21.01.2022 It took a little longer than usual to complete this one. In fact, one day when feeling more than a little trapped at the easel, I decided a break amongst the mountains would be useful. Why not on the mountain featured in the middle of the painting? Talk about "put yourself in the picture"! It had the desired effect...there was something eminently correct about describing a distant ridge in paint that I walked along days previously. "Beyond The Last Ridge" 80x100cm Oil on canvas.

21.01.2022 I completed this painting some time ago. It sat on display gathering dust with little interest from potential buyers so, recognizing its shortcomings, I decided to add more interest. I deepened the tones to bring out the highlights, restructured some of the hills and introduced some life in the form of a group of Pukako. I love these birds. A familiar sight along the South Island's west coast, they add inevitable sparkle to any scene where swamp and pasture combine such is t...heir proliferation across partially developed farm land; the "swamp hen" being one of few native species to prosper after the onset of modern development. A seemingly very intelligent bird, they know to avoid people and use any available cover to hide behind as they sneak, body lowered on long legs, away from danger before beating a hasty retreat on clumsy wings. 09.01.2022 Its nice to finish a painting - especially one that has been shelved for some time. A lot of water gone "over the falls" since I started this one! (we wont get into that) A difficult riverscape; a wide aspect hard to fit into a typical rectangle and I got very wet trying to find the best angle losing the "water proof" camera to moisture in the process! (the warranty did came through) The late inclusion of a flock of white Cackatoo's gave life to what would have been a rather bland painting serving to draw the light of the white-water up through the painting and into the darker tree's beyond giving more balance to the scene.
