24.01.2022 Its been a while since last posting and in that time at Art Club we went back into the studio for a few weeks but are now back on Zoom for at least the next 4 weeks. While back in the studio I was able to photograph some of the work we did last term on Zoom. Here are some watercolours we did so long ago when Covid was just starting of the beautiful but potentially deadly virus. Artists left to right; Archer Claffey, Amber Bruce, Arthur Bissland, Archer Ferrier, Byron Paff Tranquille, Carlo Gillick, Theo Tribe, Maya Sheehan, Holly Carr and Gabby Chick #artclubnorthcote #artclub #artclassesforkids #artclassesforchildren #watercolours #coronavirus #coronavirusart

24.01.2022 I wanted to draw attention to my students who depicted so movingly our experience of the bushfires over the Summer. A couple had to be evacuated from their holidays and it was a very frightening experience for them. I wasnt sure whether to bring it up but they chose to depict it, I hope it was cathartic so me how. Artists left to right; Ava Chehade, Emile Vincent, Nile Li, Maya Sheehan, Rihanna Moussi #artclubnorthcote #kidsart #childrensart #bushfireart #bushfiresaustralia

22.01.2022 Last term I worked with a group of 24 kids at ArtPlay Art Club to create this interactive exhibition that was designed and made by kids for kids (with a little help from me, Jas Carl, Meg Rennie and ArtPlay staff). We created a magical world for kids to explore called Scrapatorium which will be open until late January and is free to visit. If you dont already know, ArtPlay also do all sorts of awesome art workshops for 0-12year olds and its sibling Signal for 12-25 year olds.#artplaykids #signalarts #kidsart #artclub

22.01.2022 I will have to post all the works done for this project because you really need to see every single one of them. These wonderful textile pieces are to be part of an online global project called the ‘Covid19quilt’ run by Melbourne artist Kate Just which gathers and shares experiences of COVID-19 via craft. I thought it would be a great project to help the kids process this strange year and reflect on how it had changed their lives. 20.01.2022 The Years Art Club End of a Year Extravaganza - my favourite one yet!!(But I think that every year.) This year the Art Clubbers ranging from 6yrs to 16yrs created their own worlds on a floating islands and what incredible variety and imagination!! Inspired by Minecraft, Fortnight, Laputa, Castle in the sky, Avatar and other fantasy imagery we created mini paper mache worlds inhabited by model train figures, animals and trees. Its been 5 weeks of hard work but so worth i...t as it looked amazing. The parents who it had been kept a secret from were surprised and amazed and the students proud. What a great day! 17.01.2022 A big hit was making an illustrated recipe booklet. It really showcased the talents of all those natural graphic designers in the classes. The project was to create a 4 page booklet that explains how to cook something - it could be as simple as toast or hot chocolate or something more complex like Cocos chocolate mousse. As we are all stuck at home this project was chosen to use the domestic realm as reference, so that if youre not sure what a fridge looks like then you can... walk to the kitchen and draw it. We looked at Melbourne Illustrators like @aliceoehr & @lisakoesterke_illustration - there really are so many fabulous Melbourne illustrators and you can see their work at a gorgeous little gallery in Collingwood called @lamingtondrive. The quality of the work was really awesome and the it was so much fun! 17.01.2022 Art Club has still been running during these crazy times and moved to Zoom like everyone else. I hope it provided a continuation of some weekly creative time, and a respite from all the madness. But I can sense that everyone is so over living online and cant wait to get back to the studio which we are planning to do in a couple of weeks . But despite the difficult circumstances the kids have still been producing awesome work. Here are some of the lolly/ desert paintings that kids created. Artists left to right; Archer Gearon, Carla Lubbock, Emile Vincent, Gabby Chick, Imogen Hay, Jarrah Gibson, Nile Lee, Sarah Potter & Zoe Rayner. #artclubnorthcote #artclassesforkids #artclassesforchildren #artclassesforkidsmelbourne #candy #candypaintings

14.01.2022 This week we were inspired by Keith Haring and his exhibition at the NGV. Most of the kids have seen his work if not at the gallery, then the mural on Johnson St or t-shirts at Uniqlo. I love how Haring spreads a positive message of love and friendship without it being cheesy which is a hard task. We started our exploration by drawing stick figure versions of poses we took turns to strike, looking at the different shapes the body created. We used these initial stick figures to create more developed drawings. Artists left to right; Eliza Clear, Byron Paff Tranquille, Emily Vallay, Jarrah Gibson, Nile Li, Coco Song, Emile Vincent, Arlo McEwan, Zoe dAbbs, Imogen Hay #artclubnorthcote #kidsartclasses #childrensartclasses #artclub #artclubmelbourne #keithharing #ngv

13.01.2022 The older classes explored how to draw hair, as it is a common area of difficulty. We started by drawing a section of hair and a curl. We explored how to create form by rendering light and dark areas with grey lead pencils, blending sticks and rubbers. They then progressed to attempting a whole head of hair or multiple styles for various characters. As inspiration we looked at the incredible work of @hong_chun_zhang who uses her beautifully drawn images of hair to explore ide...as about culture, gender and family. We also took on the #toonmechallenge and had a go at drawing half a selfie either digitally or manually. 11.01.2022 It’s been a while since I’ve posted. - Covid lethargy had got the better of me. This was actually a project last term. It was a weaving project to make a bookmark. It was hugely popular and some went on to restring their cardboard looms and make more weavings. This is an awesome photo of Otto and his great bookmark that his Mum took. If you want instructions on how to make your own check out ‘Tate Kids’ and while you’re at it there are lots of other great art projects to do with kids. #artclubnorthcote #artclub #artclassesforkids #artclassesforkidsmelbourne #artclassesforchildren #weaving #cardboardloomweaving

