25.01.2022 We have had a piece of jewellery handed in by an eagle eyed customer. The clasp appears to have come loose so has probably fallen off as someone was wandering, so if you are down a piece of jewellery and have been in the nursery fairly recently, give us a call and we may be able to reunite you with your piece.

25.01.2022 Well hello Saturday! I'm not sure where this week went but its definitely weekend awesome out there . . It's been a busy few months around the nursery and we have definitely seen a bunch of new customers recently, so today we are going to talk about who we are for all the new people out there. . We are a family business, with three generations currently working in the nursery, some less enthusiastic about actual plants than others . The property was bought as a bare p...addock in 1979 and every plant here has been established since then through a whole lot of trial and error and learning 'on the job'. Sandra has always been the plant person and has dragged everyone along the path until they either just did as they were told, or figured out they actually liked it. The nursery has grown around the garden, so you can generally find a full grown version of the plant you are buying or thinking about buying somewhere around you. . In terms of how we operate, we are not your hard sell type of place, we are more the wander about randomly and enjoy yourself model . We like it when you park in the actual car park, so keep an eye out for the little parking signs with arrows on them, that said we also understand some of you may not be as mobile as others, or may have sleeping children/dogs/groceries in the car, so you know, just don't park in the garden. . And when you need help, head to the shed walk up to the counter, look for the sign that says 'ring bell for service' (assuming we aren't already in the shed) and swing that rope with a bit of energy . The nursery is spread across a total of 12 acres so you need the bell to be loud. Please also remember we're not exactly built for speed and our maintenance guy hasn't quite worked out the teleportation machine, so give us a minute or two to get there . . If you want to know anything else about us, just ask, promise we don't bite (much) . Enjoy this week's photo effort! . . . #familybusiness #localbusiness #tropicalcolours #darwinnursery See more

24.01.2022 Looks like the cats outta the bag . Word of mouth has been doing a good job on this one judging by the people asking when the cafe is opening at the counter. Outta Luck cafe is on the way....

15.01.2022 Well it was Saturday morning when I started this post, so happy Saturday morning/afternoon, whatever time of the day it is now . It is a challenging time in and for the garden just at the minute, but I want to encourage you to get out there and make sure your plants are coping. Irrigation will be struggling at the moment and you may have some hydrophobic soil to deal with. There are a few methods to deal with this but ideally the method you use will involve adding well co...mposted organic matter to the soil to increase its water retention. . Now this is not a time where people think to mulch, but it can help. Use a well composted mulch or straw (mulch hay, sugar cane etc), you want it well composted or quick to break down so it is adding the organic matter you need, plus helping to slow down evaporation. A wetting agent is also useful, but is not a long term fix, and the same goes for the drown your pot plant till it holds water method. . Last thing to think about this weekend is your wet season veggie patch, Kenny has been through to stock up the @dundee.organix seeds and there is a bit available from Eden Seeds and Mr Fothergills. We will also get some more wet season wonderfuls from Eden next week(ish), so make sure you at least try a couple of new things this wet season. . Lectures finished now, check out the pretty, and if you ever wondered why we can't keep the seeds tidy it's because Bugalugs the frog flicks them all over the place while he's insect hunting . Oh and pretty pots and flowers and stuff, have a great weekend! . . . . #hydrophobicsoil #dundeeorganix #wetseasonedibles #tropicalcolours #bringonthewetseason #sickofthiswind #mulch See more

15.01.2022 Forgot a couple of newbies the other day! We have a lot of pots, statue, lanterns, birdbaths and ponds on backorder so, if you don't find just what you're looking for when you come in, feel free to ask as the perfect thing might be on the way

14.01.2022 On behalf of old matey wide eyes here, we request everyone take it nice and slow as they drive into the nursery, as apparently the middle of the driveway is a really nice place to sit and enjoy the serenity, or whatever it is that has him or her so utterly blissed out in the middle of the road that they are completely oblivious to the impending doom of approaching vehicles . . And you know just generally take it slow cause creatures of all descriptions, human and otherwise... . . . #wildlife #owls #pleasedontrunoveranything #slowdownforthecrazybird See more

12.01.2022 We need to all have a chat about edibles, a serious heart to heart if you will. Because we understand it is confusing, everyone has an opinion, there are a gazillion varieties of everything and you never know who or what is the right way to go. So here's the thing, you need to listen to everyone and no-one, because what works for you and how you need or want to garden, might be completely different to everyone else. . We get the chat from all of you, and honestly, there's s...tuff some of you achieve that amazes us and we've been here a while, and heard a lot of stories! The lovely Kenny from @dundee.organix has tested all of his stock in wet and dry season cropping, and as he says 'you've just gotta treat some of it different'. So listen to the advice, but if you want to try something, do it, maybe don't spend a million dollars trying it, but you never know until you give it a go. For a bit of inspiration everything in these photos is edible in some way. . Now ignore all that for a second and take this to heart, forget flat leaf coriander! That horrible beast has a life span of 6 weeks, and that's in perfect conditions, so don't waste your time and effort and just plant saw tooth instead . . . . #monsoongardening #gardeningexperiments #tryanythingonce #wetseasonedibles #gardeningisabouttrialanderror #makegardeningfun #flatleafcoriandersucks See more

