25.01.2022 Deakin Art Collection in focus. Today our Art Collection Officer, Claire Muir, looks at a painting by Margaret Ackland called Run, which was acquired by Deakin University in 2008. Margaret Ackland is a graduate of the National Art School in Sydney (1973-76) and has participated in over 30 solo and group exhibitions during her career. She has been shortlisted multiple times for several of Australia’s major art prizes, including the Archibald Portrait Prize, the Portia Geach Po...rtrait Prize and the Blake Prize for Religious Art. Her most recent exhibition called Social Distancing was held online through Flinders Lane Gallery (16th April - 4th July 2020). Run is an example of Ackland’s garment portraits, where she presents still life objects as moving, three-dimensional, animated forms. The ethereal nature of the see-through plastic raincoat captures the movement and personality of its wearer, and yet the coat’s owner remains absent and invisible. 23.01.2022 Deakin Art Collection in focus. Today our Art Collection Officer, Claire Muir, looks at a print by Victorian artist Rona Green titled ‘Dutch,’ which was acquired by Deakin University in 2010. Rona Green studied art at La Trobe University, the Victorian College of the Arts and most recently at Monash University, where she completed a Master of Fine Art (2012). She has exhibited extensively in solo, group and award exhibitions since 1997.... Green’s acclaimed prints have employed most of the printmaking mediums relief prints, etchings, linocuts, screenprints, lithographs and digital printmaking. Her subjects include zombies, misfits and tattooed animal figures, all inspired by her interest in science fiction, horror films, Egyptian art, domestic animals, tattooing traditions and subcultures. These creatures appear in her work with varying degrees of pathos and humour, but always with affection, as she explores the concepts of individuality, identity and the body. ‘Dutch’ was included in the 2010 Deakin University Art Gallery exhibition of Green’s works, entitled ‘Rona Green: Prints and Poppets 2000-2010.’ This print depicts a tattooed rabbit staring confidently at the viewer, as if daring anyone to challenge their right to self-expression. Green presents an individual comfortable in their own skin, unafraid and unashamed to be who they want to be. 09.01.2022 Deakin Art Collection in focus. Today we look at an assemblage artwork titled Black blue bundle 2018 by visual artist Rox De Luca, acquired from the 2018 Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award. Originally from Melbourne, De Luca is now based in Bondi Beach, Sydney. De Luca is known for her use of found plastics. She creates sculptural forms from waste that she collects washed up on local beaches during her daily walks. By taking something that is discarded an...d using it to create a revered object De Luca draws attention to the critical issue of plastic pollution of our oceans and fragile marine environments. As she explains in her artist statement, My works are made out of plastic shards and remnants that flourish on my local beaches, Bondi and Rose Bay. Sometimes I use seemingly pristine single-use industrial plastics. Fastidiously made like jewellery, I seek to draw attention to the serious global issue of plastic waste that our species generates daily. 08.01.2022 Deakin Art Collection in focus. Today we look at a work called Arcade Plaza Wall 2019 by Elyss McCleary, purchased for the Deakin University Art Collection last year. As explained by our Curator James Lynch, Elyss McCleary is an emerging artist based in Melbourne known for her abstract paintings, which are based on drawn observations of spaces and objects. He goes on to explain, Arcade Plaza Wall 2019 was first exhibited with a suite of paintings as part of a pop up exhibit...ion installed in an abandoned warehouse in inner Melbourne. In this context, the scumbled mark making and dry painted surfaces of McCleary’s painting integrated seamlessly with the deteriorating interiors of the building. McCleary paints in a lyrical manner with the periphery of the canvas in mind, feeling around the surroundings, in-front and behind to locate her compositions. She orchestrates her gestural physical activities as moving meditations that are simultaneously fast, slow, soft, hard and unyielding. Fleeting feelings are captured and memorialized and the resultant effects create a curious circularity where one can no longer clearly demarcate where gestures and archetypal forms start and end, overlap and merge. 05.01.2022 Deakin Art Collection in focus. Today we look at an iconic photographic artwork by Laurie Wilson from 1974 called Dog Rocks. As explained by our Curator, James Lynch, artist and photographer Laurie Wilson grew up in Geelong West. He left school at a young age and worked as a farm hand before becoming an assistant at the John Lockwood photographic studios in Ryrie Street Geelong. Wilson then worked as a projectionist at the Corio cinema where he met his wife Gwen Lorna Thoma...s. Together they opened a commercial photography studio in Moorabool Street (1945) taking portraits and documenting weddings and debutante balls. After a serious illness they were forced to close the studio in 1965 and upon retirement Wilson focused on his artistic ambitions. Over the next decade Wilson documented the surrounding landscapes of Geelong that he knew and loved. The Dog Rocks series of silver gelatin photographic prints were taken around Fyansford and captured the fleeting sense of time passing against the ancient natural order of the world. It has been said that Wilson lived with serious illness throughout the 70s and knew of his own mortality. In these images he presents the power of the landscape with a heightened drama and foreboding, and with a palpable sense of emotional crisis. One of these images was the only Australian photograph selected in 1975 for the international exhibition The Land, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. In 1979, Deakin University purchased an entire series of the prints and after Wilson’s death in 1980, the NGV published a small catalogue on his works by the then Curator of Photography Jennie Boddington. Works from the Dog Rocks series were acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Biblioteque National, Paris, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. 