25.01.2022 KOMBI COFFEE IN A CANTER // Now trying this tongue-twister three times fast: Kombi coffee Cups Canteen. Not as easy as it might look. Unlike the silken blends dispensed from the 1979 T2 Kombi, at Villawood’s Armstrong Mount Duneed by coffee aficionados Craig and Stephanie Willian. That’s a much smoother proposition. And a welcome one, too, as this intrepid pair have discovered with their new Cups Canteen. ... Opening an outdoor coffee and cakes outlet in a brisk pandemic spring takes a certain conviction. For Craig and Steph, however, it was all worthwhile. But our first weekend, we could not have anticipated the interest and support from the community," Craig laughs, more than happy to be swamped by new customers. This was Stephanie’s brainchild. She found the Kombi in Torquay last December. In March, we started the fit-out and conversion. Stephanie’s ambition was driven her pastry chef skills. Craig, after 14 years in the Army as a sparkie and manager, had returned home to Geelong from Townsville looking for a change from khakis to brownies. Setting up shop wasn’t a simple proposition. Landscaping, garden beds, pathways, marquee, electricity, thunderbox, health department checks are just some of the considerations for what looks like a simple lifestyle idyll: kicking back with a Kombi plying coffee by the side of the road. It’s been a marathon, says Craig. The Kombi needed a dividing wall, a benchtop, new flooring, electrics, pumps, water and waste tanks, a sink None of it’s stopped Stephanie from belting out a swag of tempting muffins, brownies, cookies, banana bread and other mouth-watering diversions amid it all. Opening in September, with its regulation four seasons in one day, the weather’s been a touch challenging. But if the customers can tackle it, so can they. You’ll find Cups Canteen at the corner of Sovereign and Boundary, open Wednesdays through Sundays, weekdays 6am to 2pm, weekends 7 am to 2pm. And don’t pass over those brownies, you’ll regret it if you miss them. https://villawoodproperties.com.au//kombi-coffee-in-a-can/

15.01.2022 Wadawurrung, Wandana and a message of peace // A moving smoking ceremony by Wadawurrung woman Corrina Eccles has spelled out a powerful message of peace and reconciliation at Villawoods Wandana community. Her voice cracking with emotion, Corrina stood in front of giant lettering spelling out Wadawurrung Country as she delivered an especially relevant message. I stand here today to represent all those people who didnt have a voice, that had to remain silent. ... They werent able to share their identity. They werent able to stand here like I do, proudly, and say: I know who I am, I know where I belong. I am Wadawurrung. This is my country, my familys country and the spirit of my people. The ceremony launched the Wadawurrung Country message in Viallwoods giant corten lettering above the Geelong Ring Road. The initiative was driven by Committee for Geelong leadership students working with the Wadawurrung and Aboriginal business Arranyinha facilitator Marsha Uppill. The three-metre high letters, visible to thousands of motorists each day, were matched by a large triptych artwork by Mount Duneeds BJ OToole depicting the Wadawurrung countryside. The project is aimed at raising the profile, awareness and recognition of the Geelong regions first peoples. As Corrina Eccles stressed, it was a highly-visible presence not achieved beforehand. So nyatne, Villawood, you cant comprehend how much this really means. And nyatne, or thank-you, from Villawood to the Wadawurrung for the opportunity to share such important values. As our Geelong senior development manager Paul Abel stated: The Villawood letters have become an iconic part of the Geelong landscape. We like to use the prominence of this location to support worthwhile community causes and there is no more important cause than supporting the Wadawurrung people and partnering with them on Reconciliation Week. 05.01.2022 WAURN PONDS STATION UPGRADE // One of the great beauties of Villawoods Armstrong Mount Duneed, and there are a few, is the ready access it offers Melbourne commuters and others using rail services. The Waurn Ponds Railway Station on Armstrongs northern edge is an ultra-handy convenience few other developments can offer. With PTV bus services running through Armstrong every 30 minutes, its a key player in making work easier, travel quicker and your lifestyle better. With ...some significant new additions to the station, starting this month, that rail amenity is about to get even better. A new platform and overpass, an extra track to avoid delays, more and better car parking, and enhanced safety measures will all add up to a smoother, more comfortable travel. Armstrongs proximity to the Geelong Ring Road and its traffic light-free travel to Melbourne means residents have two easy options for their work commute as well as stones-throw access to the lifestyle options of the Surf Coast and Great Ocean Road. Seriously, where else can you get that kind of deal? Thing about it: Premium affordable land, beach and regional city lifestyle, you can work from home a few days a week and commute the others. And its just going to get easier with these rail upgrades and more on the way. BENEFITS So what are some of the key benefits of taking the train to Melbourne? We asked our own Graeme Quin, a regular rail commuter between Armstrong and Melbourne. Waurn Ponds is a great station to start my journey to work, he says. Its close to home at Armstrong, and I can choose my favourite carriage and seat. Using the train opens up opportunities to work and/or read or just relax during my journey to work Using the train is much, much greener than driving and its great to include some daily exercise in the journey to work. This year, I started riding my bicycle from home at Armstrong to Waurn Ponds Station. When I reach the station, I can choose between using the secure parking, or putting my bike on the train to zip around Melbourne at the other end. 01.01.2022 ARMSTRONG, Mt Duneed resident Katrina Hamilton received the surprise of her life when her favourite AFL player, Tom Stewart gave her a call. The Geelong Cats have teamed up with Villawood to acknowledge the outstanding work being done by care workers such as teachers, healthcare professional and emergency services personnel within Victorian communities. Katrina and her husband Dave have been living at Villawoods Armstrong Mt Duneed community for the past two years after ...benefitting from Villawoods Caring for the Carers program. The initiative was piloted in Geelong early in 2018, when it became apparent that people who provide an invaluable service to the community were increasingly unable to afford to live in the communities they served. The Japanese primary school teacher said it was a great community to be a part of. It is a really good estate, Katrina said. It has grown since we moved in two years ago, but they are building a massive shopping centre across the highway from us, so that is going to be really good when that opens I wont need to go into town at all. Katrina is a passionate Geelong member and is committed to supporting the club through this challenging period. To date, Villawood has helped more than 60 care workers in the Geelong region to buy land through this campaign, with many voicing that without this they simply would not have been able to afford to buy.
