11.01.2022 The owner of Nedlands’ iconic Windsor Theatre is free to demolish it if he chooses, after an about-face by the WA Heritage Council.... The decision was welcomed enthusiastically by building owner Roger Hunt, but blasted by the shocked group that applied for heritage protection. This matter is far from over, said Vyonne Geneve, president of the Art Deco and Modernist Society of WA. The duty of the Heritage Council was to make a fearless decision to protect a heritage landmark in the face of development pressures. It failed to do so. I was advised by the Heritage Council on June 25 that the Windsor Theatre has cultural heritage signifi cance and that ‘the place makes an important contribution to understanding the heritage of Western Australia’. But after the Heritage Council met recently to consider submissions, on Tuesday Ms Geneve received the opposite advice. A letter signed by Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt, who is a member of the Heritage Council, said: The Heritage Council resolved at its meeting on September 25 that the Windsor Theatre does not have signifi cant cultural heritage signifi cance at the State level for inclusion in the State Register of Heritage Places. Mr Pettitt is currently campaigning against the destruction of the Fremantle traffi c bridge, which is not as old as the Windsor, signifi cantly on heritage grounds.
