11.01.2022 Allan Houser was among the first Native American painters trained in Santa Fe in the 1930s. He executed his first major sculpture in 1948, a commission to comme...morate the service and sacrifice of all native soldiers in WWII. He went on to create thousands of sculptures, drawings, and paintings over the course of his career. Today, his work is in the permanent collection of over 70 museums across the US and Europe, and in 2004 the Smithsonian honored him with a retrospective. Arguably the most widely collected 20th century Native American artist, he was a catalyst for many movements and had a huge influence on the generations who followed.
