03.01.2022 History of Tennis in Our Community Tennis was always a popular pastime, which was reflected by the number of tennis courts throughout the district. In October 1922, new tennis courts were opened in the Soldiers’ Memorial Park. Richard Knuckey built a large tennis court at his guest house in Roleystone, which for many years was used by local players as well as guests. In 1932 sustenance workers were detailed by the Road Board to construct a tennis court in the grounds of Sist...er Whitehead’s hospital. So why was tennis so popular? Tennis was one of the few sports considered suitable for women to play. The Roleystone Tennis Club officially opened in January 1945. The Board was asked to purchase land so that Cross Park could be enlarged with new courts provided for the club. By the end of World War II, Armadale, Kelmscott, Byford and Roleystone all boasted thriving tennis clubs.