04.01.2022 Deakin Art Collection in focus. Today we look at a stunning sculpture by Adrian Mauriks. Adrian Mauriks was a well-known sculptor based in Victoria, who had a long affiliation with Deakin University. Former Acting Manager Victor Griss curated an exhibition of his works in 2007 called ‘Installations, Images in the Mirror’, at the ICON Museum of Art (now Deakin University Art Gallery). Mauriks was also a finalist in the 2009 ‘Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Awa...rd’. The sculpture ‘Strange Fruit’ gifted to Deakin University earlier this year and it was recently installed at the Melbourne Burwood Campus. Created in 2010, it was exhibited in the same year at the ‘McClelland Sculpture Survey and Award’, Langwarrin, Victoria. When describing the work, Mauriks said, A chapter in the history of the world. Genetically altered forms that resemble living organisms. The forms are part of an intimate landscape experience. An inspired desire to capture something of a living presence. Mauriks’ early works were darker, welded steel pieces, but over time his work gradually evolved into the organic, glistening forms that he is recognised for today. His shiny white installations became well-known features at the Docklands precinct, Melbourne and on the highway to Geelong. Some of his last works were steel constructs painted stunning ultra-saturate blue. Deakin is privileged to have examples of these works as well as other earlier pieces in the collection. Adrian Mauriks sadly passed away earlier this year, he was a talented sculptor who will be deeply missed. His legacy will live on in his beautiful works and we thank him and his family, for the generous gifts he made to the Deakin University Art Collection. We are privileged to be able to display his works at Deakin and are excited to share some images of ‘Strange Fruit’ with you today. 02.01.2022 We recently heard the sad news that artist Max Dimmack has passed away. Max was known as a progressive educator, artist and author. He held positions such as Head of Visual Arts at Coburg State Teachers College, and he was one of the foundation lecturers at Burwood Teachers College, an antecedent institution of Deakin University. Max was born in Adelaide in 1922 and upon relocating to Melbourne completed his secondary education at Northcote High School. Max served in World Wa...r II in the Signals Corps and saw heavy fighting in Borneo. His experience of war had a profound affect upon his life and on his return from war studied painting at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne under Alan Warren, graduating in 1949. As well as becoming a gifted modern artist, Max was an influential educator and he advocated for advancing visual arts in the Victorian school curriculum. Whilst a lecturer in art at the Burwood Teachers College, Max designed illustrations for the official college emblem used on the college badge and the foundation year uniform. He also, importantly, helped to establish the art collection. He wrote several books including volumes on the work of artists Noel Counihan and Clifford Last. Max’s painting Dark Conifers, 2013 was donated by the 1954 Foundation Year Students to the Deakin University Art Collection in 2014 in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the foundation of the Burwood Teachers College. From the Teachers College emblem is the Latin motto: Animum Cultum Parabo - I shall lay the foundation of a well-trained mind. Vale Max Dimmack, thank you for your legacy. 02.01.2022 Deakin Art Collection in focus. Today we look at a neon work by Jon Campbell on display at Deakin University Burwood Library. Born in Northern Ireland in 1961 and arriving in Australia three years later, Jon Campbell is considered to be one of Australia’s foremost artists. His works have been described as a fusion between rock and roll and impressions of working class Australian suburbia. Taking inspiration from the everyday world, Campbell delights in highlighting the often... contradictory and subjective nature of language. Jon Campbell began exhibiting neon works in 2002 focusing on the phonetic nature and often incorrect usage of words in the Australian vernacular. Throughout this period, Campbell was experimenting with several forms of media such as laser cut acrylic and vinyl banners aiming to turn text into the physical, and with his neon works, into a sculptural form. The neon work ‘just sing what you feel’ (2013) was part of an exhibition of the same name shown as part of the public programs at the NGV and was then included in an exhibition at the former ‘Kalimanrawlins Gallery’ in South Yarra. The artwork is pictured in situ on the third floor of the Deakin University Library at the Melbourne Burwood Campus. It has become a much-loved feature of the library space. 01.01.2022 It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of artist John Nixon. Our team had the privilege of working closely with John recently on the exhibition ‘Studio Pottery from the John Nixon Collection’ which was curated by James Lynch in collaboration with John, and shown at the Deakin University Art Gallery at the Burwood campus in 2018. The exhibition went on to have a second life as part of ‘Collector/Collected’ in 2019 at SAM. It celebrated John’s comprehens...ive collection of early Australian studio pottery that he had spent over 15 years accumulating. John had a long association with Deakin and presented the solo exhibition ‘Tableaux’ at University Gallery in 1991. One of Australia’s most high-profile artists leading debates around abstraction, modernism and the local context, he will be deeply missed. We pass on our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues and take a moment to honour the contribution of this talented, extraordinary and generous man.
