19.01.2022 For those dealing with health challenges that may be related to environment, reconsider carpet. Due to the tiny twisted fibers that make up carpet l, along wi...th a woven backing, carpet stores dust and dirt. Carpet cannot be cleaned adequately EVER! Over time it accumulates dust in all those fibers. Dust is organic matter that can be toxic in and of itself. But dust is also a food source for mold to live off, sometimes just with high humidity. For full recovery an environment that is as clean and dust free as possible is necessary. Treat mold sensitivities like dust allergies to recover health. It may be possible for some people to do well on newer carpet but that will vary by individual. Really new carpet can off-gas very toxic chemicals so there are more hazards to consider than just mold! If carpet is desired for comfort , get removable area rugs that can be shaken outside. Anyone who has ever shaken a carpet outside has seen the collected debris that comes out. Any cleanable hard surface is preferable to carpet. This includes tile, wood, vinyl, laminate and even wood or concrete subfloor itself. Some materials will not be suitable over concrete however.