12.01.2022 Big day here today, 4 or so pallets of ceramic pots, plants to put out and the wind just won't stop! It feels like we've picked up every single plant ten times over every day this week. We are very glad to be a little insulated from the fire scares other people are experiencing though, hopefully this all settles down and we can get back to whinging about the humidity . . On a lighter note, check out the blue on that bird bath! In all honesty, if it was solely up to me, ev...ery pot, pond and fancy thing here would be blue, so just as well you lot keep me in line with your outlandish requests for other colours . We did get told by the supplier that if we weren't fussy about colours we could get a lot more stock, sooo there are some different colours this time round. So if you're looking for a something a bit odd we have a few at the moment. See more

10.01.2022 For the customer who came in and got some hay, gypsum and potting mix, pretty sure this is your Gustavia on the bench

10.01.2022 We do love a project around here, started on the @outtaluckcoffee kitchen garden today . . 08.01.2022 Sandra has been busy this week, and judging by the toasty vibes coming off the kiln there's more 'cooking' . . Also if you're coming down on Sunday Outta Luck Coffee will be open, as well as the freebies from the Rural Potters, so treat yourself to a biccie then maybe bypass the instant and get yourself a coffee with the man with the machine. He does a pretty awesome cold brew too (tea and coffee), not to mention pies, sausage rolls and the brownies are droolworthy. Rural Potters Pottery #ruralpotters #christmas2020 #humptydoocoffee

08.01.2022 Well this pretty much makes up for missing out on the Darwin Festival sponsor party last night, thanks to a rush trip to the lovely Dr Modak at Greenhouse Medical for an eye related incident. . 07.01.2022 Found a mumma when we went to check the Antidesma for flowers earlier today, and was a little worried when she wasn't there this afternoon, but it looks like she is just off picking up dinner . . 06.01.2022 This is going to be a bit of a lecture, but it has a point so bear with us, or just go and read the article instead and wait for us to get off the soapbox with a 'pretty' post. Here at the nursery we feel humans have a responsibility to our world, we all express it differently but the core premise is the same, and that is we need to compensate the land we live on for the damage we cause just by existing. If any animal lived on this planet the way we do they would be considere...Continue reading

05.01.2022 We are not exceptional with dates around here, so it was strange to realise today that the last plant for this garden went in on a significant date. This garden has been done in a quintessentially Kerry way, that is, it will now be left alone for as long as it takes Sandra to get the shits and say 'will someone mulch that f#+&*?g garden please?!' Thanks to Darwin Plants for some extra plants we were short on, and Rural Garden Supplies for some other essentials.

04.01.2022 Turns out the 'lift heavy things and don't ask about plants people' like getting out and about a bit, because they have asked me to get them more deliveries to do. Personally I think they have just worked out it means they get to sit in an air-conditioned van for a bit, and really who can blame them for that . . With that in mind, if you were ummming and ahhhhing about something because you doubted your ability to cram it in the car and/or get it out of the car at the oth...er end without a bit of muscle, yes we do deliver. We can also pot things up and make them look pretty for gifts. We've had quite a few requests for that particular service from interstate for obvious reasons, and although we aren't known for our interior design skills, we have enjoyed wandering about taking photos for final approval via email. So for those of you whose family is a little reluctant to do the old gift voucher, feel free to drop that particular hint and we'll sort them out . . As with all things these days the service isnt free, and will depend on distance and what you need done. A pallet to the barge for Tiwi Island ($75 for packing, wrapping and delivery) is going to cost more than a couple of plants to Howard Springs ($30) for example , and even though you city peeps always tell us how veeeerrrrry far it is to come and see us we will even try and keep it cheap for you . As for you regional folk, we can get 70ish plants in 200mm pots on a pallet for the barge, and a whole lot more in the van, so if you can get an order together with your friends and family, we can probably do you a good deal too. . And now that I've done our version of a hard sell, check out today's wandering inspiration . . . . #liftheavythingsanddontaskaboutplantspeople #gottakeeptheworkershappy #deliveryvan #tropicalcolours #saraca #plantsmakethebestpresents See more

04.01.2022 Tempting the rain gods again with a freshly written chalk board . And before you ask, yes we have Blue Frangipani, no I don't have any decent photos of the flower (check out the Curcuma I snapped on the way back from the front though ), and yes we have plenty. . Here's our Blue Frangipani origin story according to Sandra - . 'I swapped it for a white one with that collector that comes and visits every now and again that time we went to Thailand. You know the bald one who...se family does the cars.' . For those of you who don't do Sandra translations, she swapped it with another collector during a trip to Thailand in 2007. The collector she got it from is from India and the plant originated there. She created a couple of trees here and has sold it in small batches ever since with the ever so fancy name 'Blue Frangipani'. It has since become very popular and been blessed with a number of names depending on where you get it, but that's ours and that is where it came from. . . . #raingods #buildup #curcuma #frangipani #darwinnursery See more

02.01.2022 We'll do a pretty post later (once we get over the shock from the rain) but here's a little reminder from the Territory Wildlife Park about why, even though it can be frustrating, we need to share our gardens and play nicely with the wildlife

01.01.2022 Our shed guardians are back too, along with Patch the poser
