Being vision-impaired all my life, I have learnt that I am a person first and foremost. My low vision is only a part of who I am. It is extremely important that I be vigilant and not complacent about my surroundings. Such qualities should be important to each and every person. I was gifted with an artistic streak from my mother ...and grandma. While attending primary school, I loved working with clay and making pottery. Alterations is an exhibition showcasing the creative works of a selection of Queensland artists from who are blind or partially sighted.... Curated by disability arts researcher, writer and emerging curator, Donna McDonald, the exhibition reveals how vision impaired artists adapt and alter artistic creative processes to make art in response to their world. It also seeks to inform others about the creative alterations and adaptations that people with vision impairments make in their everyday lives. Alterations includes artworks from AFTM Studio artists, Brisbane and regional Queensland artists who work across a range of media such as painting, photography, printmaking and ceramics. I decided to find my sense of art when I was a little girl to overcome all differences and challenges with bullies at school and knowing I was different in the family. Dr Carol McGregor is of Wathaurung (Kulin Nation, Victoria) and Scottish descent a multimedia disciplinarian working with ephemeral natural fibres, metal, and paper. Through her artistic practice, McGregor explores this rich cu...ltural identity of diverse ancestry and lived experience. As an artist, McGregor seeks to adapt and embrace new technologies to reclaim and connect to cultural expression, whilst exposing hidden histories within the landscape. In 2019 she graduated with a Doctorate in Visual Arts at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, investigating the material culture of possum skin cloaks in South East Queensland (SEQ). 01.01.2022 [Sylvain Minier] In 2010 I entered a competition with the AFTM Queensland and submitted an image of the EKKA called Kamikaze. The composition covered at least seven rides. I received a highly commended award and it was my first ever award for photography. Now I try to go every year to take memories of all the wonderful things the Ekka has on offer. 01.01.2022 Big appreciation post for our amazing Gallery Assistant and Foto Group organiser/extraordinaire, Jake! In his six months at Art from the Margins, Jake was always a familiar and friendly face, and were all going to miss seeing him around the Gallery! Jake came to us through the ORCA Project, which provides post-school options for young people with different abilities that includes training, work experience and ultimately employment. The ORCA Project is an invaluable part of the Art from the Margins community. He may have moved on to bigger and better things, but we are still exhibiting some of Jakes photographic works as part of our Showtime exhibition, which runs until Friday, September 18 at the Art from the Margins gallery on 136 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley.
