24.01.2022 ANZAC DAY 2016 Recently discovered in the collection at the Army Museum North Queensland is an original 1916 ANZAC Day Order of Service for Church of England Troops (AHMS 76672). The commemorative service coincided with the Feast of Saint Mark. A copy of this program will be available for viewing at the museum this ANZAC Day. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first ANZAC Day commemorations. On 25 April 1916, approximately 2000 Australian and New Zealand troops mar...ched through London, a sports day was held in the Australian camp at Gallipoli, and various services were held throughout Australia. Anzac Day is one of Australias most important national commemorative occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. On the morning of 25 April 1915, the ANZACs set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul in Turkey), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and an ally of Germany. The ANZAC forces met fierce resistance from the Ottoman Turkish defenders. After 8 months, at the end of 1915, the allied forces were evacuated from the peninsula. Both sides suffered heavy casualties and more than 8,000 Australian soldiers had died in the campaign. During the 1920s Anzac Day became established as a national day of commemoration for the more than 60,000 Australians who had died during the First World War. After the Second World War, ANZAC Day served to commemorate the lives of Australians lost during both conflicts, and in subsequent years the lives of all those who lost their lives in military and peacekeeping operations in which Australia has been involved. Anzac Day remembrance takes two forms. Commemorative services are held at dawn the time of the original landing in Gallipoli across the nation. Later in the day, ex-servicemen and women meet to take part in marches through the major cities and in many smaller centres. Commemorative ceremonies are more formal and are held at war memorials around the country. A typical Anzac Day ceremony may include the following features: an introduction, hymn, prayer, an address, laying of wreaths, a recitation, the Last Post, a period of silence, either the Rouse or the Reveille, and the national anthem. After the Memorials ceremony, families often place red poppies beside the names of relatives on the Memorials Roll of Honour, as they also do after Remembrance Day services. Rosemary is also traditionally worn on Anzac Day, and sometimes on Remembrance Day. Rosemary has particular significance for Australians as it is found growing wild on the Gallipoli peninsula. Since ancient times, this aromatic herb has been believed to have properties to improve the memory. Lest We Forget

23.01.2022 IMAGINE GOING FROM A CRAMPED TROOPSHIP to an overcrowded lighter boat and rowed to shore under fire from the enemy. If you made it, there was a mad dash to th...e beach and then to cover as the shell explosions landed so close that they drenched your comrades with seawater and sand. This was the reality for the service personnel who set off for ANZAC Cove 102 years ago. Not only do we pause to remember their courage, we honour the memory of all of those who have fallen in service of our country, those who return with physical and invisible scars, and those families who are left behind. Legacy proudly raises the torch in honour of all of those who have served our country. LEST WE FORGET. See more

22.01.2022 A commemorative service for William Edward (Billy) Sing, will be held in Brisbane on Tuesday, May 19 - the 72nd anniversary of Billys death. Billy Sing was from Clermont in North Queensland and earned his reputation at Gallipoli as one of Australias best Army snipers. He went to Gallipoli with the 5th Australian Light Horse and later served with the 31st Battalion in England and France. AMNQ has a display about Billy Sing in the WWI gallery of the museum. The dedication of the Billy Sing Memorial will take place in Brisbane, at Lutwyche Cemetery at 11.00 am on Tuesday 19 May. http://www.sbs.com.au//monument-chinese-gallipoli-sniper-r
22.01.2022 ANZAC Day will be an extremely significant event this year - commemorating 100 years since the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed at Gallipoli. Over 50,000 people are expected to attend the Townsville ceremony and march from Anzac Park, the Strand to Jezzine Barracks. AMNQ will be open from 11am - 2pm on Saturday 25th April, honouring our ANZACs. Rosemary sprigs are traditionally worn in lapels, pinned to the breast or held in place by medals on ANZAC Day in Australia. Rosemary grows all over the peninsula at Gallipoli and the aromatic herb was believed by Ancient Greeks to improve memory - hence its significance for ANZAC Day. The Flanders poppy is the traditional symbol for Remembrance Day - 11th November - in Australia, but is also worn in New Zealand on ANZAC Day. LEST WE FORGET

12.01.2022 REMEMBRANCE DAY 11/11//2015 AMNQ Time and Space will be bridged for Remembrance Day at the Army Museum North Queensland because two local organizations have contributed to a new and special exhibit in Gallery Two. Visitors will see a tribute to the nurses of WW1 by the Townsville General Hospital Past Graduates Association who have dressed a display featuring a figure in a replica WWI nurses uniform with even a lamp similar to that of Florence Nightingale.... The Museums World War One Honour Board lists 6 North Queensland nurses who served in WWI. The stories of these wonderful nurses are shared on a panel next to the uniform. The display also features a nurse from Mackay, who was one of the first four Australian women to receive a Military medal during World War One - Mary Jane Derrer. A poppy field diorama has been created near the Honour Board with assistance from the Townsville Fibres and Fabrics Association. Amongst the traditional red poppies, purple poppies are displayed to remind us of the bravery that both humans and animals exhibit during times of conflict, and the sacrifices they continue to make in service of Australias armed forces. War horses, dogs, pigeons, donkeys and camels are just a few of the animals who have been used during times of human conflict as messengers, for detection and transportation, as mascots or companions. A kangaroo named Jimony was even used to comfort medical staff and soldiers at Australian Auxiliary Hospital in Harefield, England during World War One. Just as the red poppy denotes the human sacrifices during times of war, the purple poppy recognises the sacrifices of these animals.

10.01.2022 On display at AMNQ. Turkish Built in 1898, this weapon is a Turkish version of a Krupp Model 98 Mountain Gun, built for Sultan Abdhulhamid II the Victorious Warrior. The etchings on the barrel translate to "Forgive my Doing". The Seal of the Sultan Abdhulhamids faded inscription says "Elgazi", an adjective put before names, translating as: "Warrior, Wounded, Commander or Winner of War". Abdhulhamid II got this title after the Turkish armies defeated the Greek armies in ...1897. Ataturk also got this title and was called Ghazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. On the right breech is stamped the year of manufacture ~ 1315 in the Ottoman Hegira calendar, or 1898 in our Gregorian calendar. The Mountain Gun was traditionally drawn by two mules, or stripped down and spread across three or four mule pack loads. The mountain gun was used by Turkish/Ottoman forces in Gallipoli and the Middle East. This gun was brought home from the Middle East by Australian soldiers, at the end of the war. See more

02.01.2022 On Vietnam Veterans Day, Australians pause to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who fought in the Vietnam War. More than 60,000 Australian serv...icemen and women deployed to Vietnam between 1962 and 1975, with 521 killed in service. Many of those who survived endured great hardship during the war, and returned home with both physical and emotional scars. To recognise the participation of Australian service personnel in the Vietnam War, the Australian Government is undertaking a range of commemorative activities over the next 12 months. Today marks the launch of a new online Vietnam War Roll of Honour Image Gallery that features a range of images, from cherished family photographs to enlistment portraits and candid pictures taken in Vietnam, of the 521 Australians who did not return from war. The images were collected over several years by staff of the Office of Australian War Graves, with many provided by relatives and friends of our war dead. To access the gallery visit: http://vietnam-war.commemoration.gov.au A major national commemorative service marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan will take place in August 2016 at the Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial in Canberra. Planning is also underway, in consultation with the Vietnamese Government, for a small veterans mission to travel to Vietnam in August 2016. To assist local communities in honouring the service of our Vietnam veterans, a special one-off funding round will be built into the 2015-16 Saluting their Service grants program. The program will award grants of between $4,000 and $20,000 for initiatives such as commemorative events and reunions.
