23.01.2022 When we designed AIATSIS (2001), our client vehemently didn’t want the humpy-style so-called Aboriginal Architecture considered appropriate at the time. They sought a building that would represent the ongoing nature of Indigenous culture, and AIATSIS’s role as a sophisticated learning institution. So ARM designed a black Villa Savoye (referencing the 1930 white Paris building by Le Corbusier) as a local versionan inversion, a reflection of Aboriginal architecture, culture o...r perceived attitudes. (It’s back to front too). This idea reflected AIATSIS’s philosophy and produced a building compatible with our adjacent National Museum of Australia, yet distinct and independent. #NAIDOC2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #reconciliation #architecture #australia

16.01.2022 We are shocked and heartbroken at the sudden loss of our dear friend and colleague, Ryan Robertson. Ryan was early in his career and, along with architecture, he had begun study other fields including economics and urban planning, thinking about how he might combine these interests. He had formidable technical skills and a heartfelt commitment to projects for peopleones that would make a strong and beneficial contribution to our society.... Ryan was also a passionate environmentalist, footy umpire, sports enthusiast, and mad keen cyclist (like half of ARM). Thanks to his technical ingenuity and spur-of-the-moment attitude, he was the only person we’ve ever known to go around with a banana strapped to his bike. He passed away on Saturday 14 November after a short illness. Donations to the Nature Glenelg Trust (@natureglenelgtrust) are welcome in Ryan’s memory. Mention Ryan’s legacy to ensure your donation goes towards a specific project that will honour him.

12.01.2022 David Greybeard, a 9x12m chimpanzee found a nice spot on Hamer Hall this week. The sculpture is by Australian artist Lisa Roet and is designed to raise questions about humanity’s relationship with nature and our closest animal relative. 11.01.2022 The Victorian Government has allocated $84 million in the 2020/21 budget to deliver our work at Melbourne’s Werribee Open Range Zoo. ARM and landscape architects TCL are designing and delivering new spaces there for animals, staff and visitors. There will be a new elephant sanctuary, a tree-top gondola called the Sky Safari, a new site for rhinos and bison, and the waterhole precinct with places to view animals, places to rest, and amenities for humans.... The elephant sanctuary will be a new world-class home for Zoos Victoria’s six Asian elephants, who are currently living at Melbourne Zoo. Design development begins soon. https://www.facebook.com/DanielAndrewsMP/posts/3588173814580462

07.01.2022 ARM is now a certified carbon neutral business! Find out how we got there with a little help from NOCO2 (Carbon Reduction Institute). See link on our bio.

04.01.2022 When ARM and @geyerdesign designed RMIT University's OurPlace@QV workplace, we wanted to reference Indigenous identity in an integral way. Not something localised or moveablesomething really intrinsic. Something that was there from the start of the design process. Something appropriate, genuine and original too. We consulted Indigenous experts in and outside RMIT and integrated identity by selecting a palette of materials and colours that correspond to the six Boonwurrung ...seasons, referencing a particular season in specific spaces. 03.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn We had Laurence Binyon’s 1914 Ode of Remembrance translated into Morse Code and perforated into the walls of one of our Shrine of Remembrance courtyards. Above is our giant steel poppy. Find out more about the symbolism in our design work at the Shrine on our website.... Photography by @johngollings #remembranceday #rememberthefallen #lestweforget
