results in making the farmer busier. My way was opposite. I was aiming at a pleasant, natural way of farming which results in making the work easier instead of harder. ‘How about not doing this? How about not doing that?’ that was my way of thinking. I ultimately reached the conclusion that there was no need to plow, no need to apply fertiliser, no need to make compost, no need to use insecticide. When you get right down to it, there are few agricultural practices that are really necessary. The reason that man's improved techniques seem to be necessary is that the natural balance has been so badly upset beforehand by those same techniques, that the land has become dependent on them. This line of reasoning not only applies to agriculture, but to other aspects of human society as well. Doctors and medicine become necessary when people create a sickly environment. Formal schooling has no intrinsic value, but becomes necessary when humanity creates a condition in which one must become ‘educated’ to get along. Masanobu Fukuoka, One-Straw Revolution DO-NOTHING CULTIVATION In a quarter of an acre, Fukuoka produces 22 bushels of rice and 22 bushels of winter grains, enough to feed up to 10 people and requiring a few days’ work for one or two people to hand sow and harvest the crop. The Fukuoka system has spread widely though Japan and is now practised on nearly a million acres in China. 24.01.2022 The citrus canker debacle continues! I know I lost a lot of faith in our local department for the way they handled it over here also, my personal dealings with local department left me feeling like I wouldn’t cooperate with them ever again. I hope you get your compensation Chris.

18.01.2022 NEL-BOON ( miniature bush onion ), comes into season about 3 times a year, they could be found along the coast, only among the sand dunes or in sandy spots clos...e to the beach, it is ready to eat only when the shoots turn brown, dig under & you will find the Nelboon, put in container or tin, add abit of hot ashes, give it a shake, the coat automatically falls off, you can then find your miniature white onion, Very Delicious, this is how we ate them, so did my Ancestors See more

18.01.2022 This looks like a great set up, thanks Dan! Info from Dan: -air tube running to bottom- big bubbles keep it aerobic -checked under microscope weekly to monitor microbiology -all kitchen scraps, tea bags, coffee grounds, paper towel minus citrus goes in there... - filter on spigot inside drum - no molasses - if power goes out, aerate for a few days, check under microscope, until beneficial numbers are back up again and conditions are nice and aerobic See more

13.01.2022 We’ve had a few casualties from the heat and the storms keep rolling past us, hopefully we’ll get some relief soon

13.01.2022 The eastern section of our block will hopefully come into its own this wet season, it’s our main threat from fire in the dry due to wind direction and it also neighbours a farm we could get spray drift from so it’s a really important buffer zone. I will plant some trees all along the boundary next wet season to help protect our block further. -Lawn mowing fertilising middle management in place -broadcast a perennial legume and grass mix -irrigation (monsoonal trough)... On the bare ground I ran out lines of seed on contour then a shallow rotary hoe over the top, also acting like mini swales and on thatched ground I hand broadcast the seed. I’m also happy to see the little pigeon pea and moringa coming up which was planted 6 weeks ago See more

12.01.2022 Hay feeder for the sheep, 1/2 hr work and $0

09.01.2022 Love your soil

09.01.2022 Pig checking out some cassava, once this guy has moved on, I’ll spread moringa seed and plant cassava billets, sweet potato runners and pumpkin seed all through the pig pen to grow over the next 5 months ready for the next piggy- hopefully won’t have to buy any pig food next year (The orchard will also be full of papaya as a sweet treat too)

07.01.2022 Refreshing my memory on how butcher a sheep. Unfortunately the ram from our small flock has decided it’s fun to ram every human that enters the pen, and due to our animal tractor being in action now, we need safe access to all livestock to move them around our little farm. A harsh reality of owning livestock, however, we will have fresh, home grown mutton in the freezer! Not sure how he’ll taste, but he’ll feed us or the dogs
