08.01.2022 If you find the layout of Windows 10 a little frustrating, compared to earlier versions such as the infamous Windows XP and Windows 7 and providing you are not afraid of a bit of tinkering under the hood, here is an article that will help turn Windows 10's interface back to the more familiar to Windows 7. https://www.laptopmag.com/ar/make-windows-10-like-windows-7

05.01.2022 Keep those Android smart phones updated people. A vulnerability was recently discovered by Checkmarx that allows access to data stored on an Android based device as well as the ability to take control of your camera and microphone without the end user ever realising its happening. Quote from the article below...... "our researchers determined a way to enable a rogue application to force the camera apps to take photos and record video, even if the phone is locked or the screen is turned off. Our researchers could do the same even when a user was is in the middle of a voice call." https://www.checkmarx.com//how-attackers-could-hijack-your

04.01.2022 CryptoLocker Ransomware is still causing Havoc!!! The last 3-4 weeks we have again experienced an influx of requests from clients who’s PCs, Workstations and Servers that have been infected with CryptoLocker Variants. CryptoLocker is a term given to a malicious virus/script that encrypts the data on a computer, making it inaccessible without the decryption key.... The virus can enter a system a number of ways but usually, a fake email advising of an overdue electricity bill, ATO refund, undelivered AusPost parcel or even a traffic fine ticket can trick a user into clicking on a link that will infect their machine. When a computer is infected and files encrypted, a text file is usually left with instructions to contact the attacker to organize a ransom payment usually by the way of a (virtually) untraceable bitcoin payment, which usually is not honoured by the attacker anyway. We have noticed these variants are getting that sophisticated that none of the major Antivirus/Antimalware software providers can guarantee that their product will protect your system and the methods of recovery we have been successful in using in the past are starting to be circumvented by these newest variants. As there is no 100% guarantee that a software solution will protect against these threats, the only insurance against CryptoLocker/Ransomware and other threats is a reliable backup solution that should include both onsite and offsite copies of your data as your backups are also exposed to these threats if mounted and connected to the infected machine. Armidale Computers can assist with developing a backup solution for your personal or business data on everything from your home PC/Laptop to your server at work. If you are unsure if the solution you have in place will offer redundancy and recovery, please don’t hesitate to send us an enquiry and we are more than happy to assess and advise a solution to make sure you are able to recover from such an event, if (or when) it happens. Remember, it’s too late once the data is gone and if you do not have a current/daily backup system in place, the loss of data and downtime 99% of the time outweighs the cost to implement a reliable backup solution.

04.01.2022 A quick heads up to our clients. There is a new Ransomware attack dubbed #BadRabbit that has been spreading throughout Europe since yesterday, 24/10/17. Over the last couple of years we have had many clients who have suffered data loss from Ransomware attacks and although we have been successful in recovering their data most of the time, however sometimes there is nothing we can do.... Please be aware and DO NOT open emails, attachments or CLICK ON hyperlinks that you do not recognise as being related to your usual activities. In addition, please make sure your Operating System is fully patched and you Antivirus Software is up to date. Antivirus Software can never guarantee that it will protect you but we can advise on the methods and products that are most effective at protecting your data at any given time, against any given threat. If you suspect you have fallen victim please SHUT YOUR COMPUTER DOWN immediately, as this will limit the damage to your data. Remember, once it's gone (beyond the specific recovery methods we use in our industry) it is gone. If you need any advice regarding which Antivirus software is performing the best against the latest threats, suspect you are infected or wish to harden your systems against these exploits, please do not hesitate to contact us. Over the last 17 years in the IT business, we have seen many clients fall victim to these types of exploits and threats and we are well equipped to recommend best practices, procedures and software to mitigate the risk to your business and personal data.
