25.01.2022 Another one for the brains trust. We have two 'garlic chive' plants growing in the community garden - but they have different flowers. When we google garlic chives it says the flowers should be white. Any insight and clarity much appreciated. 'Ordinary' chives have the hollow leaves, right? 24.01.2022 Natural pest management is important in our community garden and we strongly encourage beneficial insects into our garden. This would be an interesting webinar to learn more about this form of pest management for our members and our local community members.
21.01.2022 A video of the family reunion following the release of a baby magpie that had been rescued by @WIRES volunteer, Amanda. It was a very touching reunion. WIRES Willoughby City Council
17.01.2022 Amidst all the doom and gloom, it’s lovely to remember that spring is just around the corner. Covid restrictions have added a new challenge to maintaining the garden, but fortunately gardeners living within 5km are still exercising and looking after the garden (wearing masks while they work!). It is lovely to see the thoughtfulness, consideration and planning that goes into working in the garden safely. If you are walking through the garden as part of your exercise program yo...u will see that winter plantings are now getting close to harvest. Those who work in the garden are taking small amounts for personal use the garden’s way of saying thank you to the hard work volunteers put in looking after the garden. Conversion of the raised beds to the WaterUps WaterUps from Down Under sub irrigation watering system is pretty close to being finished. This has been a HUGE job involving digging out all the soil (bed by bed), installing the irrigation system and then reinstating the soil and replanting the beds. Seeds and seedlings are now purchased in readiness for the summer planting. Gardens require constant attention and planning as well as hard work! Thank you to the gardeners who have put up their hand to start seeds at home and a big call-out to those dedicated waterers who ensure the seedlings in potting area are looked after. The garden is constantly changing. This year we have planted a few more bee attracting flowers and hiding among the veges (and in the wildflower area) you will see some lovely smiling surprises.
16.01.2022 Using a WCC community grant to purchase the infrastructure and a lot of hard work and labour from the gardeners all our raised beds have now been converted to the WaterUps sub channel irrigation system .... just in time for summer! https://www.waterups.com.au/community-gardens-and-the-task- WaterUps from Down Under Willoughby City Council
14.01.2022 Gardens are full of surprises. Sometimes it's the flowers, sometimes it's the bounty, sometimes it's the gardeners and sometimes it's the wildlife and insects. Today the bees caused some joy, a surprising jonquil started smiling and one of the gardeners commented what a nice feeling it was to walk among the mandala. Plus we are going on a voyage of discovery with kale. Enjoy
12.01.2022 Our third raised garden bed is summer ready. It has been converted to a wicking bed using WaterUps Sub-Irrigation Channels and is being filled ready for planting. 11.01.2022 So, we have started some weed tea. Oh my it gets a bit stinky. That adds to the worm farms and composting. :-)
09.01.2022 The garden is constantly changing. Winter crops are gradually being replaced with summer crops, the bee-attracting flowers are beginning to smile and all the raised beds have now been converted to the Water-Ups sub-irrigation channel system which should make a huge difference this summer. Gradual garden modifications are taking place and some interesting shapes are emerging. The mandala rays add a lovely visual element to the garden and we have planted a donated olive tree as a feature at its centre. And our first sunflower has appeared.
08.01.2022 Such a lovely family reunion in the garden on Thursday. We have a couple of magpies that come and garden with us. They appear as soon as they see someone working in the garden and they hop around happily collecting the grubs. Unbeknown to the community gardeners,, one of the residents in a nearby house which backs on to the garden had called for help from WIRES because a baby magpie had become trapped in their yard. Amanda, a volunteer from WIRES took the call and rescued th...e baby bird then took it to the Vet for a checkup. She then came down to the garden to check out whether the baby maggie's parents might be around and to suss out the chances of successfully releasing the baby. After talking to the gardeners about our 'garden assistants' she was hopeful of a happy reunion. An hour later she returned with the baby magpie and a delightful,. happy family reunion took place. Thanks for your good work WIRES and well done to the the lovely WIRES volunteer Amanda. Willoughby City Council WIRES See more
08.01.2022 We are reaching out to the local community #Artarmon #Naremburn #willoughby to see if there is any interest in holding a Carers and Kids (Mums & Bubs? / Minders and minors?) gardening gathering on Tuesday. This way those who want to garden can do so while networking with other carers and sharing the ‘looking-after-the-kids’ time. Maybe it’s a gardening playgroup?? We are thinking Tuesdays from 10am? Please let us know if you are interested by emailing [email protected] If there is enough interest we can start planning for a post-lockdown start and figure out how to make it work. At the moment it’s just an idea for people who would like to contribute to the community garden, but whose child care commitments make it difficult. Nothing formal can be put in place until lockdown rules are relaxed but that does not stop us from optimistically planning for the future. See more
06.01.2022 If we ever get WCC to approve our chook shed (we've had to put in a DA!) there are some good ideas here.
02.01.2022 Every new growing season we reach out to our gardeners and ask what they would like to grow in the coming season. As we have a multi cultural bunch, some suggestions generally turn out to be new to the other gardeners. It is a great sharing of knowledge. So, as a result of input from one gardener, another of our gardeners has taken on the challenge of germinating bitter melon seeds (knowing full well she had no idea how to get them started). This means research and learning.n YouTube is a great resource. Stay turned
02.01.2022 Artarmon Parklands Community Garden is one of the 30,000 community groups Grill'd has worked with over the past 10 years. Funds raised from the Grill'd Community Matters program has helped us buy seeds, tools and other gardening essentials. And their burgers are good!