11.01.2022 I thought exploring the calming domestic still lifes of Georgio Morandi would be very apt during lockdown and post lockdown. I remember as a young person I never got his paintings but have grown to love them as I get older and really appreciate their calm ambience which we can all do with a bit of at the moment. Of course many of my students had the same reaction as I did when young but I have tried to convince them and the results are gorgeous. If nothing else the students explored the glorious colour palette of earth colours that Morandi loved so much. Artists left to right; Silvia Righetti Baker, Isabelle Hayes, Alice Davis, Rory Hill, Otis West and earth colour palette. #artclubnorthcote #artclub #artclubmelbourne #artclassesforkids #artclassesforchildren #artclassesforteens #georgiomirandi #kidspainting #teenpainting

10.01.2022 It feels like pre virus was A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away when we did an urban photography project. Since then weve all been scrambling to work out what the future will look like. I hope you are all coping ok and are not ill. Art Club will be going online next term but Im still working out the details which Ill post next week. Anyway I thought youd all like to see some fabulous photos that my older students took. We were inspired by the fabulous urban photos... of Andrew Tan. Each student had a theme they worked to such as reflections, street art, street signs, flowers, colours or patterns. We discussed how nowadays with photography so accessible via our phones we are constantly bombarded with images which makes it is very difficult to create a photo that catches peoples attention , so you need to try to see things from a different perspective. We also spoke about composition and symmetry vs the law of thirds. Hope you enjoy them. Artists left to right; Sarah Wongmuang, May Lopez, Stephanie Rostan-Herbert, Eva Verdon & Charlotte Nance, Harvey Owen, Silvia Righetti- Baker, Frances Graham, Charlie Mitchell, Isobel Nance & Maya Shookry #artclubnorthcote #artclub #teenart #urbanphotography #photography #andrewtan See more

10.01.2022 When we were back in the studio for a moment - the last 2 weeks of term 2 - we made these animal masks from papier-mâché which was a fun way to end a difficult term. There are still a load of unfinished masks that we will will complete when we are out of lockdown and Ill show you them then. We used as inspiration the cute and stylish paper mache works of @abigailbrownart amongst others. Artists left to right; Rosie Emptage, Tuesdays class, Otis West, Mary McKie, Thursdays class, Jaime Thorne and mask masking in Wednesdays class. #artclubnorthcote #artclub #artclassesforkids #artclassesforchildren #abigailbrownart #papermache #papermacheart #papermachemasks #animalmasks

10.01.2022 Our first project of the year was about our holidays and inspired by the paintings of Jean Michel Basquiat and his exhibition on at the NGV at the moment. As a warm up we playing a few games of Pictionary and talked about drawing in a symbolic way like Basquiat. I also encouraged the kids to use mixed media - paint, oil pastels, sharpies and poscas pens and to include words or text. Some embraced his style but others hated it as they saw it as childlike and what they are tryi...ng to move on from. Not surprisingly some of the most successful were from the youngest kids as they still work so spontaneously and that self consciousness that comes with age and awareness hasnt set in - something that is so hard to overcome as we get older. #artclubnorthcote #artclub #artclassesforkids #artclassesforchildren #jeanmichelbasquiatinspired #jeanmichelbasquiat #kidspaintings Artists left to right; Maya Sheehan, Archer Gearon, Saskia Huntley, George Cantwell, Jarrah Gibson, Jaime Thorne, Arlo McEwan, Alex Delaney, DaliRantall-Kitzi, Matthew Long See more

09.01.2022 Once again using what we have at home as reference we sculpted fruit and vegetables in air dry clay and later when they had dried painted them. It was an exercise in really looking at things that are around you all the time but that you take for granted and have never really stopped to look at properly. 08.01.2022 To record these unprecedented times, we did a project based on our zoom classes. We dressed up for our Zoom Portrait photo and then illustrated it in a medium of choice. Some chose a different approach and drew a fantasy Zoom class, such as Imogen, who drew the zoom class as class of Marvel heroes. Artists left to right; Wednesdays class, Amber Bruce, Alessia Campisi, Arthur Bissland, Byron Paff Tranquille, Archer Ferrier, Imogen Hay, Dali Rantall-Kitzi, Maya Sheehan and Finn Dalling #artclubnorthcote #artclub #artclassesforkids #artclassesforchildren #zoom #zoomportraitsketch #zoomportraits

05.01.2022 Our first project for this term was a fun one inspired by the very ‘kawaii’ work of Japanese stone artist Akie Nakata @akie_2525 - you have to check out her work! I had delivered a selection of stones and acrylic paints ready to be transformed. We examined each stone to see what animal they suggested and set about releasing it. Too cute! 03.01.2022 Our second Zoom project this term was inspired by the multi talented local artist Dylan Martorell (illustrator, musician and installation artist). You can see his illustration work at www.jackywinter.com/artists/dylan-martorell. We were inspired by the way he uses lots of different types of lines in his drawings and initially tried our hand at copying some of his mark making before we embarked on creating our own marks for our images of our ‘fantasy holiday’ - as we aren’t tr...avelling anywhere soon, at least we can dream of places we’d like to go and create them ourselves. I was so impressed by the results and the kids really liked this way of drawing. Artists left to right; Finn Dalling, Nile Lee 2-3, Archer Ferrier, Ella Sertkan 5-6, Otis West, Archer Claffey, Amber Bruce & Zoe Rayner #artclubnorthcote #artclub #artclassesforkids #artclassesforchildren #dylanmartorell #linedrawings #markmakingart #fantasyholidays See more
