25.01.2022 On now // Megan Kirwan-Ward, Stitchscape. The work in this luscious exhibition shows off Megans deep affinity with textiles. Silk, organza, cotton and linen fabrics are melded with owl and kestrel feathers to create distinctive artworks - exploring stitch as a mark-maker and a means to form layers of colour and texture. Opulent and sumptuous, the works seem to leap out from their frames to enthral viewers with their fine detail and composition. Catch the exhibition at our gallery in Cathedral Square until 25 July. Were open from Wednesday to Saturday!

23.01.2022 Brad Rimmer // Nocturne on now at our gallery in Cathedral Square. At dusk the animals that inhabit the day become nervous. The fear may not be related to darkness itself but unknown dangers hidden in the darkness as the colour of day evaporates into the vague, haunting monotone of nightlight. Artwork: Brad Rimmer, Nocturne 31, archival digital print, 40 x 60cm.

15.01.2022 Install // Day 2! A great day in the gallery with Antony Muia pitching in to install his incredible exhibition, Forest of Dis. Influenced by Dantes Divine Comedy and the authors depiction of a medieval after-life, Antonys series of ink and watercolour drawings illustrate geographic locations described in both Greek and Roman mythology, and Dantes epic poem. The meticulous pen and ink illustrations were completed while meditating on similarities between the contemporary world and Dantes poetic interpretations of heaven and hell. You'll want to see this layered and thoughtful work in the flesh! Opening Saturday 27 June - Antony Muia // Forest of Dis with Megan Kirwan-Ward // Stitchscape .

07.01.2022 Merrick Belyea: Even in Arcadia, There Am I at Art Collective WA in Perth until 10 October. New review by Nyanda Smith. Trajectories of light spin through a ...gauze of foliage. Silhouetted trees precipitously edge against singular grey-blue skies. Tiers of shadowy undergrowth move and spill, signalling inscrutable biological activity. Merrick Belyeas recent paintings document pockets of remnant bushland at the fringes of Perths suburbs. An exploration of the juncture of land and sky; unifying colours tan, yellow; and a repeat symbology of motifs link these disparate landscapes. Using oil on board, sections are by turn built-up and elongated; scores formed by indents to the surface before the application of paint. In Ashfield Flats (2018) vertical lines evoke the structures of reedy, piquant swampland. View to Woodman Point (2019) takes a tree-top vantage: a thin seam of fulgent Indian Ocean just-visible through ragged contours of leaves. Four paintings, Near Gabbadah I, III, IV, and V (2019), explore compositional shifts in a coastal site an hour north of Perth, where suburbs thin to farmland. Works depict stands of Eucalypts and vegetation crowding against a high horizon; before moving to a sparse agrarian view, of lone trees and a broad sky. Belyeas appraisal draws sharp attention to temporality to landscape marked by its point in time. The title of the exhibition references a Latin phrase used since the 17th Century within artistic representation, to express a hankering for a utopia coupled with a recognition of a flawed human existence rendering the pursuit futile. The works exist as a form of reckoning, both with the past the colonial, agronomic razing of the environment; and with the future as precariously defined by our destructive epoch. As fragments of erstwhile landscape, the sites point to our implication in this loss. Beyond the potent political and psychic symbolism of the paintings, however, is a simple meditation upon the visceral present: Belyeas sensitive reading of the colour, light and atmosphere of landscape an attentive recognition of the vestige that persists, today, in spite of us. - Nyanda Smith #TheReviewBoard#artcollectivewa#merrickbelyea#artistsinperth #Art
