11.01.2022 The Importance of Stretching We all forget to stretch our muscles from time to time. Or simply in our minds we don’t have time. We sometimes feel that ‘okay I have 1 hr to work out then it’s back to work’, or something else important. And that’s where we are mistaken. If you do a 45min work out, it leaves you at least 15mins to stretch, which would be much more beneficial for your muscles recovery than you may think. People tend to think that stretching is just for athletes, ...but we all need to make it a regular thing and on a daily basis, whether we’re in a gym or on a sports field, track , or sitting at a desk, or doing everyday household chores. It keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and helps to maintain range of motion in our joints . Below are a few dot points as to why stretching is important. * Decreases muscle stiffness and increases range of motion * May reduce your risk of injury * Helps relieve post-exercise aches and pains * Improves posture * Helps reduce or manage stress * Reduces muscular tension and enhances muscular relaxation * Improves mechanical efficiency and overall functional performance * Prepares the body for the stress of exercise * Promotes circulation * Decreases the risk of low-back pain. So do your muscles a favour and set some time aside to STRETCH.

03.01.2022 So moving on from my previous posts with regard to Psoas. The last time I spoke to you I stated that I would post information with regard to knowing whether you... have a psoas muscle imbalance or not. I totally believe your body will tell you what you need, whether that be related to the type of exercise that works for you, the type of food you need when and how often, but only if you listen and feel and do not allow your body to be a mystery to you. This also applies to psoas it literally will tell you what it needs. However, here are a few ways to tell if you have a psoas muscle imbalance: Leg length discrepancy. A tight psoas muscle can cause your pelvis to rotate forward. This will more often than not, cause an an internal rotation of your leg on the affected side. The opposite leg will then have to rotate externally to counter the internal rotation of the other leg. Your body will always try and balance even if it is detrimental to the body as a whole. This will make the affected leg longer so that every time you take a step, it will drive your leg further up into your hip socket. This can lead to functional leg length discrepancy. Knee and lower back pain. If you suffer with knee or lower back pain that appears to have no cause, it may actually be coming from your psoas muscles. When your femur is literally locked into your hip socket due to a tight psoas muscle, rotation in the joint can’t occur. This can cause your knee and lower back to torque, ultimately causing pain. Postural problems. When your psoas is too short or tight, it will pull your pelvis into an anterior tilt, compressing the spine and pulling your back into hyperlordosis. Therefore you will have a pronounced dip inwards of the lower back and your bottom will protrude. On the opposite side of the coin, if your psoas is overstretched or weak, it can flatten the natural curve of your lumbar spine. This in turn, will give the appearance of a flat bottom. You will also suffer with tight hamstrings pulling down on the sitting bones, which causes the sacrum to lose its natural curve and results in a flattened lumbar spine. This can lead to low-back injury, especially at the intervertebral discs. This can also be accompanied by pain in the front of your hip. Frustratingly, it actually is also possible for your psoas muscles to be both tight and overstretched. In this case, your pelvis is pulled forward in front of your center of gravity, causing your back to curve (swayback) and your head to protrude forward. In my next post I will provide you some more information that could indicate a psoas imbalance.
