23.01.2022 HOW OLD IS YOUR SMOKE DETECTOR? ARE YOU STILL USING THE OLD STYLE SMOKE DETECTOR? There has been a lot of talk recently regarding the different types of smoke alarms, in particular photoelectric smoke alarms. Youre probably wondering if this information is relevant to you. Should you be paying attention? What if you already have a smoke alarm installed?... The answer is YES when installing new smoke alarms in your household or when changing expired ionisation-type smoke alarms, photoelectric smoke alarms should always be your first choice. As suggested by the Duty Commander of the NSW Fire and Rescue Brigade, Stewart Alexander, were encouraging people to replace their older smoke alarms, particularly if they are aware they have an ionisation-type alarm. We recommend the photoelectric-style fire alarm. Photoelectric smoke alarms work by detecting visible particles of combustion. By aiming a light source into a sensing chamber, the light gets reflected onto the sensor when smoke enters the chamber, and the alarm is triggered. This is different to an ionisation smoke alarm, which works through detecting the invisible particles of combustion, rather than the visible ones. A small amount of radioactive material interacts between two electrically charged plates to ionise the air between the plates. When smoke enters the chamber, the ionised airflow is disrupted and the alarm is triggered. The reason that photoelectric smoke alarms are more valuable to you, is that they are more efficient at detecting slow burning, smouldering fires, which are the most common type of fire in home environments. At Detector Inspector, we only install photoelectric smoke detectors to ensure the highest level of protection. Please be aware, though, that the most important thing you can do to keep you and your family safe is change your smoke alarm batteries once a year, every year. IF you would like your smoke detector checked or have the more efficient photoelectric smoke detector installed, give the team at Direct Electrics a call on 9498 0666 (during office hours). 22.01.2022 Ceiling Fan Handy Tip! Did you know your ceiling fans have two directional settings? So, first, make sure your fan is spinning the right direction! The fan needs to turn in the right direction to actually cool you. ... You should be able to feel a breeze when standing directly under it. If you cant feel the breeze, turn off the fan and check the flip switch that changes the direction of the blades. The switch is usually located on the base of the fan and is generally marked as W (winter) and S (summer) on the cowling. 11.01.2022 Another TIP to save on Energy Costs! Its simple. During a hot Aussie summer, you cant turn down the sun, but you can add some shade to turn down the heat. The first way to get shady is to keep blinds, curtains, drapes and awnings drawn and closed. Whether its Venetian blinds, roller blinds, plantation shutters or lined curtains, keep that beautiful sunshine outside where it belongs. For sun-facing windows, light-coloured backings for blinds and curtains will help deflec...t sun heat too. By closing windows, blinds, shutters or drapes, youll be keeping the hot air and the suns rays out, so your air conditioning doesnt have to run all the time to maintain the optimal temperature. Heat absorption can be drastically reduced if your windows have a strong line of defence. Even tinted windows can stop some of the suns heat coming into your air conditioned sanctuary, and your unit wont have to work so hard. Always make sure you air conditioner is frequently serviced and the filters cleaned! For all you electrical needs and split system air con advice, please contact Derek on 9498 0666 during office hours or, send the Facebook page a message! 11.01.2022 TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR ENERGY CONSUMPTION DOWN! Perth has beautiful long summers with temperatures that can easily soar to the high 30s low 40s (degrees Celsius), so retreating to a gloriously cool air conditioned home after being in the oppressive heat of the day is the perfect way to end a working day. Its a must need for a familys relief from those endless summer days when the air can sometimes feel hot and repressive. Of course, the downside is that your air conditi...oning unit at home (or the office), will be asked to work super hard in the peak season. This means your air conditioning bill will climb quite considerably. Because energy consumption will soar just like the temperature at midday. However, there are some very simple and effective tips to reduce your air conditioning bill over the summer period so you can keep a comfortable indoor environment. Applying this night time tip will help you keep cool and less stressed when the energy bills over the summer months, comes around. Turn off at night, and save while you sleep Keep your air conditioning on during the day, and off at night. Why? Firstly, the evening air is naturally cooler, so you can take advantage of that by turning off the air conditioning and opening a window. Hopefully your bedroom is facing the direction to enjoy a gentle breeze to help cool things down. If you do find a welcome breeze, open windows or doors on both sides of your house to allow it to flow through. For comfortable sleeping, your body simply doesnt need your air conditioner to run at the same temperature as it does during the day. So, with your air conditioner off, you can enjoy some energy savings and sweet dreams. Keep watching this page for more Tips and Hints on how to save on energy costs on using your air con during the summer months! 04.01.2022 So now is time to think about installing some ceiling fans. Why? Not only because Summer starts tomorrow, but also... Because they are highly energy efficient and many fans only cost as much as a 60W globe to run. ... Also, if you run them in conjunction with your reverse cycle air-conditioner, you can also reduce your summer and winter air-conditioning running costs as they circulate the cool or warm air throughout your home. There are two main types of ceiling fans available on the market. The cheapest ceiling fans are basic metal-bladed fans, with or without lights. If you want something more upmarket, you can get ceiling fans with decorator wooden blades also with or without lights or, the high-end premium and resort style fans. Direct Electrics can fit a wide range of decorator ceiling fans of all shapes and colours for your home or outdoor entertaining area or, we can also swap over your existing ceiling fans that may be looking a bit tired, or maybe only running on one speed. Book your no obligation FREE quote for both your ceiling fans and reverse cycle air con installs. Call Derek on 9498 0666. 03.01.2022 Still using the old Halogen & Incandescent light globes? Here is some helpful info on why LED is the way of the present and future for lighting your home or office! HALOGEN & INCANDESCENT globes might be inefficient compared to some of the other options, but their prevalence over the past two centuries means they are cheap and easy to produce. However, halogen and Incandescent lights are slowly being phased out in most situations. Due to their short lifespan and wasted elec...tricity, they represent a poor choice for lighting around the home, and should only be used when other options arent suitable. COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHTS - While fluorescent lights have a longer life than halogens and incandescent lighting, the manufacture of CFLs is less than environmentally-friendly. Mercury is a toxic element, making them dangerous to dispose of. Tubes of fluorescent lighting can contain up to 15mg of mercury, enough to poison 30,000 litres of drinking water. CFLs also take a short amount of time to warm up and show their full brightness, so theyre less than perfect for areas that need immediate and bright light (like stairwells). They also cant be used with dimmer switches. LIGHT EMITTING DIODES (LEDs) have a small heat signature, meaning they much more efficient than incandescent globes, but they do have their downsides, including sensitivity to voltage, thermal dependence (they need an effective cooling sink) and are very direct in their lighting signature. Not too long ago, LEDs were considerably more expensive than other lighting options, with as much as $50 to $100 per globe. In recent years, technology has improved the manufacturing process, and we now see LEDs priced at around $8. Buying for the long term... What are the pros and cons of each globe over a 25,000 hour lifespan? A single LED light would last the entire lifespan (and more) While you would need to change an incandescent light around 21 times and A CFL at least three times. The total operating cost (including purchase and electricity) comes in at $38 for the LED, $48 for the CLFs, and a whopping $201 for the Incandescent globes. SO, if you didnt know before, you know now, LEDs are the present & future, when it comes to lighting and electricity efficiency! Want to change you old lighting to LEDs? Contact Derek on 9498 0666 and he will come and give you a NO OBLIGATION FREE QUOTE or, send him your house plans to work from!
