24.01.2022 Armanii Park Stud is located at the site of the Illawarras first Agricultural Show. On Friday 23rd February 1917, the Illawarra Mercury reported: "DAPTO. DIAM...OND JUBILEE SHOW. THE FIRST SHOW. It only seems the other day that the Dapto A. and H. Society celebrated its Jubilee Show, yet many epoch making events have occurred since that time, and many good men have passed away. It is safe to assume that there is no agricultural society in New South Wales with such a record as the Dapto Society, dating back as it does to the time when the late Mr. John Browns mill was first used as a pavilion. The late Mr. Browns name is intimately associated with the history of the show, for he was the first secretary, and did an immense amount of work in the way of assisting the progress of the Society in its early days. His interest in the society never lagged, and its success to date stands as a monument to his memory. When the late Sir Harry liawson spoke at the Jubilee Show he referred to tho great work dona by the pioneers, and coupled the names of three members of the first committee with the toast;,viz., Messrs. John Brown, W. Hole, and John Thomas, who now are members among those that are not. The first steps towards holding a show at Dapto were taken in 1856, the meeting being called by means of placards printed at the Illawarra Mercury office, which was then the only paper in the district. On November 9th of the year mentioned the meeting was held at Mr. G. W. Browns Hotel, Dapto (now known as Brownsville). Mr. I. W. Irving occupied the chair, and the motion in favour of forming a society was moved by Mr. Evan Evans and seconded by Mr. Joseph Ritchie. Mr. Irvine was elected president, and Mr. John Brown, secretary, with the following committee : Messrs H . M. Osborne, Evan Evans, Thos. Hobbs, Duncan Beatson, Jas. McGill, G. J. McKenny, Andrew Thompson, Samuel Marks, Alex. Gordon, jnr., W. Moles, Campbell Murphy, John Thomas, Benjamin Marshall, Archibald McKenny, Jos. Ritchie, Percy Sheaffe, W. Melbourne, Thos. Clifford, san., G. Buchanan, W. Curtin, Ebenezer -Russell, John Colley, K. J. Marshall, J. &. Cummins, W. Graham, Jas. Colley, and Dr. John Gerard. The subscription for officers and committee was fixed at 1, and for the general public at 10s. A subscription list was opened at that meeting and 27 2s was raised. At a subsequent meeting held on November 29th, it was reported that the subscriptions amounted to 106 16s (id. Before this second meeting dispersed it was decided to hold a ploughing match on the Newton estate on January 21st, 1857, and also to hold the first show at the Dapto Steam Flour Mills [Browns Mill at Brownsville], on Wednesday, January 28th. Owing to heavy rain falling on the day selected, the ploughing match was not held. Fine weather, however, favoured the show a week later. The show is said to have been a success. The sale yards at the rear of the hotel were used for the cattle and horses, whilst, butter, grain, etc. was displayed on the ground floor of the mill across the road, and the fruit and flowers on the first floor, of that building. The entries totalled 355 and the exhibitors numbered 65. Dairy cattle were a feature of the show, and of course butter was well to the fore. Wheat, malting barley, cape barley, oats, maize, and rye grass formed features of the grain section*. Mr Ryan Evans won first prize for draught horses, and was also a prize winner in the grain section, Messrs. James McGill (Albion Park), Joseph Dunster, G. Taight, H. Lea, and G. Buchanan also won prizes in the horse section. Messrs Edward Graham, David Johnson, W. Wilson, Andrew McGill, Joseph and Robert Ritchie and Mrs. Fitzgerald won prizes in the cattle section. Messrs. Adam Denniss, W. Kirton, P. Town, W. Brown, and W. Malbon carried off the prizes in the vegetable section. The first prize for the best bag of wheat went to Mr. A. McGill, Mr. V. Town being second. Mr. Ebenezor Russell won first prizes for oats and malting barley, and Mr. Jas. Itixon for hay, the second prize for* which was secured by Mr. Patrick Gorman. For the best fresh butter Mr, John Graham, sen., was successful, Mr. George Buchanan being second. The prize for salt butter was also won by the latter. In the fruit section the prizes were won by Messrs. John Barratt, D. W. Irving, Joseph Ritchie and Thos. Hayward. The majority of the prizes in the poultry section fell to G. W. and W. Brown. Of course a banquet was held at night. THE SECOND SHOW AND SUBSEQUENT SHOWS. The same site was selected for the second show, but extra accommodation was provided in the shape of tents. In 1879 the society leased a site, on the north side of Mullet Creak bridge, where the show was held for about ten years in succession, when the Society secured its own ground, Mr. P, H. Osbome giving ten acres of land for the purpose. Of course it is only natural to assume that the progress of the Society has not been without its its drawbacks. Droughts and wet weather have. played their part, nevertheless the shows have been held, and the financial state of the Society to-day is evidence of careful management on the part of the various committees that have had charge. THE JUBILEE SHOW. In January 1907 the Society held its Jubilee Show, which was a great success. The State Governor the late Sir Harry Rawson) performed the opening, which was attended by a ministerial party. The office holders on the occasion of that show were President, Mr. George Lindsay (Horsley) ; vice-president, Mr Robert Cochrane; treasurer, Mr. B. .J. Marshall; secretary, Mr. George Lindsay (Unanderra) ; Messrs T. Musgrave, W. J. 0Brien, A A Brown, J. McPhail, J.Lindsay, E. Gibson, J.G. Fairley, W.H. Cook, W.G. Fackender, J.T Swan, Jas. Swan, A. G. Martin, H. Harris, T. Moorehead and B. T. Evans. The Society has made marked progress since the Jubilee Show, not only in the carrying on of shows, but in the shape of practical demonstrations in growing crops, and in providing suitable seed for farmers. It had been fortunate right through its history in securing good executive officers, and the men on the committee to-day are worthy successors of the early pioneers that blazed the track in those early days, when railway and steamships were not in evidence. The town of Dapto, too, has had its vicissitudes, but the future appears bright and the prospects good, and as the years roll on it is safe to assume that it will grow in importance." See more
