08.01.2022 We take our commitment to educating our customers seriously and the last thing we want to do is confuse people further. We have taken on board some comments and... questions and Dr Nerida Richards has added this addition to the original post. *** EDITED TO ADD*** this post is not saying to reduce the amount of forage/fibre fed. It is simply saying that feeding less of your forage/fibre as chaff and more as hay, pasture or other long stemmed fibre that takes longer to eat and makes your horse chew more has multiple benefits for your horse. Also if your horse is aged and cannot chew hay then it is a great idea (and in-fact necessary) to feed large amounts of chaff. But it would still be a good idea to feed any hard feeds separately to the bulk of the chaff so that any starch can be properly digested in the small intestine. As a guide, stick to a one to one volume of chaff to hard feed, especially if your hard feed contains oil or grains/starch. So if you feed two dippers of hard feed per meal, ad a maximum of 2 dippers of chaff and make the rest of your horse's forage requirement up with hay, pasture or other long-stemmed fibre. -- Should I feed chaff? As Australians, we are obsessed with chaff, and we have to admit, there is something, what is it (comforting?) about feeding chaff. It makes a feed seem bigger which seems to make us humans feel better. But is chaff actually a good thing? The answer is, it depends. Feeding lucerne chaff with any grain based feeds you are feeding is likely a good thing. A couple of studies have shown that horses fed lucerne + grains had a lower incidence of gastric ulcers than horses who were not fed lucerne with their grain. In fact ulcers resolved in some horses when lucerne was fed. So based on this, it seems a good idea to feed some lucerne with grains. Chaff is also useful for mixing supplements into for easy keepers who are getting very little if any other feed. Too much chaff though is not a good thing. If you use chaff to make a feed too bulky, the extra bulk will make feed travel quickly through the stomach and small intestine. The faster feed travels, the less it is digested. Which means too much chaff might actually reduce the digestion of feed. Feeding chaff is also expensive, compared to feeding hay and chaff requires less time and less chewing than hay. Which means more boredom, longer intervals between feeding and less saliva. All of this can increase the risk of ulcers. So only feed chaff in limited amounts, and instead of feeding lots of chaff, feed a little chaff and then feed the rest of the forage your horse needs as longer stemmed hay or pasture.

07.01.2022 Wishing everyone a safe and happy Easter xx
